Bkwmlee | 27 comments Hi, I’m Lee! I’m in my 30s and originally from Hong Kong but grew up in the U.S. and currently live in sunny California. :-)

I used to be an avid reader but unfortunately haven’t been able to read as much as I used to due to work and life obligations, so for 2017, I decided my New Year’s resolution would be to “renew my passion for reading.” I joined a few book clubs on Goodreads to help me with this goal and so far, have been enjoying getting back into books and reading consistently again.

In terms of genres, I like to read across the board rather than limit myself to anything specific. The only 2 genres that I tend to stay away from are sci-fi and horror, since neither of those are my cup of tea….other than that, I read pretty much anything that sounds interesting to me. I’m also a huge fan of Classics, which is one of the reasons why I chose this group to join. There are some Classics I haven’t read yet and others that I read in my school days but don’t remember much anymore, so would like to re-read. My all-time favorite classic novel is Pride and Prejudice which I’ve re-read too many times to count (and intend to re-read again when I get the chance). Another all-time favorite of mine is Jane Eyre, which I've also re-read many times.

My reading schedule has been jam-packed the past few months, but hopefully I’ll still be able to participate in some of the group readings/discussions.

Pink | 5491 comments Welcome to the group Lee, I'm glad you've joined us for some classic reading. I'm glad to hear you loved Pride and Prejudice and Jane Eyre, you'll find a lot of Austen and Bronte fans here. We're currently group reading a couple of their other books, Emma and Villette, so you might want to join us for those discussions if you have time.

MKay | 277 comments Welcome, Lee! Jane Eyre is my favorite, too. I must admit I have yet to read Pride and Prejudice, but I do own a copy. Just have to find the time to squeeze it in.

Hilde (hilded) | 56 comments Hello everyone, I am Hilde from Norway.
I recently joined your group, and from what I have seen so far it seems like a really friendly group. I am in my thirties, and have over the past two years gotten my reading mojo back, after years of not that much reading due to studies and life coming in the way. Happy to join you!:)

I don't really have a favourite genre, I like almost anything as long as the book is well written and without to many clichees. Recently, I have found out that I need to read more of the classics, hence this group will be perfect for that! But, some of them can be quite challenging, so I will mix it up with other reads as well.

I will browse through the different challenges that you have, and try to familiarise myself, looking forward to exploring new authors as we go.

How nice for you to be a fan of Ovid and Homer. :)
Those oldest pieces of literature are some of the greatest. Unfortunately, my Greek isn't yet good enough to take it up with dear old Homer. ...

message 4472: by Nick (new)

Nick Ovid is wonderful! Even in English (I don't read Greek). Homer - difficult.

Welcome, Tricia! I avoided Moby Dick for decades and when I finally read it, I loved it. I had no idea there would be humor, poetry, Shakespearean monologues - a little of everything. I probably wouldn't have appreciated it when I was younger.

Yes!
Through the means of my studies I've learned a bit about the general structure of ancient oral poetry - which also still transpires in Homer. I'm especially in awe about the associative word system those poets used to play on.
So I'm very eager to view that masterpiece in its full grandeur. :)
I'm also hoping I can do a seminar on Homer - in a year maybe ... *pining*

Gill | 29 comments I've rejoined!

I left because I didn't feel I had enough time to join in the reads that I wanted to. I'm not sure how much more time I have now - we'll see!

The House of Mirth is a favourite of mine, so I'm looking forward to re-reading and discussing this in June.

message 4490: by Adrienne (new)

Adrienne Bradshaw Hi, y'all! I'm Adrienne! Southern Louisiana gal, married for little over a year, and I work part time as a barista and cake decorator. I have two kitten fur children (Sherlock and Kaiba) and I love to cook, color, and take naps! I have a bachelor's in English literature and language and I've been out of whack as of late and haven't been reading hardly anything other than text messages on my phone...Trying to reignite the interest in diving into a book and not coming up for air until I'm finished. I love British literature, the romantic period, and my all time favorite book is Jane Eyre. I'm hoping to go back for my master's degree soon and I love the idea of community and sharing what we get from stories! can't wait to read, learn, and share with y'all! Happy reading!

message 4491: by Brina (new)

Brina Welcome Adrienne. This is a great group to be in to restart your reading. There are lots of choices each month so hopefully you will find some books that you like. Hope you enjoy it here.

message 4492: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Welcome to the group Adrienne and thanks for taking the time to introduce yourself. I hope we help you get back to reading more than text messages! I'm a Jane Eyre fan too, but recently I've been a biography about Charlotte and I'm hoping to finish her other novels this year. As Brina says, we have lots of choice here, so hopefully something appeals and reignites your interest in reading classics.

Lana | 7 comments Hi everyone! My name is Anna, I am from Russia but currently live in California (got tired of all the cold!) I'm 26 and recently married. I love animals with all my heart, enjoy studying foreign languages (apart from Russian and English, I speak Spanish and study Turkish) and of course, I love reading classics! Which is why I found and joined this wonderful group. I can't wait to discuss the books with fellow bookworms and see all the different points of view!

On the side note: I noticed that a lot of group members read enormous amount of book per year - could you please share the secret of such productivity? This is truly amazing!

message 4500: by Tonia (new)

Tonia (yestonia) | 177 comments Hi Anna. Welcome!

I was only reading a book or two per month until joining this group. Because there are many to read each month, I have increased my reading time no end. In fact, joining this group has meant I am using my free time more productively as my social media time has been reallocated to reading. I personally tend to have different books on the go at one time, partly because some I am reading through different means. I much prefer actual books, but download a lot (especially classics) through Project Gutenburg so read those on my laptop and have a few on my kindle app to read when I am out and about and haven't thought to bring a book.

Also, I use Calibre on my laptop which allows me to sort books by their length - as I have to read a few to catch up with the group shelf, I am working through them all from the shortest to the longest (something i may regret later, but right now it's working well for me!)
