Elena | 3 comments Thanks for the really friendly welcome! And for all the friend requests. I think this is the friendliest group I've found here on GR! Thank you all for the suggestions! I've seen a lot of movie and tv adaptations based on classic literature, but I want to read the books, too. :)

Emmitsuks | 9 comments Good day. My name is Emerico. Of course, I'm from NJ. As a child and student, I never enjoyed reading. However, now that I have a child in high school I've become a fan of the classics. My problem is trying to find the next book. Some examples of what I've liked vs not liked are:

Liked
Of Mice and Men
A Separate Peace
Lord of the Flies
Animal Farm
Fareinheight 451
Gatsby
1984
Sun also Rises
To Kill a Mockingbird
Huck Finn
Slaughterhouse 5
Catcher in the Rye

Didn't like:
Catch 22
Grapes of Wrath (didn't finish)
Red Badge of Courage (didn't finish)

Currently reading Wuthering Heights & Farwell to Arms.

Hello Emerico! Welcome to the group! From the list you gave, I have a few recommendations.
If it's not already on your radar, I highly recommend Brave New World based off your liking of 1984 and Fareinheight 451. I also recommend this month's read The Bell Jar based on Catcher in the Rye and Great Gatsby. I personally am not a huge fan of Wurhering Heights, but really loved Jane Eyre. It has a bit more of a plot and mystery. Also, Treasure Island might be a good match based off Huck Fin. My last suggestion if you are feeling adventurous is The Count of Monte Cristo (abridged). It's my personal favorite and the ultimate story of betrayal and revenge! Happy reading!

Wow, Ciera. Classic recommender pro much! :) I should come to you for suggestions also haha. Very great recommendations, personalised too! Lucky you, Emerico!

I agree The Count of Monte Cristo is an amazing read, though I'd recommend the unabridged version! :) totally worth it

Welcome Emerico! You've got such a great list of books you've read already! I hope you find many more great reads, I'm sure you will.

Based off what I've recently been reading and been wowed by, I highly recommend The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka - short story the group's reading now.

Happy reading! :)

Funny you say that. I started it a few days ago and seem to be more than 1/2 way through. I'm at the part where Heathcliff ran away with Isabel. Apparently, they both married the wrong people for the wrong reasons. Thanks for the suggestion

You'll have to excuse my ignorance. Does the group participate in group reads? I'm assuming there is a discussion afterwards? That sounds interesting. I have found my opinion of several classics was very different of others who've read the same book.

Unfortunately, I am incapable of reading anything after I saw the movie. The Godfather is my fav movie of all time. In NJ we get tested on it each week in grammar school, lol. Did u read Clockwork Orange? If so, how did u like it? Is it painful to get through?

Veronique | 1154 comments Hi everyone :0)

I'm Veronique, lifelong bookworm with Belgian, Portuguese and Spanish origins, living near London.

My reading tastes are quite eclectic, including scifi, fantasy, children's lit, YA, crime, historical, etc. I have read quite a few classics already (both 19th and 20th century), but there are always more to discover. This year I seem to be reading lots from the 1930s weirdly enough. I also really enjoy discussing books (no bookworm near me in real life), especially when others highlight aspects I would have missed.

The Godfather is my fave movie also! I read the book recently and it was excellent too, but I actually think Coppola did a superb job in taking all the "right" bits from the book and combining them perfectly.

I haven't read A Clockwork Orange yet, that will be later in the year...

Elena | 3 comments Thanks for the suggestions, Darren. I didn't know Strangers on a Train was a book first. I've seen the Hitchcock movie, and I know it's not supposed to be humorous, but I giggle at.....oh, what's his name.....the crazy one...oh! Robert Walker's part. The way he talks. "But, Guuuuuuy." lol He's so creepy and he just doesn't get it.

I've chosen 2 classics for my Goodreads challenge so far.....The Little Prince (very short, huh?) I want to see what all the fuss is about. And Northanger Abbey. That's what I've got so far. Thanks for your help, everybody! I'll be back. lol

Dianne HI all! My name is Dianne and I live in the philly burbs. Love reading and am surrounded by nonreaders and am so happy I found this group! Always been a big classics reader, and I love 19th century russian and south american authors like borges and marquez. I have two little girls, 4 and 6, and also run long distance and am a newbie guitar player in my spare time, which I found to be the silver lining to getting divorced! I'm an investment management attorney for my day job, and expect to join for 1-2 in May and most all of the reads in June (assuming the votes turn out the way I think they will!)
