MK (wisny) | 2579 comments Heya, John, welcome! I just read my first Vonnegut a couple months ago (Slaughterhouse-Five), followed it up the next month with another (Breakfast of Champions). I'm a fan.

Looking forward to seeing you in the stacks :).

message 802: by Greg (new)

Greg | 1020 comments Hi all, I'm Greg, and I live in lovely California with about an hour work commute each way. Even before that, I was an avid reader, but now with the commute I go through audiobooks like crazy (maybe one a week). I read a pretty good variety: classics, poetry, fantasy/sci-fi, YA, mystery, even a little psychology. I like pretty much anything with deep and interesting characterizations - beautiful writing and a sense of wonder being a nice bonus. Some favorite writers: Edith Wharton, Katherine Mansfield, Kazuo Ishiguro, Charles de Lint, Neil Gaiman, Denise Levertov, Brian Selznick, Lynda Barry, Elizabeth George, and Virginia Woolf.

Holly | 37 comments Hello everyone! I'm Holly, and I'd really like to get in the habit of reading more classics. So far, I've only read two. I think I need to step it up a bit.

Frances Macknight | 21 comments I like seeing favorite authors mentioned, as Gregg did. Four of them are among my favourites too, so I'll take a go at the other authors he named. Great to be stimulated to try new authors.

Thanks Frances! There's a lot of variety in my list there - a good helping of literature, a couple fantasy writers, a mystery writer, a modern poet, and even a writer of comics (Lynda Barry is not for everyone, but I find her comics hilarious - the straight books not so much). Hope I don't mislead you :) But I know what you mean - I love being introduced to new authors too! I already found a couple books mentioned in various threads of the group that I have an eye on myself!

message 809: by Alex (new)

Alex Daniel (alexddd) Hi all! I'm new to the group. :)

I was directed here by an anonymous redditor (he mentioned it offhand in a conversation), but I haven't been able to since find that post on Reddit, so I can't give her/him credit.

This will be my first book club ever. I've looked around for one, but because I've lived in small towns most of my life, I haven't really been able to find anything of the sort. I've lurked around on GoodReads for some time, but never committed to anything. I'd like to change that.

I work in a science-heavy profession, and a lot of the people that I work with have no interest at all in fiction. Fiction keeps me tether to the world. It keeps my eyes open. I've been reading a lot of more modern/contemporary books lately, but nothing beats a classic. Moby Dick and Frankenstein are among my absolute favorites. I'm excited to begin discovering some books with this group! :)

Hope to read your comments in the book discussions.

createjoy | 13 comments Hi, I am "m", aka createjoy. I am married, with two grown sons, two DIL's, and one new grandchild. My husband and I own a business together, and live in HI and CA.

I have always been a reader. I enjoy architecture, interior designs, art, and dabble in all three.

I look forward to sharing the classics with this group.

Bernardo Garrido (bernisbooks) | 1 comments Hello I'm Berni, 26 and I live in Spain although I'll be relocating to the Bay Area in August to start my MBA at Berkeley, exciting!

Now that I'm off to business school and will no longer be working (I was in Investment Banking for 4 years) I hope to be able to read a lot more and, specifically, catch up on my classics!!

message 815: by Victoria (new)

Victoria Hello everyone! I just finished my university degree in English literature (lord only knows what job I'll get with that!) so I can talk forever about novels and authors (it was pretty much just a glorified book club lol). I enjoy writing daily as well. I currently have a list of 102 books that I would like to read (before I die realistically lol) most of which are classics. Looking for a forum to discuss chapters, plot, characters, setting etc. Excited to have found you guys!! :D

message 816: by MK (new)

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments Hi Victoria! Welcome :)
Fabulous, glad you found us. We like to talk about novels and authors, so I think you'll fit right in :)
Haha, funny on glorified book club! Never thought of it like that, but I can see what you mean. Must have made for a fun course of study.

Amberthereader | 3 comments Hello everyone,
My name is Amber and I am an office manager and a nanny from Southeastern Michigan. I love to paint, listen to music and of course I have an addiction to reading! My favorite author has to be Jane Austen but I enjoy many of the classics as well. I will read pretty much anything I can get my hands on. I am very glad I found this group and look forward to discussing the classics, etc!

message 820: by Linnea (new)

Linnea (linnearlines) Hi! I'm Linnea, a 19 year old girl from Sweden. I recently graduated from the International Baccalaureate, an international high school program completely taught in English. Right now I'm working in health care, hoping to save up some money for volunteer work in South- or Central America, before I apply to college/university. I play football (soccer) and have always loved to read. I suppose I'm currently trying to find my niche; my favorites and preferences. Which is why I read just about anything that seems interesting. I look forward to hearing people's opinions and thoughts on the classics as I try to catch up! :)

Nathan | 302 comments Hi! I'm Nathan. I'm a bread baker and poet from Michigan.

I like a wide variety of genre fiction, literature and poetry, but the classics are my favorite. I've read more classics than most people I've met...at least people my age, but I feel like I've barely scratched the surface.

I'm looking forward to some good discussions and to reading some books I might not have picked on my own.

message 828: by MK (new)

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments Hey Nathan! Welcome :)

Mughees :D. The quizzes and challenges are def a fun way to do that. Nathan, I agree, I notice that at nomination time every month. There's SOOOO many great titles to be discovered! I love nomination time :D

message 829: by Alissa (new)

Alissa Patrick (apatrick12211) Welcome Nathan!

MK i totally agree- the nomination time is so exciting haha and I love that this group does it far in advance! The efficiency of the mods are amazing- you guys are awesome!

And I definitely love that I'm reading classics again (from disliking them in high school to loving them now), or discovering classics I never knew about. Love this group!

message 830: by MK (new)

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments awww you're awesome, Alissa. tanx! (I'm saying it the Irish way, with no 'th' sound ... can you 'hear' my accent? *grin*)

I agree on rediscovering classics! For me as well - disliked almost every one in hs heh, and for me as well on the difference and discovery now, it's because of this group :).

message 831: by Kaycie (new)

Kaycie | 5 comments Hi all! I am Kaycie from Los Angeles. Love classics and read a ton, and love that this group has more than one read each month! Its awesome to still have a book that I can read as part of a group if I have already read one of the monthly books. And it give a lot more options in terms of great nominations and active participants in multiple group discussions at a time! Great group, guys!

message 832: by Melissa (ladybug) (new)

Melissa (ladybug) Hello everyone! I am Melissa and I live in New Mexico. I am not married, don't have any children and am not dating. :) I will read just about anything except for non-fiction books concerning sports and most hobbies. I also don't enjoy erotica or extreme horror.

I love to read: some history and science, classics, Sci-Fi, fantasy especially high fantasy, biographies, YA, Children's (I am a child at heart), some Chick-Lit, Romance (not Erotica), and some paranormal romances such as Christine Feehan, etc...

My hobbies are as varied. I like to ride a bicycle, crochet, embroider, play with my dog, and to come online to FB and Goodreads. :) I work for the local Police Department and have fun every day.

message 833: by Dawn (new)

Dawn | 2 comments Hello to all classics lovers! I'm Dawn from California. I've always loved reading, but have really wanted to increase my have-read collection of classic novels. I didn't really know where to begin & then I stumbled across this book club & am so excited to see there are others out there like me. I look forward to catching up on the classics with all of you.

Quick question...there are several books listed as "currently reading," are you reading all of these books right now? Thank you!

message 834: by Tytti (new)

Tytti | 1010 comments Dawn wrote: "Quick question...there are several books listed as "currently reading," are you reading all of these books right now?"

Yes, the group is, but not all members are reading all, some may not be reading any of them.

Dorian Gray is a re-read for the group for this month (I will probably start that next week), The Grapes of Wrath and Emma are new books for July (I won't be reading them). Anna Karenina is a quarterly read because of its length (also a re-read), from July to September, and I am reading it at the moment.

Dawn | 2 comments Thank you...that was very helpful!

message 836: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Kaycie, Melissa and Dawn!! This is a fun group and we have awesome moderators, so I hope you all enjoy yourselves.

Thanks Tytti for the thorough answer to Dawn's question. (I was intending to answer but you did a better job before I had an opportunity to post!!)

I will add for Dawn, that you can pick and choose which "currently reading" books you prefer to read. Should you read a couple of chapters in a book and decide you would rather not continue, that is ok too. (I have done that once or twice myself.) Also, discussion threads from past books we have read remain active, so feel free to read one of them as well if you prefer. All opinions are welcome for book discussions and we have had some lively debates lately, which makes things fun!! Lots of choices but no pressure either--

Happy reading everyone!!

Anna (Annarama) | 1 comments Greetings.

Anna here. 16. Avid reader. Semicolon sympathizer. Proponent of all things delightfuly absurd, genuinely decent, questionably sane or anything involving books and quiet places where people are scarce.

I've been sinking my teeth into some of the meatier literature that has since been neglected on my shelves and this seems like a great support group for the cause. I'd love to hear recommendations or meet anyone with similar tastes. Do feel free to pop in and say hello, most people find me relatively friendly.

Elsa | 2 comments Hello! I'm Elsa from Washington state. I've always loves the classics but have somehow moved away from them in the past few years. I ran across a neat BBC list of great books and that has me excited to tackle some that are new to me.

I'm also a writer and love to work on historical fiction, so I'm often able to call reading "research" which is pretty fabulous. :)

Welcome all to the group -- nice friendly people here, I hope you enjoy it.

message 841: by Alice (new)

Alice (admoneo) Hey, I'm Alice and I'm from Romania. I love reading, having as many books as possible on my shelves and then feeling guilty about buying more. I'll give anything a try and end up liking many genres, but my current favorite authors are Stephen King, George Orwell, Franz Kafka and George RR Martin.

I'm also very passionate about cinema. I love to go over old classics, keep myself up to date to new productions and learn about the history of film. I'd sell my soul to be able to work in the movie industry.

I joined this group because I realized that I've only read a shamefully few classics, and since I challenged myself this year to get my hands on as many classics as I can, this seems like the support I need. :)

Kat Hi there,

I'm Kat, 36, originally from Germany, but have been an expat for the last 15 years.

I read classics as a teenager, at the time being completely unaware they were considered classics (for example The Count of Monte Cristo or Uncle Tom's Cabin and so on)

I recently realised that every single one of my non-German friends had to read To Kill a Mockingbird in school, and I had never read it. From there, I decided that there's a whole bunch of classics I should have read at some point, but never did.

Found your group, thought it was fitting :)

Nicole Miles (nicolemillo) Hello! I'm an illustrator from The Bahamas currently working at Hallmark in the UK. I have previously considered myself a 'reluctant reader', but I actually quite enjoy reading....and always have! ....I am just a bit picky sometimes and tend to gravitate towards older books rather than contemporary/YA literature (not that I dislike those genres, I am just more ignorant of them).

Nice to meet you all. I look forward to interesting discussions about the classics...or at least a little character/plot gossip. ;)
