Lydia | 1 comments Hi, I'm Lydia, and I love reading classic literature! My "books to read" list has no end, and there are additions weekly. I am committed to reading at least one book per week. I also enjoy painting, sketching and studying art history. I am excited to read everyone's opinions on the books we read together and learn more about my fellow readers!

Hi Lydia. Welcome. I agree that the TBR shelf "never ends." Mostly because I continually add to mine when all of my fellow readers keep giving me great new recommendations.

Glad to have you here. Join in!

Matthew | 1 comments Hello all! I'm Matthew. I suppose I would be categorized as a kook. I'm a huge aficionado of Scrabble, and compete in multiple tournaments every year. I've played piano for 9 years now, playing Chopin nocturnes, Liszt pieces and a plethora of other Romantic/Impressionistic Era pieces. I started playing the clarinet two years ago, and a year after, picked up the baritone saxophone for a jazz ensemble. My next instrument will most likely be the flute. Though in school we've just begun algebra courses (I'm yet to enter high school), I study maths at home and should be starting calculus in a few months. As of late, I've been reading 20th century literature, more recently dystopian novels (1984, Fahrenheit 451), which I find very thought provoking. I've always wanted to get into older classics, like Jane Austen and the menagerie of Russian authors, but have never really had the gumption to do so. Which is why I'm here!

Brandon Desha | 1 comments Hi Kathy,
My fiancé and I are on here with our joint FB account, but I am the one who does most of our postings on FB and all of the goodreads stuff. My name is Desha. I LOVE to read, and I really enjoy the classics. When I was a little girl I read all of the children's books in our local library and haven't stopped reading tons since. I enjoy Russian literature, especially Tolstoy, and of course Jane Austen. I read pretty much any genre, but I want to keep building my list of the classics so I thought this would be a good group to join. I look forward to meeting everyone! Goodreads is awesome!

Welcome Desha! (And Brandon)
I think you will enjoy the group and we just finished a re-read of Dr. Zhivago, so you can look through the posts and add your comments if you've read it. If not you can read any book on our list and comment when you like. We leave all the book threads open.

Sue | 1 comments Hi all! I'm Sue from Illinois. I'm recently retired, 3 children, 10 grandchildren and 2 greats. At the suggestion of my granddaughter, I started reading Frankenstein, which I never read. Reading this jogged my memory about how much I love reading classics, so I am excited to be part of your group. Thanks!

ebookclassics Hi there! I'm C.J. from Oakville, Ontario, Canada. I recently rediscovered my love of reading after having kids. Now I want to read everything! Right now I'm reading Wolf Hall and Insurgent from the Divergent series. I just finished Paradise Lost which was challenging, but worth the effort.

Welcome to the group, C.J. So glad you are back to reading. I really enjoyed Wolf Hall and Insurgent both too. I haven't taken the time to read Paradise Lost yet, but I do have it on my TBR list. I just need to move it up.

Glad you found us. We have some polls open and will open the poll for our 2nd Quarter read this week.

message 161: by Laura (new)

Laura | 4 comments Thanks for your warm welcome Kathy.

Hi, I am Laura, from Sao Paulo, Brazil. I just found this interesting group by chance.

I've joined GR since Feb. 2008 and, since then, I've been joining some interesting groups, like: Victorians, The Readers Review, Boxall's 1001 books you must read before you die, Constant Reader, Comfort Reads, Mount TBR Challenge, Historical Mystery Lovers, Classic Historical Fiction and some other groups.

I love to read: classics (always!!), contemporary fiction, historical fiction, suspense and thriller, historical mystery, biographies and history as well. I've read many fantasy and science-fiction books in the past but they are not my favorites genres nowadays.

message 166: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Hello everybody! My name is Andrea and I live in Napa, California. My New Years resolution last year was to read as many classics as I could because I didn't read any of them growing up. It was so satisfying (Jane Eyre is my FAVORITE) that it's now a genre that I'm sort of addicted to. I picked Crime and Punishment for my book club last year and they were not happy with me - I had to promise not to do that again (I was the only one who finished it). My other favorite genre is historical fiction. I have also read all of the books in the Songs of Ice and Fire series so I'm starting to look into reading more fantasy/science-fiction type books but I have no idea where to start. Looking forward to getting to know all of you and what your favorite books are!

Anthony Moreira | 1 comments Hello everybody! My name is Anthony and i live in Lyon, France. I'm 24 and I work as a web developper. I'm a huge sci-fi, fantasy fan even though i read some classics now and then. The next book I want to read is war and peace by Leo Tolstoi.
I'm also keen on self help books and social dynamics which I find very interesting ! (Gnothi seauton)

So glad to have you here, Anthony! I love sci-fi too. It is my favorite genre, but in the past few years I've worked on broadening my reading. If you want to read War & Peace go ahead and place your vote here: https://www.goodreads.com/poll/show/9...

But voting does end today ~ unless of course we end up with a tie.

message 172: by Janice (last edited Mar 02, 2014 01:19PM) (new)

Janice (jan_i_c_e) Hello Everyone! My name is Janice and I like to read a variety of genres. However, for years I've been collecting classic novels in hopes of eventually reading them, but my list of "to-read" continually grows and the classics are pushed to the back but this year I'd like to make more of an effort to start reading more classic books.

Besides reading, I enjoy knitting, scrapbooking, and painting. I live in Denver with my boyfriend and our two energetic dogs. I look forward to reading classics with you all!

message 174: by Elisa (new)

Elisa | 3 comments Hi Everyone!
Nice to be part of this group.
I'm from Chile but I've lived in Brazil for many years.
My genres are Historical Novel, Horror, Gothic, Thriller, Memoir, Mystery and Classics.
I usually read two or three books at the same time and I make a point of at least one of them has to be a Classic.
At the moment I'm reading H.G.Wells, Men like Gods and I think my next one on the waiting list will be The Scarlet Plague by Jack London.
Apart from reading I love learning English and I love dogs.

message 175: by Tytti (new)

Tytti | 1010 comments Hi, Elisa,

a couple of my friends have actually visited Chile during the last few years (on separate trips). They had a great time.

I was just talking with another friend that we haven't really read that many books from Latin America. Any recommendations from Chilean or Brazilian authors/set in there? I just bought La fiesta del chivo (I know it's neither).

Katy (kathy_h) | 9553 comments Mod
Welcome Elisa! So what other languages do you speak then besides English, Spanish & Portuguese? My son lived in Brazil for a couple of years and loved the people there.

A couple of my favorite authors are from Chile: Pablo Neruda Pablo Neruda the famous poet and Isabel Allende Isabel Allende who write beautiful Magic Realism.

Welcome!

message 177: by Elisa (new)

Elisa | 3 comments Hi Tytti,
Thank you for your nice words.
Are you enjoying M. V. Llosa? I haven't read that one yet!
From Brazil I'd recommend you to read Érico Veríssimo who wrote a trilogy of novels called Time and Wind (O tempo e o vento), if you like Historical Novels I'm sure you'll enjoy reading this book. Other authors I'll suggest are Maria José Dupré, Jorge Amado, Graciliano Ramos and Clarice Lispector.
From Chile Gabriela Mistral,if you like poetry you must read "Death Sonnets".
Others are José Donoso, Roberto Bolaño, Nicanor Parra and of course Pablo Neruda and Isabel Allende.

message 178: by Elisa (new)

Elisa | 3 comments Thank you Kathy for your welcome and your nice words.

Since I started learning English, I haven't stopped reading books in English. I think I'll be and eternal student of the English language.
That reminds me that I haven't read any book in Portuguese or Spanish for a couple of years. Which is very bad indeed!

My first introduction to Pablo Neruda was in Spanish. It seemed to me that his poems lost something in the translation to English. I too need to read a book in Spanish again. It has been a long while -- I am not a native or very fluent speaker so it takes me a long long time,

message 180: by Tytti (new)

Tytti | 1010 comments Elisa wrote: "Are you enjoying M. V. Llosa? I haven't read that one yet!"

No, I just bought it. I try to figure out what I want to read next. That sounds like a tough read so maybe a bit later, I'd like something lighter for now.

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately most of those I checked don't seem to have been translated. :-/ I did find one in Finnish, though. (The probability that I will read a long, unknown trilogy in English isn't very good, even if I were able to find it...)

That "magic realism" is something I don't think I have ever read. I guess I prefer realism more. I don't really care for poetry, either, it's just not my thing. I haven't even read Kalevala.

message 191: by Sky (new)

Sky (skybe) | 1 comments Hi all! I live in Australia and am currently studying Victorian literature. At the moment, I am reading the brick that is 'Middlemarch'. A worthy read and I am glad that I have. Yet I am a little jealous with the time it is taking up and looking forward to being able to get on with the next novel on the list, 'Jane Eyre'. Also, I think that Eliot is a little bit of a show off with an epigraph at the beginning of each chapter, some in Latin others in French! I get it already!! She was really really smart! S

Sandy | 41 comments Bula vinaka. I am Sandy, currently a Peace Corps Volunteer stationed in Labasa, Vanua Levu, Fiji. Yes, the PC is in Fiji since it is a third world country and no am not near the beach or water for that matter. I will be finishing my assignment the end of October. Plan to travel through Asia for approximately 5 months before returning home to the U.S. Am a resident of Phoenix, AZ.

I have an awful lot of free time on my hands so am reading a lot. I established a reading order for myself which I am trying to stick with as follows: 1. Newly published book 2. TBR pile 3. 2014 declared TBR pile 4. Classic 5. Non-fiction. Just read Jane Eyre, thought it was terrific and not sure why I ever waited to long to read it.

I couldn't live without water. We have lakes everywhere. Or the sea if you live on the coast. Going swimming for the first time after the winter is always great.

One of the beaches, less than 3 km from the city center: http://matkaideoita.com/kuvat/tampere... :-P

Oh, we can thank the ice age for that. That esker in the pic is also from that time, it's protected in part, I believe.

message 199: by Caroline (new)

Caroline | 1 comments Hi my name is Caroline, I live with my boyfriend in Plymouth, England and I am in my mid 30s.

I promised myself a couple of years ago I would work my way through classic novels although I have always been an avid reader, I liked the challenge and I have been doing quite well. I enjoy reading the last page of a book and feeling satisfied and then being able to discuss what I think about it. My boyfriend reads crime novels though, never classics, so we never chat about our books!!!

My favourite classic is Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. I was surprised by how dark the novel is. I also like The grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck but I didn't always enjoy reading it at the time, I thought it quite challenging but the powerful way he described human struggle has left it's mark with me.

I have struggled reading Middlemarch by George Eliot so that still remains on my to finish list. Charles Dickens is next on my list.

Anyway looking forward to the discussions and books recommended to read.

Caroline

Labasa is a bit inland. The nearest swimmable beach, Korvotu, is 1 hour bus ride plus a 30 minute walk. The beaches closer to Labasa have mangroves, so not swimmable and the water is brackish. People have piggery's right by the ocean so you really do not want swim there, yuck!
