I had to read it 3 times in a row, it was that delightful. The romance is perfectly built, getting deep into the psychology of both genders and showing how tormenting (and why) a relationship can be. Besides, the best thing about it is that the love story is the territory in which the beliefs, the spirituality and the fate of the two characters are shown. It is simply connected to everything in the book. If you see it as separate, you miss on a lot.

It could be weird for reader who are not famil

What was lost and is gone forever.

The novel purports to be the diary of one John Angelos, a mysterious half-Greek, half Latin participant in the final defence of Constantinople in 1453.

The fall of Constantinople to the armies of Mehmet the Conqueror in May 1453 was a cataclysmic event. Yet it has always surprised me how few in the west responded to the Byzantine call for help. Mehmet's preparations were evident for a long time and the city was able to hold out for nearly two months. It is an ama

I don't think its as good as some of his earlier books, but... to my opinion it gives an excellent picture of the absolutely weird network of the different intersecting interests during Constantinople's last christian days (intersecting among the emperor, his prime minister, the muslims, the Genovese and the rest western soldiers etc etc.)
This is the reason I consider it a very useful book for anyone interested to understand what really happend in Constantinople back in 1453.

The story started with a romance that I didn't like, but it evolved into a powerful relationship between two people facing their fate and imminent destruction. An empire totally betrayed by its "allies" trying to stand up and end in a heroic way is the core of this wonderful novel written by Mika Waltari. I think that Sinuhe was more powerful regarding words and scenes but the end of this novel reached the top in emotions. I am Greek, so it spoke to my heart and I felt the agony of the last Gree ...more

You know I really had to struggle through the first hundreds of pages as they felt so tedious. However, now that I have finished the book, I really feel that this was one of the best reading experiences I've had this year. Finally Waltari managed to grow more mature out of his war-provoked childishness in writing Sinuhe the Egyptian and especially Mikael El-Hakim. This time he even bothered to use a bit different main characters as seen in the aforementioned books.

This is a historical novel at

Written as a journal in the first person of a French mercenary soldier, Jean Ange [John Angelos], this was a vivid retelling of the Fall of Constantinople in 1453 -- preparation for the Siege, the Siege itself, and the aftermath. To my mind, the love interest took up too much of the story. This was all in all a fascinating glimpse into an often-neglected piece of history.

Sublime! I was reading this book at the same time as another shorter simpler book, and this went down much faster. Indeed the love story is the context in which everything is revealed; why else would the book open with their unforgettable first encounter?

Ihmisen matka elämän haasteiden läpi, etsien totuutta tästä elämästä ja tuonpuoleisesta.

Johannes-parka.

An interesting historical novel that was unfortunately burdened with a toilsome romance. Well researched, though obviously tainted by a heavy reliance on Barbaro's chronicle, Waltari maintains his context and continuity well and, with one really exceptional case, does not step beyond the bounds of historical plausibility. His knowledge of various figures is impressive though I remain doubtful of many of his characterizations, the motivations he provides for people in his world make sense given h ...more

historiquemment tres bien.

Käsittämättömän hieno kirja kaikille 1400-1500-luvun Euroopan historiasta kiinnostuneille! Kirja on paikoin ultraväkivaltainen, ehdottomasti väkivaltaisimpia teoksia Waltarin laajassa historiallisten romaanien tuotannossa.

Johannes Angelos osoittaa kerronnallaan Waltarin mittaamattoman laajan knoppitietovaran

Korkeiden ennakko-odotusten takia lukukokemuksesta tuli pieni pettymys.

Kirjan loppu on kuitenkin huikeaa Waltaria.

Takes place just before and during the Ottoman Empire's takeover of Constantinople. I learned a LOT about this era that my college courses never really touched on. As always, Waltari's main character is in the thick of battles, politics and more. But also as always, Waltari does a poor job of portraying women and there was a bit too much of the relationship aspect of the main character and his love interest.

Problem stanowi tu głównie Johannes Angelos, którego - w przeciwieństwie do Sinuhe - poznajemy w dość późnym etapie życia, i jest to etap wyj

Mika Toimi Waltari was a Finnish historical novelist, best known for his magnum opus The Egyptian.
Waltari was born in Helsinki and lost his father, a Lutheran pastor, at the age of five. As a boy, he witnessed the Finnish Civil War in Helsinki. Later he enrolled in the University of Helsinki as a theology student, according to his mother's wishes, but soon abandoned theology in favour of philosoph

“And what will be their fate?” he asked. “Forgive me master, but I am curious to know, so that my heart may prepare itself.”

“Flesh without spirit,” I said. “Life without hope, the slavery of mankind-a bondage so hopeless that slaves will no longer know they are slaves. Wealth without happiness, abundance without the power to enjoy it. The death of the spirit.”

“Today I saw you and spoke to you for the first time.
It was like an earthquake; everything in me was overturned, the graves of my heart were opened and my own nature was strange to me.
I am forty, and I believed I had reached the autumn of life.
I had wandered far, known much and lived many lives. The Lord had spoken to me, manifesting Himself in many ways; to me angels had revealed themselves and I had not believed them. But when I saw you I was compelled to believe, because of the miracle that happened to me.”
