Hi. I'm Lori from Oklahoma. I had a question...What is the definition of a Classic according to the group's definition?

I don't think we have one...

message 1103: by [deleted user] (new)

I guess that's why I couldn't find one. ;)

Welcome to the group, Chess! I'm glad you like the format of our group reads. I hope you join us in discussions!

Hi Dave! We have several group reads each month and previous months' discussion threads always remain open for comment, so I hope you find the inspiration you're looking for. Welcome to the group!

Jessica Hi there! My name is Jessica, I'm almost 19. About to start university with a major in Archaeology. I look forward to getting through and appreciating more classics (both modern and ancient)

message 1109: by Phaedra (new)

Phaedra (phaederator) | 1 comments Hi everybody! My name is Phaedra and I currently reside in Alabama, land of cotton and sweet tea. I read a little bit of everything, and my "currently reading" pile usually consists of a non-fiction book of some sort, at least one fantasy or sci-fi (I'm working my through the Hugo awards), and some sort of guilty-pleasure junk food book (I just finished Takedown Twenty by Janet Evanovich and I feel mildly ashamed, like someone caught me stuffing my face with ice cream straight from the carton.)

I work in retail and have two small children, so I can't read as much as I'd like, especially since I'm getting too old for all-nighters under the covers with a flashlight. I joined the group to help direct my to-read pile and participate in coherent adult conversation.

Welcome Phaedra. I also live in the land of cotton, only in my case it is on the south plains of Texas. Don't be ashamed of junk food books. We all read some I'm sure. I hope you enjoy our group.

Hi Phaedra: Welcome to the group! It's always an encouragement to see what other people are reading and the challenges help take down the To Read pile. I do similar to what you do, I have three or four going at once and it just depends on what my mood is. Hope you enjoy the group like I do.

Lilly | 447 comments Hi everyone ;)
I'm Lilly from Augsburg (Bavaria), 26, and student of history, literature, and some other stuff. I've been trying to catch up with my classics for a while now; though I must confess, after 5 years of studying, my "to-do" list only ever seems to grow faster than the "done" list. :D There's never enough time.
My favorite genre is fantasy (though I love 18th and 19th century novels just as well). Robert Jordan, Garth Nix, Patrick Rothfuss ... just to name a few.
In my spare time I do ballroom dancing, writing, and painting. I also love photography.
Currently, I'm spending some effort on Thoreau's "Walden" and Woolf's "To the Lighthouse", as I have to write term papers on both of them.
I'm looking foreward to this group, as it will give me some good excuse to read some books outside classes. :D

message 1118: by [deleted user] (new)

Hey. I'm a reader. Duh. Otherwise I'm in the wrong place. Right? I read a little of everything. But my loves are fantasy, horror, and historical.
I recently got laid off (again) and so I'm using my free time to read (and reread) books I've been meaning to get to. Which includes classics.
Some of my favorite classics are, Count of Monte Cristo, Les Miserables, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Frankenstein, Dracula, Phantom of the Opera, and others...
And here's to finding more favorites with all you.
:)

message 1120: by Renee (new)

Renee M Hi, I'm Renee. I live and teach in Southern New Jersey. I read all genres, but tend to choose mostly 19th Century novels. The fact that you have divided your attention between old and new classics is intriguing. I'm hoping to join in for some of your group reads and expand my own collection of completed classics. :)

My name is Kassie and I am a 23-year-old living in Ohio. I love to read both fiction and nonfiction, but am hoping this group helps me conquer my long list of TBR classics. I have "read along" the past couple months with Cranford, The Count of Monte Cristo, and The Canterville Ghost, and am looking forward to participating in discussions!

Niles (professorx2) | 35 comments Hello everyone. My name is Niles. I am recently retired, and as I have always loved to read. I felt this group would be a goog fit for me since my knowledge of the classics comes primarily from high school and college literature classes. These books have been deemed to have lasting value by people far more intelligent than I, and I did enjoy most of those I read. I think it will help me to have other like minded individuals involved in the discussions. I was never much for class participation in school but hopefully I have outgrown that trait. Now if I can just find a good place to jump in!

Hello Niles! The great thing about Goodreads groups is that you can participate as much as you want, and there is never a book report due or a test! If you'd like to jump in to one of our March group reads, they will be: Mrs. Dalloway, Notes from Underground, and The Scarlet Pimpernel. We will also be completing the last month of our three month quarterly read of The Count of Monte Cristo. If none of those appeal to you, you can choose any of our previous group reads and add to their discussion threads. If you like games, our 2015 Classics Bingo game might give you some inspiration. Welcome to the group! :-)

message 1133: by Jancarlo (new)

Jancarlo Rodriguez | 2 comments Hello everyone my name is Jancarlo, or just Jan for short. I'm a 23 years old who enjoys the classics because they take me into a time and place in history that would otherwise be unknown to me, for example right now I'm reading Crime and Punishment for the first time, exploring 19th century Russia and the mind of its protagonist Raskolnikov. I'm looking forward to reading and discussing these books with you all.

message 1134: by Christine (new)

Christine | 971 comments Welcome to the group, Jan! I'm glad you have joined us. It sounds like you are enjoying Crime and Punishment. I have that book on my to-read list for this year, too! That book has been a group read in the past, so I invite you to add your comments to the book's discussion thread. I hope you enjoy our group!

I will be reading a lot of classics as I get to them

message 1138: by Tytti (new)

Tytti | 1010 comments I guess they are genre classics at least, but if you read only them then I wouldn't count it as "reading classics". It's too one-sided for that. :-)

message 1141: by Tytti (new)

Tytti | 1010 comments I have Poe on my classics list and a couple of earlier vampire stories, too, not Stoker's though. But I recommend Anna Karenina from Tolstoy, it might be easier to tackle first than W&P. I read most of the Sherlock Holmes stories as a kid.

Sounds like some good choices! After reading Pride and Prejudice last month, I plan to try to read some more Austen this year also. Happy reading!

Sadia Shahid Hi, everyone. I'm Sadia from Saudi Arabia.
I have a reading list of about 11 pages, front and back. lol I'm 21 years of age, always loved reading, but never really indulged myself properly into it until almost 2 years ago. I love crime thrillers, and mystery, but I'm also a student of literature and journalism so I basically read anything that sounds interesting. I finally have a little time on my hands, and starting with classical works such as of Salinger, Burgess, Nabokov, Orwell, Yates, Hemingway, Dickens, Dostoyevsky, Kafka's and many more. I understand some of these you guys might've read in highschool, but I didn't so wish me luck. :)
Looking forward to having a companion for future book hangovers. :D all of my friends here are only interested in twilight and 50 shades kind of books. ._.

I'm Iselin from Germany and I just found this group while trying to locate my edition of Heidi on Goodreads (I want to reread it this year). I saw you were reading great books, so here I am!

I'm currently wrapping up uni (German Lit and Computational Linguistics), writing a thesis on my favourite German book, Measuring the World.

I love being outdoors, cinema, rowing, traveling, ... cake. I love cake too.

Looking forward to chatting and reading with you!
