Hi, I'm Lois :) I joined this group to have people to talk and share with on Goodreads, since most of my friends aren't really readers.

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments Hi Suzan (another literature degree! hope Kat sees you all here!) and Lois (you're in the right place, we all love to read here ^_^)! Welcome :)

So how does it work really? Because here, once you graduate from "high school", you can start at the "Med school" in a university"

Congrats to your son, Kathy! And Tytti, I'm sure Kathy will explain, but just in case your post got buried, in the US, most graduate degree programs require successful completion of a 4-yr Bachelor's degree first. Med school is considers a graduate degree program here, so first is 4-yrs of undergrad after hs, then 4 yrs of med school, then residency after, which I think is 2-yrs. And sometimes fellowship after that. It's quite a long road, educationally. And insanely expensive.

Okey, thanks. We have usually three years to Bachelor's and two to Master's degree (they count study points, not years actually), but I think the "Med school" might be six years in total, straight (or not so straight) after "HS".

Welcome Helen & Lois & Suzan ~ always glad to have more bibliophiles here!

And thanks MK for answering Tytti's question. That sounds about right. I am hoping that he can pay of the student debt before he retires! He has been blessed so far as undergraduate with no student debt.

Paula Ward | 3 comments Hello, I'm Paula from the UK. I love reading a wide range of genres with the classics being a particular favourite along with Irish fiction and short stories. I have to finish a book otherwise I feel like I've failed in life, even if I hate it. Thank you Kathy for the welcome, I look forward to many an interesting discussion on here.

Thanks Paula & Rianna for introducing yourselves. We are glad to have you with us. I too love all the free classics for my Kindle!

message 259: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Hello All -- I live in Colorado and even though I'm a voracious reader, I don't tend to read the classics. I want to challenge myself though as a reader (and as a teacher that helps kids with reading). I'm looking forward to widening my reading range. --Melissa

message 260: by Bryant (new)

Bryant Clark Hey guys my name is Bryant and I like books that enrich my life - either by making me think or making me feel (preferably both). I love reading the classics for all the obvious reasons - they are timeless due to their groundbreaking content or their overall importance to humanity etc. I'm a full time student from New York and have studied history and political science in undergrad and will begin my pursuit of a masters in theological studies this coming fall. It's hard to say what I like in a book as I've not read a wide breadth but I can say that I do not like books with needless narration or books which try to hard. Yea...books :)

message 261: by Krysta (new)

Krysta MacDonald (krystamacdonald) | 9 comments Hi there. I'm Krysta, and I love to read almost anything, but the classics have a special place in my heart. I live in southwestern Alberta, Canada, in a small town and teach in an even smaller town nearby - mostly junior high at the moment but that changes year to year. I want to read more this year than I have in adulthood, and I would love to revisit some of my favourite classics as well as cross a few off of my never-ending "need to read" list. Looking forward to it.

message 262: by MariLo (new)

MariLo | 3 comments Hi, everyone. I'm MariLo from Virginia. I love essays, history, archaeology, 19th century english literature, mysteries, cooking, gardening (though not very good at it), and all kinds of flora and fauna (especially cats).

I'm very fond of the classics, and I especially enjoy rereading books that I have loved in the past (Jane Austen, George Eliot, Balzac, Dostoyevsky).

I'm excited about the group and look forward to gaining new insights from our collective reading.

message 263: by Marcy (new)

Marcy Hello Folks! My name is Marcy. I live in Nevada - I'm married with 2 grown kids. I love to read and I've been really enjoying the classics lately so when I saw this group I knew it was for me. I'm also new to Goodreads. When I'm not reading, or working..I like to quilt, play with my dogs, exercise, and to travel.

message 264: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Knight | 1 comments Hi everyone. I'm Melissa and I live in Michigan. I'm married and work full-time as an Administrative Assistant. We have eight cats with health concerns and behavior issues; all were abandoned by their original owners and we're slowly rehabilitating them.
I love many different kinds of books, but have really neglected the classics. I'm really looking forward to being a part of the group.

message 265: by Lemon (new)

Lemon | 1 comments Hello everyone. I'm Lemon (at least that's what my friend call me). I live in beautiful California and love to read books. Lately I've been reading classics (currently on Oliver Twist), so I joined the group in hope of discussion. I look forward to reading with you guys. :)

Mandy Hello! just joined this group though I have been a goodreads member for a couple of years now. I am doing the 1001 books to read before you die list (and a couple of other list chalenges too!). The classics feature pretty well in all my reading list so it made sense that this is a perfect group to help me with that aspect.

I studied English Literature at University and I have joined the group because I love reading a bit of everything, but especially Classics and contemporary fiction. message 273: by Shraddha (new)

Shraddha Bhatia (shraddhabhatia) | 1 comments hi, my name is Shraddha and I'm from Mumbai, India. I am 24 and currently studying to be a chartered accountant. I won't say I'm an avid reader mainly because studies take up so much of my time that I barely get to read about 10 pages or something before I sleep these days. I love to read fantasy, mysteries, drama. If I like a book I end up reading it over and over again. that's why I've read Pride and Prejudice and Gone with the wind some 10 times each!! I'm not particularly fond of autobiographies or biographies or those self help type books.

Katy (kathy_h) | 9553 comments Mod
Welcome, Shraddha. Hopefully you will have some time to read a few books with us, but I totally understand how much time studies take. Glad to have you as a member.

That's awesome! Wonder if you'll notice who the 1000th is :D.

I just checked, I'm on the 8th page of 25 going backwards in time from today, so I must have joined in the 725-750 range, roughly.

Maahi Hi.
I'm Maahi, from India. Glad to be a part of this group! Although I'm still getting used to the waters here. xD
I'm trying to get more classics in my list this year. And oh, I also enjoy reading manga. :)

message 285: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Good Morning!
Im Alicia. I live in the suburbs of Chicago. I am a self proclaimed introvert, and I love to read. I work for The Mens Wearhouse. I have a Husband 2 kids and 2 dogs. I usually read Sci Fi ,YA fiction, Historic fiction, Fantasy, Mystery, Thriller, and the occasional horror. I skip the Romance section completely (I find it makes reality with my husband ..or any husband .... tough LOL) I am nearing 40 and I have been looking for the push to get back into reading the classics. I bought The Count of Monty Cristo, and it just stares at me mockingly from the bookshelf. So I hope this group can help me get me motivated.

I'll look up Isle of Passion by Laura Restrepo. It is nice to try and keep up my Spanish reading. Even if it still takes me forever.

I love reading. Stephen King is my favorite author, so I suppose horror and mystery thrillers are my favorite kind of books. I've read some classics, but I want to start really catching up.
Besides that I like playing tennis and watching anime/reading manga.
