I've wanted to read House on Mango Street forever, but never enough to select it over other options. I ought to get over my inertia, check it out and read it in Q1.

I am reading The Hunting Gun by Yasushi Inoue. It has nothing to do with hunting or guns, and is an epistolary book about an affair.

Carmaleeta Newchurch Well, I didn't reach my goal of 35 books to read. By the end of this day I would have read 30 books - 80%. Not bad. I could have completed the goal but I discovered that I was reading for the sake of completeness and not for fun or even understanding. Happy New Year everyone and good reading.

message 1053: by Suzette (new)

Suzette Harrison I'm reading "A Mercy" by Toni Morrison.

Brina I finished I Never Had it Made- Jackie Robinson's autobiography. And started The Warmth of Other Suns. Loving it so far. I love how in the introduction Wilkerson compares the great migration to Jewish immigration from Eastern Europe. Making it more meaningful for me.

message 1058: by Carol (new)

Carol (carolfromnc) | 4597 comments I finished Season of Migration to the North by Tayeb Salih, and am kicking myself that I didn't read it years ago. This evening, I will start I'll Be Right There by Kyung-Sook Shin.

message 1059: by Brina (new)

Brina Carol, my mother told me to read Kyung Sook Shin so I curious about your review. Michelle- I am on the waiting list for Do Not Say We Have Nothing so I'm awaiting that review too :)

Funny, I've been hearing great things for at least the last year about it, and kept selecting other works instead. I'm committed this time :)

I actually got it from the library, and didn't get the chance to read it before it was due back. I may try again this year. I hope you enjoy Mama Day.

The book starts ratcheting up in the second half and becoming increasingly powerful, I think.

J. Schlenker | 10 comments I just finished Mudbound. I was recently at the Underground Railway Museum and the lady in the bookstore recommended it to me. I'm glad she did. It's a book that will definitely stick with me.

And, the bookclub I meet with just discussed To Kill a Mockingbird. I didn't re-read it because I had so many other things going on. But, a lot came back to me, and it was an excellent discussion.
