Stephanie (mrsmagnuson) Thank you Doreen! I can imagine the winters up north are much warmer than ours! North Dakota has a certain beauty that many cannot understand, but living here has made my appreciation for life that much greater.

message 502: by Doreen (new)

Doreen Petersen Not really! When you have a temp of -30 without a wind chill factor making it feel like -70 that's pretty darn cold. Fastest I ever moved in my life during those winters! lol

message 503: by Jojolee (new)

Jojolee (simplicityx) Hi everyone! I'm Joanne and I'm currently in my final year of university in New Zealand, studying something (clue: teeth) that has absolutely nothing to do with my love for books. I love travelling, writing, reading, drawing, dancing and watching horror movies.

The reason why I joined this group is to motivate me to catch up with some reading at least one chapter every night before bed despite my tight uni schedule. I enjoy books of all genre - classics can be difficult to get through, but there is an intricate beauty woven into each line that I always find myself drawn to. :)

Lovely to meet you all. Thank you for the warm welcome Kathy!

Jackie Macarthur | 1 comments Kia Ora everyone, my name is Jackie and I'm from New Zealand. I am a stay at home mom with two toddler aged children. I love reading and only found out about goodreads by doing a google search lol. I am also wanting to read a whole lotta classics (and more) which is why I joined this group.

FYI: Kia Ora is hello in Maori which is one of the official languages of New Zealand.

message 507: by John (new)

John (jsalvas) | 2 comments Hi, I'm John, I live in Florida with my wife, two daughters, two dogs, and cat. I am a long time Stephen King fan so my link to the classics has always been through him to authors such as Edgar Allan Poe and H.P. Lovecraft. Three years ago I visited my local library and stumbled upon a little room filled with books for sale with a sign on the door that read "Friends Of The Library". Little did I know that this would open the door to a little room in my heart for the classics. Within three years my classics collection went from a count of 4 to a slightly larger number of 178. Needless to say, I have a lot of reading to do, but I am very much looking forward to it. Some of these are books that I was "forced" to read as a teenager when my maturity level was not at a point to embrace the classics (especially when Stephen King had so much juicy stuff to offer me at the time), but as I've aged I am much more patient and willing to tackle even the most difficult books (many times with a dictionary at my side).

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments How fun! I agree, the books I read in school were horrible .... and somehow those very same books are wonderful, now. :p

oh, I should have said, Hi John! Welcome :)

(edit to add: ps, I love reading older texts on my kindle - built in dictionary function! :) )

message 509: by Cathy (new)

Cathy (whoshake) | 23 comments Hi John

Don't sell Stephen King short! I believe the next century will view him has the "Dickens" of our time, very well written and prolific. "The Girl Who Loves Tom Gordon" can definitely hold its own on my classic book shelves. The academic community (and your teacher) discount him because of his genre and popularity. Plus he tells a "darn" good story!!!

I do not say this lightly --I can be a bit of a "classics snob" myself. As a college student had to buy popular romance novels for my grandmother as a gift. My physical revulsion was so strong that I couldn't do it. I purchased "Madam Bovary" and "Lady Chatterly's Lover" instead. This was a bit of a scandal....despite my protests that the books I was supposed to buy were every bit as ribald and the writing was sherry

I also have figured out that if I read 40-50 books a year, I have less than 2000 books left in my lifetime, a very finite number!!! There is no time to waste on poorly written books!!!

As to "revisiting the bookshelf". I highly recommend Patricia Highsmith, especially the Tom Ripley books (which you should read in order). I also just finished "Rebecca" -- breath taking psychological thriller.

Poe and Lovecraft are some of my favorites!

Enjoy!! Take care, Cathy

Thanks, Ndiritu! I believe Age of Innocence is considered one of Wharton's finest works, and I preferred it to The House of Mirth, which is another great one of hers, but which ends on a much darker note. It's worth a read for sure :)

Shoshi (shoshi13) | 3 comments Hello and good evening: Shoshi here from MN. I am an dedicated reader and also new to goodreads. I hope, that I can blow some dust off the classics! My favorite books are historical nonfiction, thrillers, mysteries, history mysteries, and more.
Tolkien is kind interesting. Do you know, that he took the idea for the LOTR from the Jews? He claimed some of it, from their search for a home, under strangers.

message 520: by Liz_ (last edited Apr 18, 2014 03:20AM) (new)

Liz_ Hi, I'm Liz from the UK and I'm new to goodreads, so I'm still finding my way around. I work long hours as well as studying and being a mum, so reading is one one of my favourite escapes.

I have fairly eclectic taste in books, although I enjoy 18th and 19th century classics particularly, and I adore reading scandalous memoirs! I also like to collect old editions of the classics, so you could say I'm a bit of a bibliophile too.

I recently finished Samuel Richardson's Clarissa, which was a marathon but absolutely worth it. The characterisation, plotting and pacing was wonderful - a fantastic book on so many levels. I'm currently reading Frances Burney's Evelina, which is just gorgeous, sparkling and funny.

Hello to Shoshi and Liz! Welcome to you both :).

Shoshi, no, I did NOT know that about LOTR. Interesting!

Tolkien took influences from many things, Finnish and Kalevala being a couple of them, too.
