Brina Hello. My name is Brina and I'm from Chicago although I now live in Ohio. I enjoy history/historical fiction and Latin American women writers as well as mysteries to clear my palette. It is interesting to see that authors who I discovered 20 years ago are now have their books on high school course lists and are considered new or contemporary classics. I am excited to be in this group.

Josh (jaygold) | 48 comments Hello everyone. I live in Chicago and enjoy reading nonfiction books, as well as fiction. Sci-fi captivates me, as well as business books, psychology/sociology, science in general, and much more.

Like some, I missed out on reading classics growing up. I'd like to catch up, and catch up in the company of others. So I look forwarding to participating and being a part of this group.

Hayat (hyassin) | 1 comments Hi everyone. My name is Hayat and I'm from London, England. I'm a wife and a mum of four kids and a part-time student. I'm a bibliophile, so I'll read any book as long as it sounds interesting. I read from a variety of genres but my favourites are pnr, uf, fantasy, historical fiction and historical romance. At the moment I'm addicted to The Walking Dead graphic novels and TV show. Last year, I began reading more contemporary romance but I'm behind on the classics and this amazing group sounds like the perfect place to read more classics.

Hiya Dean, Good to have you in this group. You might want to check out Robert Sheckley. Here's the thing about the Sheck, he is hilarious. See if you can find Immortality Inc. I don't think it's his best work but it is pure science fiction. So this guy has a car accident and wakes up in the future. I'm not doing it justice because I hope you read it. Btw your grammar is fine. It's good enough for goodreads. On the internet, the only time grammar is referenced is when the argument is lost. Happy reading.

Thanks Loretta! Looking forward to it. Do you guys do "buddy reads" also if a book you're interested in reading but it's not the book of the month?

message 2271: by Josh (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Yes we have buddy reads! Sorry I can't link at the moment as I'm on my phone, but if you look down the main page a bit, under Book chatter - Non group reads, you should see threads for our current buddy reads and one for requests. Obviously we're classic focused here, but apart from that there's no rules for buddy read books.

Welcome Rizki! It's so funny you read Pride & Prejudice and then To Kill a Mockingbird because those were the first two classics I read by choice as well and where my love for literature started to grow! Hope you enjoy Harper Lee and I highly recommend Jane Eyre. I loved it just as much if not more than P&P. Happy reading!

Dean I'm reading a R.G. Wells book too. The Island of Dr. Moreau. I'm enjoying it so far. I've not read The War of the Worlds but I did read The Time Machine which to me was only fair. You'll have to let me know how you like the one you're reading.

message 2283: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments I'm also reading The Martian Chronicles for our short story read and I'm pleasantly surprised so far. The war of the worlds is one of my challenge books for this year, so I'll probably start it next month. It will be my 4th book of his and the one with the highest expectation!

message 2284: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisarosenbergsachs) Hi Everyone, I just joined this group and am trying to get up to speed. What is the consensus here of what constitutes being a classic? I have read some of the books people discussed but didn't consider them classics at the time. FYI, not that it matters, I'm a retired social worker, mother, and grandmother, and just published my first book - Breaking the Fall. It's out there on Amazon and kindle.

message 2288: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Welcome to the group Lisa :)

What constitutes a classic is a question that often pops up. For our group purposes there is no clear cut rule, other than date restrictions. Our old school classics are books published pre 1900 and so easier to define simply from age. We spent some time debating and voting over the cut off year for our new school classic, as there were many differing opinions. The result was that eligible books should be published between 1900 and 1999. Of course some books at the later end of this scale will not seem worthy of the title modern classic or even future classic, even if they're great books. However if anyone deems a book worthy of the classic title, they are free to nominate in the relevant category (depending on the books age, length and whether we've read it before) and polls will decide the outcome. I hope this helps :)

Jackie | 80 comments Hi everyone, I'm Jackie from Switzerland.

I enjoy reading classics a lot, although I feel I haven't read that much yet (so this group is perfect!); Charles Dickens, Charlotte Brontë, and Mark Twain are among my favorite authors. Apart from classics, I love reading fantasy, and I'm very open-minded about many other, different genres and authors.

Meg M | 4 comments Hi everyone! My name is Meg and I'm a high school English teacher from Philadelphia. I am interested in reading the classics because that is what is primarily taught in classrooms; therefore, I think it is important to be exposed to as many as I can! I also want to explore what defines a classic and how that definition might have changed over time. Can't wait to get started and have great discussions!
