Hi and welcome Cheryl. Glad you've decided to join our group to further your journey of reading classics! Enjoy and happy reading! :)

Cheryl, I can relate. Ironically I was in grad school for French and English literature, and it almost ruined my love of reading! Thankfully it returned stronger than ever.

My name is Camille, I'm from Paris and I used to read nothing but classics until I got tired of them a couple of years ago. I have recently been experiencing the longest reading slump and I am hoping that going back to classics will get me back in the saddle!
I love Albert Cohen, Tolstoï, Milan Kundera, Victor Hugo, reading about the Middle Ages, victorian England, imperial Russia and ancient civilisations.
I look forward to discovering now stories with you all (and improve my English along the way) !

Hi and welcome Camille (beautiful name, it's also my sister's!). Glad you're here for your continued enjoyment of reading the classics! Enjoy and happy reading! :)

Hi and welcome Eloise! That's the way with books, isn't it? You either love them or hate them! Our group definitely reads more on the love side so enjoy and happy reading! :)

thank you very much :)

Thank you for your nice welcome!

I actually lived in Paris a lifetime ago. At Châtelet to be exact. A beautiful place with a distinct character.
Bienvenue Eloise.
I'm sorry to say that I've only been to Ireland once. I spent a long weekend in Dublin. Treading the steps of James Joyce (never got through Ulysses though). Loved the city and the people so much that I've gotten myself a dream: Cycle through Ireland. I just got to find myself someone to drive the car with the provisions and clothes.

I'm new to this group but have read quite a lot of classics - especially when I was younger (I had a great fondness for Jules Verne, R.L. Stevenson etc).
I'm currently researching late 19C Liverpool for an upcoming project of mine and I know that there were religious riots in the city (between protestants and catholics). Has anyone come across a 19C novel that deals with religion and conflict? I only really know about the Barchester Chronicles and they are more about church politics - I'm looking for something that involves ordinary people.

Mick, I think many Victorian novelists touched on religion, with an anti-catholic viewpoint. Though I can't think of anything that deals specifically with religious conflicts. I believe that our upcoming group read of Villette mentions protestants and catholics, but I haven't read it yet, so I don't know how much religion is involved in the novel.

Hi and welcome Mick! Your research sounds fascinating and I'll be very interested to see what our members recommend to you. In the meantime, enjoy and happy reading! :)

As much as I'm enjoying my degree, it's easy for my leisure reading to be overshadowed..."
Hi and welcome Poppy! There's no "required" reading list in our group, only monthly reads that you pick to read! You can read them all or pick what works best for you and then join in the discussions with members. I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time here, so happy reading! :)
Hello, this is Noriko from Japan. I didn't use to be a Classic type of reader, but I recently finished Crime and Punishment and was completely sold on the lure of Classic literature.
I'm currently tackling Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights and really liking it so far!
As a non-native, I'm kind of slow at reading Classics, it's always been a challenge for me, but I'd like to participate in the group activities as much as I possibly can!

Welcome.
I read C&P a couple of years ago. I loved it as well.
I found it surprisingly optimistic. At least that was how I interpreted it - or misinterpreted it, if you will :)

Thank you, everyone! I'll definitely try to participate in the group activities, I'm so excited!!

Hi and welcome Noriko! Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë is my favorite book in the whole wide world! I'm so glad that you're enjoying it! Everyone here reads at their own pace so don't worry about how long it takes to read a classic! Some classics are long and take time to read! Just jump in wherever you feel comfortable but just remember to enjoy yourself and happy reading! :)

However, I have found Thomas Hardy quite easy to read in English.
Welcome to the group Noriko. We are happy you have joined us and read at any pace that works for you.

Noriko, you've inspired me to try out "Crime and Punishment," a book I never thought I'd want to read! But I recently finished "War and Peace." So after Tolstoy, I think I should give Dostoyevsky a try!
Enjoy this group and reading more classics! :)
Thank you so much everyone, for welcoming me so warmly! I'm really glad that I worked up the courage to join the group.
I read "Crime and Punishment" just because my American friend suggested that I should definitely give it a try. Frankly, I didn't get to fully wrap my head around its philosophical ideas or dialogues, but I quite enjoyed the story itself - the last 60 to 70 pages, how the story wrapped up was quite impressive.
"War and Peace" is actually on my TBR list. I will give it a try, thank you!

Hi and welcome, Noriko :) I'm a non-native reader of English classics as well.
Sometimes the cause of my slow reading speed is not difficulty of classic books. It's that I enjoy the writing a lot, I go through the pleasure of reading the book slowly and comfortably. This happened with Jane Austen books and Thomas Hardy's Jude The Obscure for instance.
It's a great pleasure for readers to read a good book with their own comfortable pace and you are welcome to join us in reading classics with your own pace :) Happy reading!

Well said Lee and so, so true! :)

Most rewarding for me are thought provoking books which offer an insight into human nature, but I also just like to read fun and interesting stories.

Hello and welcome Carlo! You'll enjoy your continued reading of classics here Carlo! We read an array of books each month, something for everyone, so jump in, enjoy and happy reading! :)
Welcome to the group Carlo. And I love your statement, "Most rewarding for me are thought provoking books which offer an insight into human nature, but I also just like to read fun and interesting stories." I so agree! I think you will fit perfectly into the group. Happy Reading.

I'm currently reading Wuthering height.
I'm not good at English
I read English version book to improve my skill.
Welcome Wulan! I am glad that you have joined us, and it is just fine that English is not your first language. I love your attitude and your goal of improvement -- your English is good enough to understand easily. Welcome.

Hi and welcome Sam! I have not read a lot of Kurt Vonnegut. I did read Slaughterhouse-Five which I did enjoy though. I think you'll enjoy yourself here so happy reading! :)
