It's a good question : do you persist with a book you are not enjoying or give up and start reading something else?

My motto is: there are too many good books out there to continue reading one you're not enjoying. So if it's not "grabbing" you in an entertaining way, put it to one side. Maybe you'll go back to it - maybe you won't:) Just my opinion for what it's worth Time:)

You're quite right Mary. It's a real shame; but I guess we are fortunate in that others have written great works on the same and similar topics. Have you read On Radji Beach by Ian W. Shaw? An absolutely brilliant book - my review if you're interested. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I wholeheartedly agree with your motto Brenda.
Brenda wrote: "MaryG2E wrote: "Brenda wrote: "MaryG2E wrote: "I've been struggling to get through The Daughters of Mars by Thomas Keneally for quite a few days now. One of the most interesting and enjoyable works I've read about the Australian women volunteering overseas in WW1 is a YA novel by Jackie French entitled A Rose for the ANZAC Boys. Beautifully written, immediately accessible for a wide readership, it opened my eyes to the remarkable achievements of some women at the war. Of course, the literary critics would never acknowledge Jackie French in the same way they would valorise Thomas Keneally, but there's no doubt whose book has made the greater impression on me!
I've just picked up my 'book-in-waiting', The Bush by Don Watson. Such a huge contrast to the Keneally pile of doo-doo, Watson's beautifully composed sentences are rolling off the page and into my brain. I rejoice!
I'm reading a non fiction book from Netgalley called The Shift: One Nurse, Twelve Hours, Four Patients' Lives by Theresa Brown. It's written by an oncology nurse who works in a stem cell transplant ward. Very interesting and well written so far.
I'm currently reading (or trying to read) Dirt Music by Tim Winton & it also has no quotation marks for speech. I have to say Why??? it just makes it a bit of a chore to read. I dont like it at all.
I have got a few books on the boil - and they are all really good!!!
The Diva Takes the Cake by Krista Davis - Cosy Mystery
The Gathering by Kelley Armstrong - YA Paranormal
The Rosie Effect by Graeme Simsion - Contemporary Fiction

Cloudstreet didn't have any quotation marks for speech either. I agree, It does feel like a chore, plus I find it hard to really engage with the characters.

I am now reading
, as I have a feeling the film will be out soon, so I want to get it read beforehand.
I'm currently reading Under a Broken Sun it's a doomsday story. I never thought I'd say this but I quite enjoy reading about doomsday survivalists.
Currently reading Dying Light by Stuart MacBride and burst out laughing!
DS Logan McRae has arrived at the morgue at 1am - can't find any (living) people until he finds a young woman in an office; feet propped on the desk, back to the door, reading a Stephen King novel with headphones in. McRae tapped her on the shoulder... her explosive reaction was hilarious even though it was expected!! lol

I love books that mention other books and have people reading in them. Even if it's just a quick mention.
In the book I'm currently reading he mentions three books sitting on a shelf one is Catcher in the Rye, which we've all heard of, the other two I immediately looked up on Goodreads.

Friends keep giving me books and I can;t keep up or read fast enough! At the moment I am just over half-way through
Complicated in theme but easy and enjoyable to read. Dark but joyous. It's going to be one that will be hard work to review!

That's happening to me too. Children's picture books keep popping up in between mysteries and thrillers.

I've just been reading Lost Cause by English turned Aussie author J L Simpson. It's the first of a quirky funny crime series, full of English slang like "git" and "bollocks". Review pending ...

I'm reading my first book by Aussie crime writer Tony Cavanaugh, Promise. Set in Noosa with retired homicide detective, Darian Richards. Enjoying it so far!
Carolyn wrote: "I'm reading my first book by Aussie crime writer Tony Cavanaugh, Promise. Set in Noosa with retired homicide detective, Darian Richards. Enjoying it so far!"I'm starting this soon too, Carolyn - hopefully sometime this month. My only concern is that I'll never look at Noosa and Noosaville in the same way again! How tragic it would be if next time I go up to stay at Noosaville I'm too traumatised to walk around the corner to the yummy gelateria at 8pm to get some gelato!!
I'm kinda finding it hard to get through The Rosie Effect not because I don't enjoy it (I do!) but it's nothing like his first novel which I devoured.I'm also reading A Long Way Home because I've only been able to take The Rosie Effect in little doses. It's pretty cool and partly set in Tasmania too.
I'm currently reading John Birmingham's Dave vs the Monsters trilogy. Specifically Dave vs. the Monsters: Resistance. The second wasn't as good as the first, but I'm hopeful it's a case of middle book syndrome. It's becoming a bit of a guilty pleasure. Quite a way removed from He Died With A Felafel In His Hand!
Currently reading A Man Called Ove which friends here on Goodreads out me onto. Very much enjoying it.

I was the same with The Rosie Effect Liked it, but just didn't compare with The Rosie Project

Did you read them back to back as well?
I just started Sandkings, a novelette written nearly 40 years ago by George R.R. Martin. It won the Hugo and the Nebula.
Carolyn wrote: "I'm reading my first book by Aussie crime writer Tony Cavanaugh, Promise. Set in Noosa with retired homicide detective, Darian Richards. Enjoying it so far!"Oh yes, I want to read the first 3 in this series too, after reading and enjoying Kingdom of the Strong
Marianne wrote: "Carolyn wrote: "I'm reading my first book by Aussie crime writer Tony Cavanaugh, Promise. Set in Noosa with retired homicide detective, Darian Richards. Dead Girl Sing came as a bundle with Promise so I hope to get to it ASAP!

Yes I did, so I think it suffered a bit in comparison maybe
