Welcome to the group, Julia! One of the things I enjoy about this group is that it does prompt me to read a lot of the classics I feel like I "missed" during my formal education. I hope you enjoy reading with us!

Hi, welcome everyone. I haven't been real active lately. But this is a fun group and I hope you all find a good home here for reading.

Jaimee | 16 comments Oh wow! Maybe I’m Alison’s long lost twin??? I’m Jaime. I’m also from Michigan, a librarian, and love to read, write and paint! :P
I typically like to read books from a variety of genres- classics, historical fiction, suspense/mystery, Christian, and non-fiction. I’m currently reading The Count of Monte Cristo.

Haha! Well, you two should have a lot to talk about. :-)

Welcome to the group! The Count of Monte Cristo is currently in the lead in the poll to decide our Quarterly Long Read that begins in January. If it wins, please join in the group read discussion thread with us!

Jamie Logan (jamietaylorlogan) | 2 comments You've got another Jamie in the group! Except I'm not from Michigan. I'm not particular in my reading preferences. I like reading about philosophy, religion, music, and other non-fiction topics, but I do love my fiction, classic or otherwise. I've recently had a borderline compulsive need to constantly update my overwhelming friend list on what exactly I'm reading. Although I'm sure my six friends are loving my daily contributions to the good of the Internet, I would love to actually engage in some Goodreads discussion on here and find out about more classics that I've overlooked in the past. Some of my hobbies are drinking coffee and embarrassing myself. Right now I'm reading 1Q84, which I'm pretty sure can be used as a weapon of self-defense with its impressive and slightly intimidating weight.

Welcome to the group Jamie! I hope you join in our discussions with us. I have been meaning to read some Murakami for awhile now, but I think I will start with one of his shorter works! Are you enjoying IQ84 so far?

So far it's decent. His continuous speculation of women's chest sizes/shapes could take up about six pages worth of text. He also rephrases things a lot, but maybe there's something lost in translation? I've got a couple of his other books I'm eyeing next, all of which are (thankfully) shorter than this one.

message 1014: by Monique (new)

Monique Hi, I'm Monique from Wagga Wagga, NSW Australia. Since studying a B Arts in my early 40s with a Literature focus, I now love to lose myself in classical literature of many genres - as well as many modern fiction, biographies and whatever my kids are reading. I am married with 5 children and have worked in marketing for 10 years. I like cycling for fun; walking for exercise; reading (of course); movie watching with my kids (quite a range is covered, with the LOTRs on the TV at this moment) and catching up with friends.

Susan (edgarsden) Hi there, I'm Natalie, currently living in beautiful Oxford, England. I obviously love reading, especially american literature (classic and a bit of modern). I want to catch up and re-read some classics, so I hope I will find lots of inspirations in this nice group ;).

message 1017: by Jenna (new)

Jenna Richardson (jennarich) | 7 comments Hi, I'm Jenna. I am currently living in Northwest Arkansas, but was born and raised in Central Florida (yes, that basically means Disney). I love to read just about anything I can get my hands on. My favorite book of all time is Pride and Prejudice, I reread it constantly. I just moved here within the last year and the library has become my best friend! Outside of working and reading I am an avid tennis player and love to walk and bike the trails near me. I particularly love the classics, so I think this group will provide a lot of inspiration. The 2015 BINGO challenge is what really sold me on it!

When I'm not reading, I'm making music.

Welcome to the group, April! I have read very few French classics, although I am trying to work my way through an English translation of Les Miserables right now for our 4th quarter Long Read. Good book so far, but it definitely requires commitment! I hope you enjoy reading with us. :-)

Shantel Cross Hello my name is Shantel and I'm new to goodreads actually found it on accident on Instagram and it revived my love for reading. I'm a young mom with a very vibrant 3 year old that allows me to read in peace. I felt quite embarrassed to see that I haven't read many of these "classics" and wanted to begin immediately. I'm happy I found this group to let me know I'm not alone in the lack of not reading classics. I can not wait to get started in my first online book club

Jennifer Annan House (jannanhouse) Good morning, everyone. I'm Jennifer, I live in Santa Barbara with my husband. We have 3 grown children. I am the administrator of our book club here and at dinner Tuesday night we decided we should read a classic in 2015. I so appreciate that there is a group on Goodreads dedicated to that!

I love hiking and traveling, and reading (of course!). I especially like new authors and debut novels. And now, I'm on the hunt for a classic that 7 very diverse women would all enjoy reading.

Well, I feel it's my duty as a Finn to suggest The Egyptian. Almost everyone I know who has read it has thought that it is a great book, young (as in teenagers), old, men, women... It is also one of those books people read many times and always find different aspects from the story, depending on their life experiences. (And it was the most sold foreign bestseller for about 30 years in the US until The Name of the Rose took that place.)

Casey | 1 comments Hey everyone, I'm Casey from northern CA, I tend to get obsessed with whatever I am reading, and i wondered if it might be fun to discuss my obsession, at the moment its Dickens' 'Nicholas Nickleby' though recently I finished 'East of Eden' and Steinbeck was all new to me since i hadn't read him since high school, and I'm 32 now...any recommendations for another Steinbeck novel (Besides Grapes of Wrath and 'Of Mice and Men')?

message 1037: by Jennifer Annan (new)

Jennifer Annan House (jannanhouse) Thanks, Christine! Here's a question for you all. I would like to read Anna Karenina as our book club classic, but, due to length, I'm getting some push back. Could anyone recommend a classic (new or old) that comes in at around 300-400 pages? Thanks!

Berlin Alexanderplatz
The Secret of the Kingdom
The Dark Angel
The Plague
Leo Africanus
The Bohemians of the Latin Quarter: Scenes de la Vie de Boheme

Asif Halim (asifhalimdeepon) Hi there folks, I'm Deepon from Bangladesh. To be completely truthful, I'm an omnivorous when it comes to books, though a little weakness for classics and regular non-fictions is quite vaguely felt. And, it's the very first goodreads groups I've requested to join, in fact the very first in my internet life!

Hope to discover surprising things here!

Ciao! :)

Leandra (lionflowers) | 2 comments Hi everyone!

My name is Leandra. I live in New Mexico, but I'm hoping to eventually have a career change and move abroad. I currently work at a library, which is awesome, but I really, really want a job that involves traveling.

My favorite genres are fantasy, sci-fi, historical fiction, and middle-grade (like Percy Jackson, Redwall...)

I've been wanting to read the classics for ages now, and I'm setting that as my personal 2015 challenge. Coincidentally, I was going to start with The Count of Monte Cristo, so I'm even more excited to join this group.

I'm looking forward to reading with you all!

Amanda (tnbooklover) Hi Everyone,

I'm Amanda and I live in Knoxville TN. My reading is a mix of new releases, classics, and whatever you call what falls in between. I read a mix of paper books, ebooks, and audiobooks. In 2015 I really want to focus more of my reading on classics so I'm excited about the classics challenge. I'll be combing my shelves in the next few days to make my list. Looking forward to chatting about books with this group!
