Lolita conversation has already begun (even thought it's scheduled to be a June read), jump in! :)
Jump into Mockingbird as well! I'm currently reading it for the first time, I would love to hear why you hate it! :D (I am absolutely loving it heh)

My name is Adrienne and I'm 25 years old, originally from New Jersey, USA. I caught the travel bug while studying abroad during college, so after I graduated I decided to teach abroad (my degree is in Education so I'm all about teaching, woohoo) and I'm currently living and teaching in a beautiful coastal city in China! Through the thick and thin of culture shock, nothing has been more comforting than entering the world of a good book :).
I'm new to groups on Goodreads, so I'm really excited for a place to discover new books, meet new people, and discuss ideas and opinions. Literature has a fancy way of bringing people together and comforting us in the most desperate of times, so it's wonderful to see people who all share the passion of reading!
Nice to meet you all! :)

Welcome Chao! Nice to have you in the group. You will have to let us know of any classic Chinese novels (translated for me into English) that we should consider reading.

Nice meeting you Kathy. I hate to admit it, but I grew up reading more Western classics than Chinese...My childhood favorites were the Count of Monte Cristo and the Mysterious Island. However, there is one Chinese classic I've read no less than 10 times. It's a 16th Century novel called the Journey to the West by Wu Cheng-En. I think the most popular abridged translation was by Arthur Waley, and the title was changed to Monkey.

Hi, Chao! You and I are opposites because I'm from New Jersey and living in China now! :) Which city are you from? I'm living in Qingdao.

Small world! I'm from Ningbo. How's Qingdao treating you? I'm guessing you are there teaching English? Well have a lot of clams and drink loads of Tsingtao.

Hi Chao! Welcome to the group :).
How fun the coincidence with you and Adrienne! It's like you did a swap of sorts *grin*

I just joined this group the week of April 21st. I have been posing and nominating, seconding nominations etc. After a couple of false starts, I am underway with the group read of W and P.
However, I am just getting around to introducing myself. My reading interests range from light reading such as historical romance, historical fic and the classics. This group seems pretty cool and membership here looks like a fun way to inspire me to read more classics.
Hi Andrea. Yes, I've seen you around. Nice that you got right in! Glad to get to know you a bit better too. Welcome to the group.

Yes, I've enjoyed bumping into you around the threads, too. Wow, feels like you've been here the whole time! I didn't realize you hadn't even introduced yourself yet ^_^. heh. Nice to 'meet' you :D

I just looked up Ningbo, it looks like a beautiful city! I love qingdao so far, the weather has been awesome lately so we go to the beach every weekend :) and yes I'm here teaching English! Where in New Jersey do you live?

早上好!I live in Nutley. Alright here's the deal, next time when are both in the same country, I'll buy you a beer. Coincidences like this don't happen very often.

Haha, agreed! My university was close to Nutley. Such a small world! I'll take you up on that beer offer and we can discuss China and New Jersey :P

Lots of great southern writers! Who wrote "Summons to Memphis" and "The Movie-goer?"
Then of course, Flannery O'Conner, Eudora Welty, and wasn't Fitzgerald from the south? And of course Grisham...always a good read, and so incredibly prolific!

War and Peace and One Hundred Years of Solitude are on my list for this year, but will unfortunately I don't think I can join you on those. However, I will revisit the threads once I get to them!
Hi Susan, glad you joined us in the group. And yes, revisit and comment on threads whenever it works for you.
Welcome!
Welcome!

My name is Kaylani. I am 27 and live in Minnesota. I have a service cat named Sebastian and am currently trying to expand my horizons with books more. I love classics but have so many to read, and most of my other goodreads groups are devoted to young adult fiction so I needed a good classics groups.
Nice to be here! :)
Welcome Kaylani! Glad to have you in the group. Hope this turns out to fun classic group that are looking for.

I love to read classic books and fantasy as well as historical books. I read children's literature frequently due to my roles as mother and teacher. I am pretty easy to please when it comes to literature!

And hello and welcome to you, as well, Pat! I'm in Maine - winter is finally over for us, huh? I wasn't sure it was ever going to end ;-)

And hello and welcome to you, as..."
You are correct! That is a lot of book clubs. :-) I love leading the kids, though. Most of the novels are pretty easy reads since they are for elementary students.

Thanks!

My name's Kate and I live in Germany.
I study English and mathematics for being a teacher.
I love to read English classics (not so much German ones)
I still have some reading to do for my studies, so I'm not sure how much I can read for pleasure at the moment but I would love to take part in the challenges here :)

Absolutely, join us in the challenges!! (my favorite part, can you tell? :p) No worries about joining 'late'. A few people mention that - last year I joined the A-Z challenge in October :D. It's never too late to join.
There's a "Table of Contents" at the top of the Challenge folder. Might make it easier to navigate:

There was a time, when I was younger, I've read many books. But it seems as if getting older (and I am still young), limits your time. So due to several things, I lost the reading vibe. Not that it kept me from thinking about what I wanted to read. It just never happend.
SO, now i'm making it happen. I finished my first book (it wasn't assigned for this month), and i'm looking forward to reading one book a month!

I love reading almost any genre unless it's too dark or has something like zombies in it, but some of my favorites are classics (obviously lol) and sci-fi. When I was a kid I used to swallow books whole, but for many years I haven't been able to read, so now that I finally can again, there's a ton of catching up to do!
The idea of having so many group-reads to choose from each month that are all classics is just amazing and I love the casual vibe this group seems to have - don't want to get stressed reading, just want to have fun while educating myself on literature, and your group seems perfect for that :)
I'm really looking forward to joining in the discussion of '1984' in the new month and others to come!

One book a month sounds perfect, Olivia. Looking forward to seeing you in the book discussions. I totally hear you on time constraints as you get older. That happened to me. I lost the habit in my 30s because of life. Now, it's returned with a vengeance. I can't seem to get enough, it's like I'm making up for the lost decade+ of not reading :).
Aleta, I'm so with you on too dark being pretty much the only genre I can't read. SUCH a wimp, I am! :p Sci fi and classics, along with fantasy and mystery, are my favorite genres too. But, I read them most any of them, it seems like. hm, not so much poetry or short stories, I suppose. Yep, on casual! That's us. Different choices each month, older, newer, and a wildcare or a long one. Threads are always open, read at your own pace. Looking forward to catching you in the 1984 discussion!

I joined, because this seemed a great group and also because MK suggested it for me. I read a bit of everything, because as a librarian you sort of have to, but my favorite genres are fantasy, scifi, classics, comics/graphic novels and non-fiction.
Joining this group I now have more of a motive to read more classics, especially those I haven't still read. I'm currently reading Sherlock Holmes ‒ Kootut kertomukset, which is a Finnish translated collection of all completed Sherlock Holmes short stories and also some stories that Doyle didn't finish. It's a true chunkster with 1306 pages, so it will take me some time to read it :).
I'm also looking forward for all those group reads, though it seems that I've already read all of next months choices, but it doesn't matter.

We have some threads on Sherlock Holmes down in the stacks below. If you'd like, post your thoughts as you read. I'm up to book#4. I'd like to make my way through all of them eventually.

I have been eyeing that edition of Sherlock for a couple of weeks but managed not to buy it when it was on sale. Maybe I'll borrowed it from the library some day.
