Lisa | 3 comments Hello! My name is Lisa. I live in Phoenix, Arizona. I love reading classic books so I thought this might be a good group to try. I have never been a part of a reading group before. I'm reading Sherlock Holmes now. This should be fun!

Akshra Ramky (akshra123) Hi. I'm Akshra from India.I'm joining college this year. I'm new to GoodReads and am really excited to get to know you all better. I've just started reading classics. They've been gathering dust for so long now. They need their share too right? My mom's a librarian so I get to read books for free which is really awesome. The only problem is I can't read them the day they come out.It usually takes the staff a few months to buy books. But all that matters is I get books to read. So I'm happy.

Publius Hi, I'm Lawrence from Toronto, Canada. I noticed that this group is reading Lolita soon, which just happens to be my favourite novel of all-time. I look forward to hearing thoughts of others on Lolita particularly, but other books as well, like To Kill a Mockingbird, which I loathe. Vladimir Nabokov is my favourite novelist of all-time and I've read 15/18 of his novels so far (missing Look at the Harlequins, Invitation to a Beheading and The Original of Laura).

Lolita conversation has already begun (even thought it's scheduled to be a June read), jump in! :)

Jump into Mockingbird as well! I'm currently reading it for the first time, I would love to hear why you hate it! :D (I am absolutely loving it heh)

Adrienne Hey everyone!

My name is Adrienne and I'm 25 years old, originally from New Jersey, USA. I caught the travel bug while studying abroad during college, so after I graduated I decided to teach abroad (my degree is in Education so I'm all about teaching, woohoo) and I'm currently living and teaching in a beautiful coastal city in China! Through the thick and thin of culture shock, nothing has been more comforting than entering the world of a good book :).

I'm new to groups on Goodreads, so I'm really excited for a place to discover new books, meet new people, and discuss ideas and opinions. Literature has a fancy way of bringing people together and comforting us in the most desperate of times, so it's wonderful to see people who all share the passion of reading!

Nice to meet you all! :)

Chaohua | 4 comments Hi everyone. I'm Chao. I'm 26 and I live in New Jersey. I came to this country 5 years ago from China to attend college. I graduated from University of Maryland Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in math. As you may have guessed, English is my second language. But I think my English has improved a great deal since I came here, thanks to a lot of reading. I started reading just for the sake of learning a new language, but now it has become a big part of my life. I can't go any where without a book or my kindle any more. I'm not a literary nerd. I simply would love to read more classics and broaden my horizon.

Welcome Chao! Nice to have you in the group. You will have to let us know of any classic Chinese novels (translated for me into English) that we should consider reading.

Nice meeting you Kathy. I hate to admit it, but I grew up reading more Western classics than Chinese...My childhood favorites were the Count of Monte Cristo and the Mysterious Island. However, there is one Chinese classic I've read no less than 10 times. It's a 16th Century novel called the Journey to the West by Wu Cheng-En. I think the most popular abridged translation was by Arthur Waley, and the title was changed to Monkey.

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1685 comments Hi all,

I just joined this group the week of April 21st. I have been posing and nominating, seconding nominations etc. After a couple of false starts, I am underway with the group read of W and P.

However, I am just getting around to introducing myself. My reading interests range from light reading such as historical romance, historical fic and the classics. This group seems pretty cool and membership here looks like a fun way to inspire me to read more classics.

Lots of great southern writers! Who wrote "Summons to Memphis" and "The Movie-goer?"
Then of course, Flannery O'Conner, Eudora Welty, and wasn't Fitzgerald from the south? And of course Grisham...always a good read, and so incredibly prolific!

Susan from MD | 12 comments Hi everyone, I just joined this group recently so have been catching up on some threads. I've been reading (or re-reading in some cases) quite a few classics over the past couple of years. I read Lolita and 1984 last year - great books both. I read a lot of genres, but don't have a lot of time - I'm a researcher and also do a lot of reading for work.

War and Peace and One Hundred Years of Solitude are on my list for this year, but will unfortunately I don't think I can join you on those. However, I will revisit the threads once I get to them!

I'm just glad it's books I go for. I like seeing what others are reading and enjoy the comments. I am trying to get through the books I have, but keep going to book sales and the library. I am a fifth grade teacher and a mom to three kids. I lead nine book clubs for children and need a bit of adult literature interaction!

I love to read classic books and fantasy as well as historical books. I read children's literature frequently due to my roles as mother and teacher. I am pretty easy to please when it comes to literature!

message 736: by Pat (new)

Pat Hi all. My name is Pat and I'm married, living in Rhode Island and love to garden, crochet and read - the seasons usually dictate which I do more of at any given time. I've been on a mission to read more of the classic books I have acquired (with good intentions of reading them when I bought them years ago!) I've been alternating between classic and more recent books, but at least I've knocked a few classics off the TBR list.

You are correct! That is a lot of book clubs. :-) I love leading the kids, though. Most of the novels are pretty easy reads since they are for elementary students.

message 744: by Olivia (new)

Olivia | 1 comments Hello! My name is Olivia and I study art.
There was a time, when I was younger, I've read many books. But it seems as if getting older (and I am still young), limits your time. So due to several things, I lost the reading vibe. Not that it kept me from thinking about what I wanted to read. It just never happend.

SO, now i'm making it happen. I finished my first book (it wasn't assigned for this month), and i'm looking forward to reading one book a month!

message 745: by Aleta (last edited May 29, 2014 10:16AM) (new)

Aleta Hi there, I'm Aleta :)

I love reading almost any genre unless it's too dark or has something like zombies in it, but some of my favorites are classics (obviously lol) and sci-fi. When I was a kid I used to swallow books whole, but for many years I haven't been able to read, so now that I finally can again, there's a ton of catching up to do!

The idea of having so many group-reads to choose from each month that are all classics is just amazing and I love the casual vibe this group seems to have - don't want to get stressed reading, just want to have fun while educating myself on literature, and your group seems perfect for that :)

I'm really looking forward to joining in the discussion of '1984' in the new month and others to come!

message 746: by MK (new)

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments Hey, Olivia! Hey, Aleta! Welcome to you both :)

One book a month sounds perfect, Olivia. Looking forward to seeing you in the book discussions. I totally hear you on time constraints as you get older. That happened to me. I lost the habit in my 30s because of life. Now, it's returned with a vengeance. I can't seem to get enough, it's like I'm making up for the lost decade+ of not reading :).

Aleta, I'm so with you on too dark being pretty much the only genre I can't read. SUCH a wimp, I am! :p Sci fi and classics, along with fantasy and mystery, are my favorite genres too. But, I read them most any of them, it seems like. hm, not so much poetry or short stories, I suppose. Yep, on casual! That's us. Different choices each month, older, newer, and a wildcare or a long one. Threads are always open, read at your own pace. Looking forward to catching you in the 1984 discussion!

message 747: by Maarit (new)

Maarit | 240 comments Hi, I'm Maarit from Finland.

I joined, because this seemed a great group and also because MK suggested it for me. I read a bit of everything, because as a librarian you sort of have to, but my favorite genres are fantasy, scifi, classics, comics/graphic novels and non-fiction.

Joining this group I now have more of a motive to read more classics, especially those I haven't still read. I'm currently reading Sherlock Holmes ‒ Kootut kertomukset, which is a Finnish translated collection of all completed Sherlock Holmes short stories and also some stories that Doyle didn't finish. It's a true chunkster with 1306 pages, so it will take me some time to read it :).

I'm also looking forward for all those group reads, though it seems that I've already read all of next months choices, but it doesn't matter.

message 748: by MK (new)

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments Yay! Welcome, Maarit :-)

We have some threads on Sherlock Holmes down in the stacks below. If you'd like, post your thoughts as you read. I'm up to book#4. I'd like to make my way through all of them eventually.

I have been eyeing that edition of Sherlock for a couple of weeks but managed not to buy it when it was on sale. Maybe I'll borrowed it from the library some day.

message 750: by Maarit (new)

Maarit | 240 comments Tytti: Yes, we've met IRL and we talked a bit. I've borrowed the book from library, because I think I wanted to see if it was any good before making any decisions about buying it (though I also haven't seen it in any bookstores around here).
