Cheryl, I can relate. Ironically I was in grad school for French and English literature, and it almost ruined my love of reading! Thankfully it returned stronger than ever.

Camille Hi everyone!

My name is Camille, I'm from Paris and I used to read nothing but classics until I got tired of them a couple of years ago. I have recently been experiencing the longest reading slump and I am hoping that going back to classics will get me back in the saddle!

I love Albert Cohen, Tolstoï, Milan Kundera, Victor Hugo, reading about the Middle Ages, victorian England, imperial Russia and ancient civilisations.

I look forward to discovering now stories with you all (and improve my English along the way) !

message 4258: by Brina (new)

Brina Welcome, Camille. Your English sounds good and there are members here from all over the world. You seem to like a lot of classics already so you have come to the right place. Hope you enjoy this group.

Eloise McCrohan | 2 comments Hiya, I'm Eloïse. Born in France with irish and english parents. You can imagine how heated our dinner with friends gets. :) When it comes to classics, I either absolutely adore them, or do not get them at all. There really is no in between. So I'm looking for more books to hate or love. I pick from any genre really, I'm just looking for something that can make me curious, on any topic whatsoever. glad to be a part of this group :)

Lars Martin (lmborlaug) | 23 comments Salut, Camille.

I actually lived in Paris a lifetime ago. At Châtelet to be exact. A beautiful place with a distinct character.

Bienvenue Eloise.

I'm sorry to say that I've only been to Ireland once. I spent a long weekend in Dublin. Treading the steps of James Joyce (never got through Ulysses though). Loved the city and the people so much that I've gotten myself a dream: Cycle through Ireland. I just got to find myself someone to drive the car with the provisions and clothes.

message 4267: by Mick (new)

Mick Kelly Hi everyone,

I'm new to this group but have read quite a lot of classics - especially when I was younger (I had a great fondness for Jules Verne, R.L. Stevenson etc).

I'm currently researching late 19C Liverpool for an upcoming project of mine and I know that there were religious riots in the city (between protestants and catholics). Has anyone come across a 19C novel that deals with religion and conflict? I only really know about the Barchester Chronicles and they are more about church politics - I'm looking for something that involves ordinary people.

message 4268: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Welcome to the group Cheryl, Camille, Eloïse and Mick!

Mick, I think many Victorian novelists touched on religion, with an anti-catholic viewpoint. Though I can't think of anything that deals specifically with religious conflicts. I believe that our upcoming group read of Villette mentions protestants and catholics, but I haven't read it yet, so I don't know how much religion is involved in the novel.

Hello, this is Noriko from Japan. I didn't use to be a Classic type of reader, but I recently finished Crime and Punishment and was completely sold on the lure of Classic literature.
I'm currently tackling Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights and really liking it so far!

As a non-native, I'm kind of slow at reading Classics, it's always been a challenge for me, but I'd like to participate in the group activities as much as I possibly can!

message 4276: by Lars Martin (new)

Lars Martin (lmborlaug) | 23 comments Hi Noriko.
Welcome.
I read C&P a couple of years ago. I loved it as well.
I found it surprisingly optimistic. At least that was how I interpreted it - or misinterpreted it, if you will :)

message 4277: by Brina (new)

Brina Welcome, Noriko. Your English sounds good, and you are off to a great start reading Crime and Punishment and Wuthering Heights. I hope you enjoy reading the classics in this group.

Hi and welcome Noriko! Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë is my favorite book in the whole wide world! I'm so glad that you're enjoying it! Everyone here reads at their own pace so don't worry about how long it takes to read a classic! Some classics are long and take time to read! Just jump in wherever you feel comfortable but just remember to enjoy yourself and happy reading! :)

Kristin Selnes | 31 comments Hi Noriko. I am Norwegian and try to read some of the classics in English. I am impressed by your two choices. I don't think I would consider reading C&P in English. Wuthering Heights though...
However, I have found Thomas Hardy quite easy to read in English.

Noriko, you've inspired me to try out "Crime and Punishment," a book I never thought I'd want to read! But I recently finished "War and Peace." So after Tolstoy, I think I should give Dostoyevsky a try!
Enjoy this group and reading more classics! :)

message 4284: by [deleted user] (new)

Thank you so much everyone, for welcoming me so warmly! I'm really glad that I worked up the courage to join the group.
I read "Crime and Punishment" just because my American friend suggested that I should definitely give it a try. Frankly, I didn't get to fully wrap my head around its philosophical ideas or dialogues, but I quite enjoyed the story itself - the last 60 to 70 pages, how the story wrapped up was quite impressive.

"War and Peace" is actually on my TBR list. I will give it a try, thank you!

Hi and welcome, Noriko :) I'm a non-native reader of English classics as well.

Sometimes the cause of my slow reading speed is not difficulty of classic books. It's that I enjoy the writing a lot, I go through the pleasure of reading the book slowly and comfortably. This happened with Jane Austen books and Thomas Hardy's Jude The Obscure for instance.

It's a great pleasure for readers to read a good book with their own comfortable pace and you are welcome to join us in reading classics with your own pace :) Happy reading!

Carlo | 167 comments Hello there. I'm Carlo, a new member of the group currently living in Switzerland. I started reading classics again a few years ago during a short spell of travelling. I enjoy the variety of writing styles from different eras and countries as well as the diverse range of subjects on offer.

Most rewarding for me are thought provoking books which offer an insight into human nature, but I also just like to read fun and interesting stories.

Nadia | 1 comments Hello everyone! My name is Nadia, I was born in Russia, but I currently live in France. I’ve always enjoyed reading but there were times when I read little. Today I can’t live without books, probably like most of the members of this group. I read a lot and really love it, I am very happy to discover new authors, new characters, and new stories. But I lack the opportunity to share my thoughts with others, friends or family not always being able to fully reflect with me on different ideas, because we rarely read the same book at the same time. That is why I am very glad to have found this group. I hope that my English will be good enough to let me participate in the activities of the group. And I am very excited to start reading this April selection! I wish to everyone a good reading!
