Graham (giraham) | 60 comments I'm up to book 2 of 1Q84, it's great so far, though I'm struggling to avoid guessing what happens next and just enjoy the surprises as they come

Jacqui (acquija) | 6 comments I just finished reading 'Stella Makes Good', which is Lisa Heidke's new novel which is being released in January 2012. Watch out for it - it's a good light-hearted chic-lit type book.

Although the unravelling mystery was interesting, it wasn't one that drew me into that world. Didn't feel anything about the characters - just names on the page.

I'm currently in the middle of a major fantasy series Malazan by Steven Erikson. I think there are 10 books in the series I'm just about at the end of book 4. It's extraordinarily complex, it's gory with battles, but the characters and partnerships are fantastic. I'm slipping in the occasional book between each one just so I can take a breath.

message 2776: by Kat (new)

Kat (katzombie) Currently I'm reading The Tenth Gift for a November challenge and am running out of time - oh the pressure.

And Desperate Times 2 Gun Control for review but it's really not doing it for me!

message 2777: by [deleted user] (new)

I've been reading three books at once - not a smart move lol - and finally am down to the last one. It's a compilation of Australian short stories that I had to read part of for school. I'm not really a fan of short stories, but some of them are actually really good. What do you guys think of short stories?

message 2778: by Kat (new)

Kat (katzombie) I usually read short stories when I can't concentrate on a whole book - it happens sometimes when I've been reading back-to-back books for days and they all start to blend together - it helps me get my mind back on track for novels.

I also like that with short stories, if you don't like one, you can go to the next one without feeling like you've given up on something you've invested a lot of time in.

message 2779: by [deleted user] (new)

Yeah I totally get that. I just usually like how novels allow more of a character arc. I'm a very big believer in the importance of characters, more so well developed characters.

Kat (katzombie) Shelly wrote: "Yeah I totally get that. I just usually like how novels allow more of a character arc. I'm a very big believer in the importance of characters, more so well developed characters."

Me too, it's the main reason I don't read short stories all that often. But if the story itself gets you in, then I also find that the character development doesn't always matter as much as a full length novel (and even better, if you don't particularly like the character, you aren't stuck with them for a whole book !)

Yeah definitely. A good story is a must as well. That's why, surprisingly to me, I've been going more towards the teen-ish novels lately. They don't have the sex and violence, etc., that the older novels have to rely on to enthral the reader, so they actually have to have a good story and good, entertaining, characters. Same for my movie viewing lately. haha.

message 2783: by [deleted user] (new)

started Shadow's Edge finally...took my time but it finally found its way back to me :)

message 2784: by Kat (new)

Kat (katzombie) I've almost finished Rapture - its by a kiwi author, but I suppose that almost counts ;-)
