Jen (jennsps) | 180 comments Hi All,

I'm Jen from NJ, USA. I majored in English many moon ago and while I still enjoy reading them, haven't picked one up recently. I joined with the expectation that I will prod myself to read more classics now that I am committed to a group who reads them as well.

My favs are Pride and Prejudice and anything by Steinbeck, Faulkner and Hawthorne.

Thanks for the opportunity to read along with you.

Jen :)

Hi Jen! Welcome! Glad you've joined us! I'm sure there will be a classic or two here that will "prod" you to read more! One of my favorites is also Pride and Prejudice! Enjoy and happy reading!

Denise | 14 comments Hello. I'm Denise from Wisconsin, USA. I found this group by Googling Middlemarch Read-Along and am thrilled to have found you! I tried to read Middlemarch off and on over the years but could never get into it. A while back, I listened to the Audible version read by Juliet Stevenson and fell in love with the book. I feel like I missed out on some things by listening (no notes, translations, etc.), so want to read the book now.

I hope it's OK that I'm a little late in getting started.

EsposaDek | 0 comments Hello! I am John, currently living in Salt Lake City (born and raised in Mass) and working over in Afghanistan as a contractor. I have a lot of time on my hands over here and I look forward to filling it up with books. I'm married and have 2 cats! I met my wife while I was in the Army and stationed in South Korea. She's from South Africa. I'm going for the first time in two weeks!

This is a new account as my old account was linked to my Facebook and I decided to deactivate it but I've never put much work into maintaining a Goodreads account so I might as well be brand new to Goodreads!

I've made only one resolution this year and that is to read more and to jump outside my realm of Sci-Fi and Fantasy books. I clicked the Groups link at the top and this group was the first one I saw.

Looking forward to reading and chatting with you all!

message 1987: by Leni (new)

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 1285 comments Hi, I'm Leni, a Norwegian currently residing in Wales, UK. My favourite genres are Sci-fi, fantasy, and of course, classics (including classical horror). In an effort to "catch up on the classics" I am currently doing an A-Z challenge that I'm devoting to classics, specifically English language classics. (I'll do another one for non-English language classics later.)

I was searching goodreads groups for help with some of the trickier letters (I've concluded that there are absolutely no English language author of anything remotely qualifying as a classic whose name starts with Q, X, Y, or Z anywhere in the Commonwealth or America. Or who even have one of those letter anywhere in their names (with exception of Zadie Smith for the letter Z). I might have to take a mathematical turn and use the others as author "Unknown".

Anyway, the title of this group was fitting, and I was tickled by the idea of the Classics Bingo. So here I am!

message 1988: by Francesca (new)

Francesca (hinarcia) Hie everyone I'm Francesca from the Netherlands. I never read any classics and I would love trying to begin with reading classics. I was never much in the reading, but I can't play games anymore, so instead of playing games I'm reading now.

Hi Leni! Great point about the English language authors. If you broaden it beyond adult fiction though, you could read:

Non-fiction- Anna Quindlen and Malcolm X; poetry- Yeats W. B. (William Butler) 1865-1939 and children's- Charlotte Zolotow.

Welcome, and enjoy whatever you end up choosing to read!

message 1992: by Leni (new)

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 1285 comments Kathleen, thanks! I could kiss you. Malcolm X is a great suggestion. Yates I have actually thought about, but I've never had the patience for poetry that wasn't epic or free form. I tend to enjoy reading poetry analysis more than I enjoy the poems themselves. :P Might end up giving it another try though. The other two I've never heard of, and after looking at them I'm not sure I'd count them as classics. But you've given me hope. There might be some more Qs and Zs out there if I go beyond adult fiction. :D

Heather (ladymcheth) Hi I'm Heather from Australia. I've read a few classics in my life but want to make a concerted effort to read more so I'm really happy to stumble upon this group.
I'm a primary school teacher (so love children's literature!) but am currently on leave due to illness which has given me lots of free time so I'm taking the opportunity to read as much as I'm able to.
Looking forward to discussing classics with you all.
