C.P. Patrick (christineaplatt) | 44 comments Hi everyone. The hardest part about being an author is finding time to read! However, I recently saw the cover for Mecca Sullivan's book, "Blue Talk & Love" and I had to grab it. I also found the description fascinating - Blue Talk and Love tells the stories of girls and women of color navigating the moods and mazes of urban daily life. Set in various enclaves of New York City — including the middle-class Hamilton Heights section of Harlem, the black queer social world of the West Village, the Spanish-speaking borderland between Harlem and Washington Heights, and historic Tin Pan Alley — the collection uses magic realism, historical fiction, satire and more to highlight young black women's inner lives. It arrived today so I'll start reading it tonight. :-)

Thomas Rush | 5 comments I am currently reading a biography of Marcus Garvey "Negro With A Hat" by Colin Grant and a History of The Civil War called "Battle Cry Of Freedom" by James McPherson. This is part of a personal project, reading books about Malcolm X and contrasting them with books about Abraham Lincoln. I chose these 2 because they are two respected intellects from totally different backgrounds and perspectives, but both are obviously brilliant men. Malcolm's father, Earl Little and also Elijah Muhammad were said to have been in The Garvey Movement led by Marcus Garvey, a Black Nationalistic grass-roots movement popular in the 1920's, so I felt the book would be helpful background info on Malcolm. The Civil War book helps to give background info on Lincoln.

I read both of these books quite a few years ago now and would n t mind rereading Battle Cry Of Freedom" by James McPherson, which I found very informative.

Thomas, two books you may want to read in tandem are Debt: The First 5,000 Years and Year 501: The Conquest Continues. Debt is a fascinating look at the role debt has had in enslaving people across the ages, with a particular focus on the place money has had to help create and extend war-based enslavement societies. Fascinating read. And Year 501 is a look at 500 years of capitalism/colonialism as a tool to create and justify poverty and death. The title refers to the year after the 500th anniversary of Columbus's 'discovery' of North America.

Quoleena Sbrocca (qjsbrocca) I'm about to venture into the world of Octavia Butler. The book I've heard most about is Kindred. Has anyone read this or any other books of hers? Which would you recommend that I start with? I want to start in August.

Hi Quoleena,

I think Kindred is good start and one of her most well known novels. But my personal favorite is Wild Seed and Parable of the Sower is another good read.

message 492: by C.P. (new)

C.P. Patrick (christineaplatt) | 44 comments I love Parable of the Sower. And so very timely in this day and age. Love some Octavia Butler!

message 493: by Shomeret (new)

Shomeret | 70 comments I also love Wild Seedmore than any other Octavia Butler books. I liked the fact that it begins in Africa. Her last novel Fledgling is a very unexpected vampire novel. Not only is it a new approach to vampires, but she addresses race in a very interesting and compelling way.

I'm currently reading Jam on the Vineby LaShonda Katrice Barnett which begins in 1897 in Texas. The protagonist, Ivoe Williams, is an African American child who steals newspapers because her family can't afford them. She is determined to become a journalist when she grows up. The novel is about how she succeeds in achieving her ambition.

I really enjoyed Jam on the Vine. On of my fav reads of the year.

message 497: by Beverly (new)

Beverly I have enjoyed all of Octavia Butler's work.

I stared with Wild Seed. And would recommend you start there if you are a scifi fan.

If not I would suggest you start with Kindred (another one of my favs) as it is the most accessible of her work to readers who want to ease into scifi.

But whatever you start with you will too will become a fan.

message 498: by Quoleena (new)

Quoleena Sbrocca (qjsbrocca) Thanks Andrew, Shomeret, and Beverly! I'd already placed her Xeogenesis series on my tbr, but I think I'll start with your recommendations first, specifically, Wild Seed. Very much looking forward to it!
