The reason why I joined this group is to motivate me to catch up with some reading at least one chapter every night before bed despite my tight uni schedule. I enjoy books of all genre - classics can be difficult to get through, but there is an intricate beauty woven into each line that I always find myself drawn to. :)
Lovely to meet you all. Thank you for the warm welcome Kathy!

FYI: Kia Ora is hello in Maori which is one of the official languages of New Zealand.

oh, I should have said, Hi John! Welcome :)
(edit to add: ps, I love reading older texts on my kindle - built in dictionary function! :) )

Don't sell Stephen King short! I believe the next century will view him has the "Dickens" of our time, very well written and prolific. "The Girl Who Loves Tom Gordon" can definitely hold its own on my classic book shelves. The academic community (and your teacher) discount him because of his genre and popularity. Plus he tells a "darn" good story!!!
I do not say this lightly --I can be a bit of a "classics snob" myself. As a college student had to buy popular romance novels for my grandmother as a gift. My physical revulsion was so strong that I couldn't do it. I purchased "Madam Bovary" and "Lady Chatterly's Lover" instead. This was a bit of a scandal....despite my protests that the books I was supposed to buy were every bit as ribald and the writing was sherry
I also have figured out that if I read 40-50 books a year, I have less than 2000 books left in my lifetime, a very finite number!!! There is no time to waste on poorly written books!!!
As to "revisiting the bookshelf". I highly recommend Patricia Highsmith, especially the Tom Ripley books (which you should read in order). I also just finished "Rebecca" -- breath taking psychological thriller.
Poe and Lovecraft are some of my favorites!
Enjoy!! Take care, Cathy

Hi, Aly! Welcome, you're in good company with that ;-). lol ~
Hi Rebecca! Welcome to you as well :)
HI there. Welcome everyone. What a nice international group of new members. I look forward to reading all your comments.

Welcome to the group. I like the fact that you love Austen, I believe I have read most of her books, and I love them especially Emma. I have not read so much on Edith Wharton, but I b..."
Thanks, Ndiritu! I believe Age of Innocence is considered one of Wharton's finest works, and I preferred it to The House of Mirth, which is another great one of hers, but which ends on a much darker note. It's worth a read for sure :)

If you like Jane Austin, I am going to take a leap of judgment that you also like Bronte and "Jane Eyre". If so, there is a wonderful short novel called "The Wide Sargasso Sea" by Jea..."
Thanks, Cathy! I do like Bronte, and I'll have to check out your suggestions :)

Sounds like interesting stuff. Congrats and good luck on your book launch for your 2nd title!

Tolkien is kind interesting. Do you know, that he took the idea for the LOTR from the Jews? He claimed some of it, from their search for a home, under strangers.

I have fairly eclectic taste in books, although I enjoy 18th and 19th century classics particularly, and I adore reading scandalous memoirs! I also like to collect old editions of the classics, so you could say I'm a bit of a bibliophile too.
I recently finished Samuel Richardson's Clarissa, which was a marathon but absolutely worth it. The characterisation, plotting and pacing was wonderful - a fantastic book on so many levels. I'm currently reading Frances Burney's Evelina, which is just gorgeous, sparkling and funny.

:)) Get ready to welcome more, we are back to being one of the four featured groups :D. So fun, so many new voices!
Hello to Shoshi and Liz! Welcome to you both :).
I joined our classics group right after joining Goodreads, too!
Shoshi, no, I did NOT know that about LOTR. Interesting!

Besides reading I enjoy dancing, embroidery, knitting, crocheting, and hanging out with friends and family.
I look forward to reading a bunch of classics with everyone!

Hello and welcome to Yvonne, Tanya, and Laura!
Looking forward to some fun book discussions with all of you :)

Tolkien took influences from many things, Finnish and Kalevala being a couple of them, too.

i hope to find great and fun readers around here :)

I love mysteries and historical fiction and some science fiction. Love the idea of this group. There are a lot of books I think I should have read, but haven't.

Hi Lynette. Welcome here to our Classics club. What do you like to do with antique tractors? I have friends who collects a few, but they have a lot of property. I live in farming country.

Hi Nyla! Welcome to our group :)
Coding and basketball - you're awesome!

What a fun group of new members we have. And it is nice to see such an international flavor to the group too.
