Hi and welcome Malala! Enjoy and happy reading! :)

Hi, it's Susan currently living in England but originally from Hungary. I was a reader all my life and fell in love with the classics when I was ten and read a children's version of the Iliad. I'm only just discovering Goodreads but it looks like fun. Last year I stumbled into book blogging and it made me realise that in addition to reading books I really just do love discussing them with others and write about the thoughts they inspire. So here I am now... I've got too many favourite authors to list here, from ancient Greek authors through 19th century British authors to current Spanish and Latin-American authors. I read in English, Spanish and Hungarian and some day I hope to read in Italian and Greek too! I'm looking forward to being part of this group, sharing & discovering books!

the only Hungarian book I have on my TBR list is Banffy's They Were Counted - have you read that one?

I have to admit I haven't. It's well-spoken off but every time I stop to consider reading it, I'm put it off. It's difficult to explain but the blurb speaks to me about a Hungary that I cannot relate to: the upper-classes of Transylvania at the turn of 19th/20th century. I probably will read it one day, nevertheless, it's just I've got many other books to read first that I'm more interested in.
But if you are interested in Hungary, I can recommend a couple of other books too (although they might be difficult to find):
People of the Puszta by Gyula Illyés
This is a book that's part autobiography, part sociography. The author was almost a contemporary of my grandmother, from a village a few kilometres away from my grandmother's and from the same social background - every word written in this book, to the very description of the local accent, I can attest is true and it's very well written.
Fatelessness by Imre Kertész
This is a book by a Hungarian Jew who was taken off to the concentration camp of Buchenwald during WWII as a teenager. It's quite harrowing as you can imagine. Kertész won the Nobel-prize in literature in 2002.
If you're more into historical fiction, there were a couple of 19th century authors that I can recommend, so let me know. :)

Hi Claire! So happy you've introduced yourself! I'm sure you'll enjoy yourself here! :). Happy reading! :)

I will let you know what I think of They Were Counted if I read it first..

Yes, let me know because I'm curious... chances are you get to read it first as I've got a huge pile of books on the mantel still to get through first, let alone I'm re-reading War and Peace at the moment so that'll take a while to finish. :)

Hi and welcome Bruce! Glad you've joined us to read the classics! I'm sure you'll enjoy yourself here! Happy reading! :)

Hi and welcome Michelle! You're in good company here because everyone here loves to read and read classics! I recommend my favorite book, Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë. Pointers, getting involved in some of our challenges is something you might like! Enjoy yourself and happy reading! :)

We're midway through November group reads if you want to check out what we're reading now. Polls for January will be open tomorrow, so you might find more inspiration there and you can vote for your preferred choices :)
