I recently attended the book launch event of a survivor,[author:Margot Friedlander|4576225] . Powerful stuff. I plan to finish Elie Wiesel's trilogy this year. I'll be in Amsterdam later this year so I'll try to read Ann Frank's book before I go.

Hi Kisha, I'm liking it immensely. Just based on what I've read to far it would be one of my recommendations.

Yes Beverly, as I said to someone earlier today, I now understand why Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has been recognised as such an acclaimed writer. I already have "Purple Hibiscus" on my bookshelf and I am looking forward to reading it.

But at times it seems like all of my holds come available at the same time so here are the books that I picked on Sat. I definitely will be getting my read on over the next month.
Song of the Shank by Jeffery Renard Allen - AAHF
Time of the Locust by Morowa Yejide - debut novel by AA writer
Saint Monkey by Jacinda Townsend - AAHF - debut book
Your Fathers, Where Are They? And the Prophets, Do They Live Forever? by Dave Eggers - I have liked his previous books that I have read - always takes on a current issue.
You Should Have Known by Jean Hanff Korelitz
The Girls at the Kingfisher Club by Genevieve Valentine - HF
On Such a Full Sea by Chang-rae Lee- speculative fiction set in the near future
All Our Names by Dinaw Mengestu
I'll Be Right There by Shin Kyung-sook- enjoy her writing style

New Wave of African Writers With an Internationalist Bent

Yes, I have Americanah on my list as well. I haven't read it yet but my tbr list is overwhelmingly long. I may push it up on my list though. I have heard so many good things about it.

Thanks for sharing this article.
I have read the authors mentioned in the article and they have all contributed to adding to my knowledge of the African Diaspora. And I hope to see many more books by more authors of the African Diaspora.
Do not necessarily agree with the statement of the rep from the publishing industry - that they are not overlooking Black American writers.
To that is why it is very important to read newly published books by Black Americans. It is great to read the "classics" as that is certainly important. But I do try to read a fair amount of newly published books by Black American authors.
I know books are so expensive these days which is why I love my public library! I will quickly add a book by a debut Black author to my hold list - especially if it is in a genre that I love - literary fiction, historical fiction, scifi, mysteries. I think it is important to show both libraries and publishers we want to continue for them to publish (and for libraries to purchase) by Black American authors.

I am currently reading Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison. I started off reading a sample to see if it qualified for a group read but I couldn't put it down!

I really, really want to read this book. This has been on my to read list for two years now. I think I am going to read it next.

An Untamed State
Euphoria
Time of the Locust
Saint Monkey
Hurricane Fever
Angels Make Their Hope Here
The Year She Left Us: A Novel

I read The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd and I couldn't really get into all though I loved the movie and the plotline. Maybe I'll give the Invention of Wings a Try.

Euphoria by Lily King
An African in Greenland by Tété-Michel Kpomassie.
I think I must have been a cultural anthropologist in a prior life - so enjoy learning about other cultures and doing some armchair traveling.
I am listening to:
The Book of Life by Deborah Harkness.

I have not read the Euphoria reviews too closely as I knew I was going to read the book. But it seems this is a book you either like or do not like. The last book I read that had divided reviews like this was Boy, Snow, Bird and with that book I was on the did not like side. With Euphoria I am on the like side.
Book of Life is the third book in a trilogy. I have read the other two books and really enjoyed. So I was one of the fans waiting for this release. Really enjoy the characters and like the blending of history, time travel, science, and the juggling of power between the fractions of vampires, witches and demons.

Time of the Locust by Morowa Yejide
I am only p. 61 and I do not want to put it down.
Dark, compelling, & thought-provoking

The Summer of Dead Toys by Antonio Hill
Very good storytelling, keeping me in suspense yet providing the clues so I can also start to unravel the storyline.

The Pearl that Broke Its Shell by Nadia Hashimi.
This is my audio read. Enjoying the cultural aspects.

Eye of the Beholder by Elissa Gabrielle

Mr Loverman by Bernardine Evaristo
I have read this author before and enjoy her witty engaging writing style.

Belle City by Penny Mickelbury
Glad to see a new release from an author I enjoyed in the past and it is a historical saga on of my fav genres.

The Laced Chameleon by Bob Rogers
HF set in New Orleans
