Hilary (agapoyesoun) | 176 comments So sorry, Theresa. That is a terribly traumatic time that you and your husband have had and are having. So glad to have you in this club. Even though I am not as active in it as I would wish, it is a great group with an excellent choice of books to read. I hope that you enjoy!

Alyssa (ahartwich_) | 1 comments Hey, everyone. I'm Alyssa and I just made a GoodReads account yesterday. I currently live in Nevada, but I'm a military brat so I have lived in a lot of places. I haven't read too many classics, but my favorites would be Great Expectations and To Kill a Mockingbird. I usually read contemporary, sci-fi,fantasy, and suspense. I want to get into classics so I hope this group inspires me and helps me find some really great books. It's so nice meeting you all!!

Barry Anderson | 2 comments Hello everyone! I'm Barry. I live in Memphis, Tennessee. I've been an avid reader since I was a child and still have so many classics sitting on my bookshelves from a lifetime of collecting. I look forward to reading a few of them with all of you, especially those filled with adventure, history, and humor.

Hi Barry. So glad to have another avid reader in the group. And lifetime book collector sounds so much better than book hoarder that my husband calls me. Welcome to the group.

message 4018: by Brina (new)

Brina Welcome, Barry. Glad you joined to bring your lifetime knowledge to the group. Looking forward to seeing you here.

message 4019: by Edward (new)

Edward Chamberlin (sophisticatedliterati) | 22 comments Hello, all! My name is Edward. I'm 29 and live in the DC area, but I'm probably moving (back) to LA soon.

This is actually the first Goodreads group I've ever joined, so I'm hoping I can talk about books on here! Previous to this, I've posted a (little) bit on the Literature Network forums, but they're almost deserted. Seems to be tons of more people on here. My only fear is that I won't be able to keep up with the amount of posting on here, as there seems to be TONS of members. Is this the best "classics" (it's all just literature to me) group on Goodreads?

I was a literature major in college and LOVED reading growing up, but it was mostly modern stuff and nonfiction. I didn't really get into reading and exploring the history of literature itself until after college. I was actually trying to get over a drug addiction and came into contact with Beowulf on the Beach, which I would recommend to anyone trying to embark on a journey into the literary canon. It's a very funny, useful, and witty guide. Kind of like Harold Bloom without the taking-himself-too-seriously vibe (not to say I don't read Bloom, too!).

So I've really only been reading "classics" for a few years now post-college. I've gotten through the King James Old Testament, the Iliad and the Odyssey (Lattimore translations), and just recently Moby-Dick. I saw a big thread on Moby-Dick, so I can't wait to jump into that. I filled up almost a full notebook's worth of notes on it, so I have so much to discuss.

Books I'd like to read this next year or two: basically all of Shakespeare, the Aeneid, the Divine Comedy, the Greek plays, and maybe some Milton. Maybe read some basic philosophy (Plato, etc.) and non-narrative poetry (not my strong suit).

Welcome to the group Edward and yes we do think that we are the best and most active Classics Literature group here on Goodreads. Others might question that, but I do hope you give us a try and don't worry about keeping up with all of the posts. Choose a book to read with us and join in that discussion. We have several new reads starting February 1st -- hope to see you there.

Brina Welcome, Edward. Good luck with all of your plans. They sound ambitious. I think this is the best group for classics in Goodreads. Since joining I have increased how much I have read and varied the genres that I choose. I hope that you enjoy the books in this group.

message 4028: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Wolbaum | 3 comments hello my name is Michelle. I love the classics and was looking for a group to help me keep reading the classics. Sometimes it is hard to read when your friends read more modern fiction and you are wanting a bit more to your reading. So I am looking forward to this group, and getting insights into the literature we read.

message 4029: by Brina (new)

Brina Welcome, Michelle. This is the best group to be in to balance classics and modern fiction. I have increased the variety of books I've read since joining and I hope you do too. Looking forward to seeing you in the group.
