Please Introduce Yourself

Hi and welcome Kennie! So happy that you've joined us to read the classics! I'm sure you'll enjoy yourself here! Happy reading! 😊

Hello Rosemarie, good to see you here. I see that you’ve just read A House of Pomegranates. I’m reading it now. :)

I've been a long time member of this group but, silly me, I have never introduced myself. Hmmm, where to start...
Well, I currently live in the SLC area of Utah of the USA but I was born and raised in San Jose, CA USA. Married (sorry ladies ;) but I'm a nerdy, ugly, weirdo book-worm anyway) with three kids, a dog, two felines, five chickens and several unwanted mice (hence the rather useless cats).
I'm reaching out to find more like-minded friends of whom appreciate the classics as well because I would like to see more updates on my feed these types of readers too. So if you feel so inclined, please shoot me a Friend Request!
I absolutely love the classics! Why? Well, I guess it depends on how you define a classic but to me it is a book that has withstood the test of time, which is more than we can say for more contemporary literature, although there are plenty of great book there too. See my profile for my more in-depth opinion of the classics. In the past, many books kept coming up that I kept putting off to read, thinking; 'I should read that someday'.
Then one day I thought to myself, why wait!? Life is too short and I've been procrastinating too long! So, ever since I joined GR, I've been making an effort to read more (100+ books a year! -yay me!) with an emphasis on the classics. This year I'm proud to have already finished Dostoevsky's complete works (minus some short works and essays) and I hope to finish the complete works of Dickens before 2018, but right now I'm on a Tolstoy binge that I can't seem to shake!
Look forward to hearing more from you all and reading your insightful thoughts on the classics!

Please to meet you, Rosemarie. Haven't had the pleasure of Zola yet but I'll look him up! Thanks for the suggestion! I was hoping this group can continue to introduce me to more classic authors! Expectation fulfilled already!
As for the Russian authors I must remark that I just love the philosophical musings in these Russian author's work. I constantly find myself contemplating their many themes.

Welcome-love that into. I started here in the same way-trying to read what I had put off for too long. And reading with others and doing challenges has certainly helped.
You have an impressive to read list! Best of luck to you.

Well I do now! I'll make sure to with you a happy birthday next year ;)
Welcome to all of our new members. I was out of town last week without internet. I'm glad to see our group grow with classic readers.

Hi and welcome John to Goodreads and our classical group! I'm sure you'll enjoy yourself here as we read an array of books each month. Something for everyone! Jump in and happy reading! 😊

My names Mercedes and I'm from Texas. I've been trying to be more active on Goodreads and thought that joining a classic book group would be fun. I'm in college so usually really busy with that but love to read (things that aren't for school) in my free time. I love to read all kinds of different classics and am really excited to read at least one of this months book picks. Looking forward to being in this group so much!

John, it's always great to find vegan friends, bookish vegan friends are even better :)

We have lots going on in our group, so dive right in with whatever takes your interest. Happy reading!

Welcome to the group Jane. So glad you have joined us -- another classics aficionado is always welcome. And yes, Audible is definitely allowed! Hope to read with you in November!

Thanks!

Here's a link to what we're reading this month and books chosen for November. The discussion threads are set up on the 1st of each month.

I love to travel and read. I have a great time hanging out with my awesome kiddies. I've started having great times with friends going to comic cons in different states, awesome!!
I'm new to these group discussions so I apologize in advance if I don't do this right but with help from the group I should catch on.
Thank you everyone in advance for your help and patience with me and have fun!

I joined this group a while ago, but I never got involved due to lack of access to the books being read and little to no desire to check out a library book I couldn't keep. I've just figured out that there's an app that allows public domain books to be downloaded directly to your kindle app, so that's been life-altering for me.
I am big into discussion and analysis, and if this says anything, I just graduated with two degrees, one studying Psychology and the other, English. I like science-fiction, fantasy, paranormal/mystery most of all genre fiction, but the deepest pits of amorous book-love in my heart belong to poetry and classic lit.
I'm also a writer, and I would love to participate in a like-minded community. So, here's to hoping I can keep up with you guys and offer something of value to the discussion board! Thanks for having me :)
Welcome to the group Robin and Taylor. Glad that you have joined us and hoping to be reading books with you.

Welcome Taylor! I'm so glad you found the app for reading the old classics for free! I also love that those books are now easily available to read at no cost. If you like audio books, LibriVox is a wonderful free app where you can listen to all the classics (with some pretty decent readers). I have gotten through some pretty long ones on audio that I'm not sure that I could have made myself just sit down and read. So, whatever your preference, sounds like you're on your way to lots of good reading. And I think you'll really enjoy this group. They're pretty active! :)

Taylor, if you prefer ebooks, then Project Gutenberg is great for classics or expired copyrighted materials.

To quote just hit the reply below the comment :) and click the "(some html is ok)" to see additional formatting if you're curious.
Glad to have you and look forward to reading your bookish thoughts.

Yes, they are both available! In fact, I'm planning to listen to The Hunchback of Notre Dame very soon. I've chosen the version read by Mark Nelson, he's a pretty good reader (I usually try to choose the versions read by one reader instead of the LibriVox Volunteers. They're not terrible, but usually each chapter is read by a different person which can be confusing. Also, some of the readers are not proficient English, do not pronounce the words correctly, or have accents that I'm not used to listening to. However, if that's the only version available, I do listen to the volunteers, and I have gotten along with them fairly well in the past.). So, if you're interested in a buddy read, let me know & we can make a loose reading schedule & discuss every once in a while. Just let me know -- Happy listening!

My name is Melissa from Japan. My tastes are fairly wide-ranging, so I'm confident we shall find something in common. I grew up on Fantasy (The Emperor's Soul) and Sci-fi (Ancillary Justice), so those are my comfort reads. But I also enjoy Non-Fiction (The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer), Celtic stories (Daughter of the Forest), Historical Fiction (Kindred), and nostalgic YA (Sabriel) and Children's books (Anne of Green Gables) too.
When it comes to Classics especially, I feel being able to discuss the story and themes with others enriches the experience. I love comic works like Jacques the Fatalist and His Master and Cyrano de Bergerac, but also have an affinity for tragic stories and social critiques. 1984 and Flowers for Algernon were both excellent. There are countless books and authors I have yet to read, so I hope this group will inspire me to pick up some new ones. I'm looking forward to hearing everyone's thoughts in the forums!

I like to fish, read, sew with furs, play with my dogs, and fly planes.
I dont have much of a social community here, so I am reaching out to an online community to discuss books. I like fantasy and fiction, but I am slowly reading more non-fiction. I'm looking forward to talking books! :)
