Beauty From Pain (Beauty, #1) by Georgia Cates

Title/Author: Beauty From Pain by Georgia Cates
Date finished: 23rd June
Rating: ★★★★
Review: Easy book to read. I see the similarity in plot line to Fifty Shades, just without the BDSM element (which is good for me seeing as I don't particularly enjoy it). It was also better written IMO though maybe had less addictiveness? Not sure. Either way, it was a good read and I'm going to start the next one since I have it (which I actually thought would be about different characters but it turns out not).

The Immortal Rules (Blood of Eden, #1) by Julie Kagawa

Title/Author: The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa
Date finished: 26th June
Rating: ★★★★1/2
Review: I was pleasantly surprised with this book! The world-building kind of reminded me of 'The Captive' series by Erica Stevens, which I also enjoyed, though that was less YA and more of a romance. I liked Allie, and I liked that she was of Asian descent (but she had no idea!). It was quite long and it did drag in a place or two, but overall a really good read. I have the next book on loan so I will read it pretty soon :)

Review ~ this is a first in the series about triplets that were separated at birth and don't meet until they are in high school. They see monsters where the rest of us see humans.
Gretchen is a loner who has run away from her parents(not sure they are birth parents), Grace has just moved to San Francisco with her loving supportive adoptive parents and her brother Thane, Greer is unaware she was adopted and lives with wealthy parents who frequently leave her alone. For a YA book I enjoyed it - not too much teen angst involved. Looking forward to the next one.

Strong Heroines

Shiver (The Wolves of Mercy Falls, #1) by Maggie Stiefvater by Maggie Stiefvater

Finished: June 27, 13
Rating: 5 stars

Review: I first read shiver back in 2009 when it was first published and remember loving it so much that I just knew I would read it again someday and it's just as fantastic the second time around as it was the first. What I enjoyed most was the dual points of view from both our main characters Grace and Sam. It felt like you really got to know each individual this way. I also really enjoy Maggie Stiefavter's writing style is so fluid and easy to read and she has this great way of pulling you in to the story. This book will be a favorite of mine for a long time to come.

Megan L Harnett Angelfall (Penryn & the End of Days, #1) by Susan Ee

Shelf: Strong Heroines
Finished: 7/1/13
Rating: ★★★☆☆

This story is about an apocalyptic world where angels have destroyed earth and humans are trying their best to survive. Penryn is a girl who has a crazy mother and a cripple sister and is trying to get them to safety. The sister gets taken and her mother takes off when they come across and angel being beaten in the street. The angel Raffe and Penryn start on an adventure in order to get Penryn's sister back.

This book was ok. I listened to it on audio and I didn't really like the narrator so it lost a star for it. I also hated that while in at a crucial point the main character Penryn would start thinking random thoughts for too long and it would interrupt the story. I hope the story gets better in the next book.

Katherine (katdylan) | 34 comments Book: My Life After Now
Author: Jessica Verdi
Shelf: Cover Love
Date Read: 01/07/2013
Rating: ★★★★★
My Life After Now by Jessica Verdi

When this shelf - cover love - was called I was a little apprehensive about it, because good part of it was made by YA, which I don't really like. That much said, I had to choose a book to read. The cover and title of My Life After Now drew my eye at first, so I decided to go along and read it.

Let me start by saying I was completely taken by surprise at how good this book was. I wasn't expecting it to be okay, let alone to be awesome.

Lucy is a 16 years old girl, she's an normal girl, and like any normal person she have problems. When things gets too much she goes out and do something totally out of her character, compromising her own health. One night, one mistake, one disease she'll have to live with for the rest of her life.

Like any normal 16 years old, she's scared out of her mind. It's not easy for a grown up, I can't imagine what it would do to a kid to have been burdened with this kind of thing.

During one sexual encounter without protection, Lucy is infected with HIV, the virus that can lead to AIDS. Lucy falls into a void where all she can think is what the disease is going to do with her. She don't want anyone to know and starts by pushing away the loved ones in her life. But when she finally finds the courage to open up, she discovers that there's hope. She can live a normal life, as normal as a person in her condition can, including meds, meetings, doctor's appointments and a lot more.

This book makes us think: What if it was me? What was I going to do? We ask ourselves all that through Lucy's voice. I really liked her. She's just an simple good student, good friend and daughter. We watch her go through all this with her not so loving mother thrown into the mix, a new boyfriend and so much more in this gripping tale. I wholeheartedly give this a 5 stars rating. It was a great read.

Review: This is the second in the Angels of the Dark series. This is Koldo's story. Koldo is a half fallen angel/ half Nefa soldier who has lost his wings in a most brutal of ways. Nicola is plagued by demons.
“You speak what you believe, and you believe you’re doomed. If there’s one thing I’ve learned throughout the years, it’s that what you believe is the impetus for your entire life.”
Koldo
For me this book took until about 200pgs in to get good. Also it had several other storylines going on as well. Koldo's mom, Koldo's father, Koldo's new partner Axel as well as the trio of the Army of Disgrace that hang together - Thane, Xerxes and Bjorn. Oh I forgot an appearance from William on the Lord of the Underworld. This book is probably setting up multiple other books storylines. Was good but not as good as I expect from this author.

Megan L Harnett Finale (Hush, Hush, #4) by Becca Fitzpatrick /Becca Fitzpatrick
Finished: 7/4/13
Shelf: Angels & Demons
Rating: ★★★★☆

This is the conclusion to the Hush, Hush Series. I have to say that is nice to have a series conclude now and then. In this final battle between falling angels and Nephilem Nora has become the leader of the Black Hand. She together with her fallen angel boyfriend Patch must keep the peace. Loyalties and betrayals are also included.

I liked this book and it was a good conclusion to the story. The only problem I had was I hadn't read this series in awhile so it took me awhile to remember everything about the story. Otherwise a good series!

Undeadly (The Reaper Diaries, #1) by Michele Vail by Michele Vail
Finished: July 5th 2013
Shelf: Cover Love
Rating: 4 stars

Review:
Undeadly was a freshing read and a nice change of pace from all the usual YA books out there. The use of Egyptian mythology was a nice twist from all the vampires and werewolves books out there and made this book fun and interesting to read. I'm looking forward to the next book in there series that will be released later this year.

Delayed Penalty (Crossing the Line, #1) by Shey Stahl

Delayed Penalty talks about a very touchy subject: Rape.
Evan and Ami met under a very strained situation. He's a hocky player, and is going home after a game when he sees someone bleeding in the snow. He knows he's gotta do something or the girl will certainly die. He takes her to a hospital and stays with her during the whole surgery-recovery-coma thing. He's drawn to her, and he don't know why. Ami is not even 18 years old, and living in Chicago less than a month when she's raped and left to die on a cold and snowy alley. When she wakes up, she doesn't remember what happens, which makes it hard to find a suspect.

Ami is soon released from the hospital, and Evan takes her well being as his responsability. Their relationship starts as a friendship, and delves to love. It's very easy between the two of them, however Evan is afraid he won't be able to forget what was done to her, and carry a lot of hatred toward the person who did it.

I really liked this book. I loved the chapters beginning with a hockey jargon. I reallyloved the team. Leo and Remy were too fun! A while ago I read another book with hockey as the sport theme, and it was just awful, because I don't know jack hockey and the book had none reference about the game, the rules or anything else. And in Delayed Penalty, I got to know the game a little more, understand what motivates the players, learn a little about the teams, and the jargons. It was so cool I'm waiting for next season of NHL to watch!! :)

I'm rating it 3.5 stars, mainly because I think it was a tad too long, and some things were a little repetitive. I can't wait to read the next book in this series. Love it!

Leslie/Dyllan I've read Uglies (Uglies, #1) by Scott Westerfeld and the rest of this series a few yrs ago. They were pretty good and quick too.
Leslie have you read Scarlet (Lunar Chronicles, #2) by Marissa Meyer yet? It is on the list

Immortal Rider (Lords of Deliverance, #2 ) by Larissa Ione

I can't say much about Larissa Ione's books, they are so good they leave me speachless. Limos and Arik, I didn't see it coming.
During a party, Arik kisses Limos just to prove she wants him as much as he wants her, and then he's pretty much in hell.
The catch on kissing Limos? She's the bride of Satan... Literally. And the kiss has the power to send her right into her fiance arms.
Arik only needs to say her name while in deep agony. He's tortured and healed, so he can be tortured again.

I started this book when it was released and for some reason just dropped. I know now I was too stupid. I practically ate this book. I couldn't wait for Arik to fall for a paranormal someone, and Limos is just that and then some. I'm not going to do a long review since I have Lethal Rider calling my name! Wait for me, Than!
5 stars!!

Josie | 1967 comments For dystopian shelf:

Inside Out (Insider, #1) by Maria V. Snyder

Title/Author: Inside Out by Maria V. Snyder
Date finished: 7th July
Rating: ★★★1/2
Review: I liked this but it didn't blow me away. I have to say though that I was really surprised by what was "Outside" - I tend not to try to work it out beforehand and just enjoy the twists. I liked how Trella got around in the pipes, but couldn't keep track of all the different sectors and quadrants, B2, H1, who cares? Also, some things worked out a bit conveniently and quickly.

I thought the romance was pretty poor. I didn't feel like I knew Riley at all, no idea what kind of person he was and what they really saw in each other. I would've liked some more dialogue between them. At some points, Riley was mentioned and I was like "who is this person?". That's how inconsequential he was to the story.

However I am interested in the next one but probably won't read it soon.

Week 5: Angels & Demons

Death and the Girl Next Door (Darklight, #1) by Darynda Jones by Darynda Jones

Finished: July 13,13
Rating: 5 stars

Review:
I just loved this book! Darynda Jones has a wonderful way of making the story so easy to fall into, that you almost forget that your reading a book at all. The character's are very likable and funny and they all have a great chemistry that makes all their interactions seem fluid and fun. I'm very much looking forward to continuing this series and seeing what's going to happen to the gang next :)
