Hey Andy, welcome! Happy reading! :)

Hi Barry. So glad to have another avid reader in the group. And lifetime book collector sounds so much better than book hoarder that my husband calls me. Welcome to the group.

This is actually the first Goodreads group I've ever joined, so I'm hoping I can talk about books on here! Previous to this, I've posted a (little) bit on the Literature Network forums, but they're almost deserted. Seems to be tons of more people on here. My only fear is that I won't be able to keep up with the amount of posting on here, as there seems to be TONS of members. Is this the best "classics" (it's all just literature to me) group on Goodreads?
I was a literature major in college and LOVED reading growing up, but it was mostly modern stuff and nonfiction. I didn't really get into reading and exploring the history of literature itself until after college. I was actually trying to get over a drug addiction and came into contact with Beowulf on the Beach, which I would recommend to anyone trying to embark on a journey into the literary canon. It's a very funny, useful, and witty guide. Kind of like Harold Bloom without the taking-himself-too-seriously vibe (not to say I don't read Bloom, too!).
So I've really only been reading "classics" for a few years now post-college. I've gotten through the King James Old Testament, the Iliad and the Odyssey (Lattimore translations), and just recently Moby-Dick. I saw a big thread on Moby-Dick, so I can't wait to jump into that. I filled up almost a full notebook's worth of notes on it, so I have so much to discuss.
Books I'd like to read this next year or two: basically all of Shakespeare, the Aeneid, the Divine Comedy, the Greek plays, and maybe some Milton. Maybe read some basic philosophy (Plato, etc.) and non-narrative poetry (not my strong suit).

Hi and welcome Edward and yes, I can say that this is the best classical group on Goodreads!! Having said that I'm sure you'll love the books that we read and the discussions we have too! There's something for everyone! So jump in anywhere, enjoy and happy reading! :)

Indeed! :)
Welcome to the group Edward and yes we do think that we are the best and most active Classics Literature group here on Goodreads. Others might question that, but I do hope you give us a try and don't worry about keeping up with all of the posts. Choose a book to read with us and join in that discussion. We have several new reads starting February 1st -- hope to see you there.

Hi and welcome Michelle! Our group will definitely help you to keep reading the classics! We have great book selections each month with discussions with members! So jump in, enjoy and happy reading! :)
Welcome Michelle -- I do hope we can help you keep reading classics. It's the first of the month so do join us in our new book discussions.

Thank you Brina. Hopefully I will be able to find the same balance between the two too.

Thank you for the welcome!
