Carol Preston (carolap) | 17 comments I'm reading Cloud Street - Tim Winton. I'm finding it really hard going re the style of writing. I know he wins prizes and is considered one of Australian's best writers. Must be something wrong with my reading.

message 4710: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments Don't worry, Carol - I was the same with Cloudstreet! I think it's the only unfinished book on my bookshelves. When it didn't improve by a quarter of the way through the book, I decided I had better things to do with my time and more interesting books to read!

I have not read Winton but friends have told me his style is not easy. I'm still going to give Cloudstreet a go.

There are other authors I also don't like who area acclaimed such as Richard Flanagan (although only read The Unknown Terrorist: A Novel which I thought as rubbish), David Malouf (The Conversations at Curlow Creek and a Quarterly Essay neither of which I enjoyed reading) and Peter Goldsworthy (Three Dog Night which I hated and Maestro which was ok).

So either there is something with both of us or not every author appeals to everybody. I think the latter.

Cloudstreet is not my favourite Winton, Carol even though that is the one people rave about.I couldn't get into it. Loved The Riders and Dirt Music though.

Nothing wrong with you Carol, I find him difficult to read as well. Australia has such a love affair with his writing but not everyone agrees. That's what makes reading so interesting, we all have our own views.

I loved this one too: at one stage it had me doing the reading equilavent of hands in front of the eyes in a scary movie, I just had to shut the book for a while, the suspense was so high. I have managed to pick up 2 more of this author's at charity shops, now in my TBR

Melissa Crowe I have just finished reading Looking for Alibrandi as part of the summer reading challenge. I got half way through Carol and gave up. I thought there was something wrong with me too because I didn't love it and gush over it like everyone else I know. Then I realised there is a divide on this book but a lot of people are afraid to say they don't like it.

I have Cloudstreet down to read in my Aussie Authors challenge in a few months time. Now you are all putting me off :)

message 4730: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments Well Phrynne, there are still a lot of people who think Cloudstreet is inspired - maybe you'll be one of them. It won't hurt to give it a try and see what you think. If you don't like it, I'm sure you'll be able to find another male author you do like so you can read one of his books that month for your challenge!!

It just shows we're all different and often it depends on what else we have read before it or what we are going through at the time as to how we respond to a certain book or author.

Deb Omnivorous Reader | 1929 comments I just finished a book I had been meaning to read for ages, by an author I had never tried before. My Sister's Keeper

One thing storms and floods are good for (as long as you are safe)is reading; you can't go anywhere anyway.

I was enjoying this book all the way until the end which I found bitterly disappointing. I also felt that the 'moral dilemma' was talked up a bit too much, while I grant there was a dilemma I think that the moral, ethical stance is glaringly obvious.

That's why I put it into my challenge - I have to MAKE time then. Forget the cooking and the washing up. Just read!!! That's my theory and I am sticking to it.
