Maj I had French and German in high school. It was mandatory =.=" And Danish is a Germanic language, just like Dutch. Ergo they're related so it's easier :)

i'm always fascinated by the amalgamation of different languages in a novel. it's so much interesting, plus every writer/author/novelist use different phrases or sentences in their book.it's amazing that you know all these languages, so you can write using different words of these languages and if the plot is captivating, voila! a bestseller!!

how did you learn to speak that many languages? I could never do that ever.

message 8278: by Maj (new) - rated it 3 stars

Maj For starters I am Dutch, so I didn't really have a choice. Secondly, English is taught in secondary school, it's mandatory and you have to pass it (or you flunk it, but then you have to pass both Dutch and Maths). And secondary schools teach French mandatory in year 1-3 and German mandatory in years 2 & 3. But the Danish I learned on an exchange program :)

Wow. All those languages required to learn. I can only speak and read English, and a little spanish, from spanish class.

message 8287: by Maj (new) - rated it 3 stars

Maj The only languages mandatory for all students are Dutch and English.

French, German and Spanish are part of your optional subjects when you get to year 4/5/6

message 8290: by Brooke (new) - rated it 5 stars

Brooke I take German and I love it. Language has never been mandatory in any of the schools I've gone to, though. You usually have a choice between at least two languages, plus of course you have to take English.

message 8291: by Maj (new) - rated it 3 stars

Maj So English is mandatory.....

message 8292: by [deleted user] (new)
