Hi Sue-Ellen. It great to try something different. Good luck with the book.
I noticed you're a new member. When you have a moment, would you like to introduce yourself in the thread below so everyone can welcome you to the group :)

Glad you enjoyed it Nat. I haven't read any others by her either..

Yes, I think I'm about to reach that conclusion too. Glad I'm not the only one.

I have not read Winton but friends have told me his style is not easy. I'm still going to give Cloudstreet a go.
There are other authors I also don't like who area acclaimed such as Richard Flanagan (although only read The Unknown Terrorist: A Novel which I thought as rubbish), David Malouf (The Conversations at Curlow Creek and a Quarterly Essay neither of which I enjoyed reading) and Peter Goldsworthy (Three Dog Night which I hated and Maestro which was ok).
So either there is something with both of us or not every author appeals to everybody. I think the latter.

Cloudstreet by Tim Winton ..he is definitely one of those authors that you either like, or you don't...I have enjoyed his books, but I know others don't:)

Cloudstreet is not my favourite Winton, Carol even though that is the one people rave about.I couldn't get into it. Loved The Riders and Dirt Music though.

Nothing wrong with you Carol, I find him difficult to read as well. Australia has such a love affair with his writing but not everyone agrees. That's what makes reading so interesting, we all have our own views.

Life's too short to plod on with books you aren't enjoying, when there are so many wonderful ones out there that you would enjoy.

I loved this one too: at one stage it had me doing the reading equilavent of hands in front of the eyes in a scary movie, I just had to shut the book for a while, the suspense was so high. I have managed to pick up 2 more of this author's at charity shops, now in my TBR

My husband just finished it and said I must read it because it is so good. I enjoyed Child 44and The Secret Speech

I have it down for one of my February challenges so I will be reading it soon!

I got half way through Carol and gave up. I thought there was something wrong with me too because I didn't love it and gush over it like everyone else I know. Then I realised there is a divide on this book but a lot of people are afraid to say they don't like it.

I have Cloudstreet down to read in my Aussie Authors challenge in a few months time. Now you are all putting me off :)

LOL Sorry Phrynne. Well at least you wont be going into it with a high expectation. You may be pleasantly surprised.

Don't be put off Phrynne...it's a book that effects people different ways. I personally really liked it, and have read it twice. But I know his style of writing gets some people...it's a personal opinion:)

Oh no - I am committed to giving it a try. That's the point of challenges to me - they make me try new things. No point sticking to the tried and trusted all the time.

It just shows we're all different and often it depends on what else we have read before it or what we are going through at the time as to how we respond to a certain book or author.

Exactly. I may well read it and feel the same way Brenda and many many other people do! I won't find out till later in the year when we get round to the male author in the Aussie author challenge!

Me too! I love to discover another author especially when they have written a number of books.

One thing storms and floods are good for (as long as you are safe)is reading; you can't go anywhere anyway.
I was enjoying this book all the way until the end which I found bitterly disappointing. I also felt that the 'moral dilemma' was talked up a bit too much, while I grant there was a dilemma I think that the moral, ethical stance is glaringly obvious.

Melissa, if you enjoyed Looking for Alibrandi you really must read On the Jellicoe Road. It's brilliant.

It was another of my January reads for male author along with Fontanelle in the Aussie author challengeFontanelle: A Collection Of Poems
Moving on now to February. 2 books The ChildrenThe Children and The Greenfield Legacy by 4 aussie authorsThe Greenfield Legacy

I'm going to start a book which isn't for a challenge, it isn't a NetGalley that I have to read soon...it's a book I've had here and on my TBR for a very long time...it's a book that's an indulgence!!
Never Say Die
by Tess Gerritsen :)

A book by Tess Gerritson is not an indulgence - it is compulsory! She is such a good writer!

Thanks Phrynne, she is awesome!! And I find that I did read this one already, many years ago, but I can't remember the main details, so it's thorough enjoyment once again!!! I'm loving it!

That's why I put it into my challenge - I have to MAKE time then. Forget the cooking and the washing up. Just read!!! That's my theory and I am sticking to it.
