Kandice | 4387 comments I do! I haven't read it yet because my children (they're all adults or almost!) are working their way through it first. We all agreed that the MR series got a bit environmentally preachy after book 3, but I still want to see it through to the end.

Have you read it?

Excellent book! Hard to believe it's written by a man."

Agree. Only 40 pages in but liking it so far. :)

Michael Davis I started Dark Tower VI, Song of Susannah today. Then as soon as that one is finished it'll be time for Finders Keepers!

The new one that just came out I have not read yet. I'm going to give it to my daughter as a graduation gift and then will read it. I agree with you about the environmental aspect of it since they went to Antarctica, but the last couple of books were much better than the middle ones. This is a series that my whole family has enjoyed as well.

Radiant Angel by Nelson Demille is avaialble for download today so I'm reading that. I'm thinking about diving into the Child 44 trilogy before Finders Keepers comes out.

message 2956: by [deleted user] (new)

I finished Radiant Angel and was kinda underwhelmed. The Zero Hour had a similar premise - a bomb in lower Manhattan - and it was a much better novel.

And now I'm going to start The Girl on the Train. I really hesitated with this one because the responses seem so polarized. But I finally gave in to curiosity.

Girl on the train: You have to stay with it :æ: - I think the very final part of the story makes it all worthwhile, even though the first part is off putting.

Jeff (thelongwait) | 293 comments Here's what I'm working on
The Recognitions by Gaddis
A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Eggers
Giles Goat-Boy by Barth
A Naked Singularity by Sergio De La Pava
Thank You for Smoking by Buckley

Sorry about no links as I'm on my phone. Feel free to comment away.

E. | 242 comments I remember looking up Giles goat-boy after one of your updates. In between all of the five-stars were two "acks", one "wtf" and a couple of "this author is stupid"s.
How are you liking it?

I had the exact opposite feeling as Nick. I loved the beginning and narrative style, but felt the ending was a bit of a cop-out. Still an amazing book, I mean look at King's endings, so I hope you like it :ae.

message 2965: by Johanna (new)

Johanna | 9 comments I am currently reading The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. It's a horror classic! Have any of you checked out the Penguin Horror Series with the brilliant Guillermo del Toro as editor? It's a series of classic horror stories that are selected by him as "favorites" and feature really cool cover art. I'm a sucker for neat horror collectables, especially in gothic style, so I bought a few.

I loved it, and it's eerie how prescient King was. There was NO reality t.v. when he wrote it.

Actually you're right. the beginning was good, and the ending, it was the middle that made me want to throw the book under that train. BTW the audio book was very good if only for the distinct voices of the women who read the narrative.

WILL DO!! Not sure of the order of the read... I guess it may have to do with the turbulence on the way. (hey... there's a name of a stephen king book... TURBULENCE.)

E. | 242 comments I'm contemplating "reading" audiobook of The Stand. I read it when it first came out in the late 70's. It has always stuck with me, but lately all these strange coincidences have brought it up in my mind- pointed me to it. Conversations, song lyrics, a billboard, another book I'm reading, an email... it's kinda spooky. I'm now a little obsessed, and I don't think it'll stop until I actually do it.

I've read it a couple of times (both versions) and have been thinking of a re-read as well.

message 2976: by E. (new)

E. | 242 comments Let me know if you decide to in the near future. Maybe we could discuss as we go along - there's a Stand thread around here somewhere...
I have not read the Dark Tower series so reference to that may be lost on me. However, it might inspire me to pick those up.

Dune is such an immersive read. I loved the rest of the series written by Frank, but not the installments written by his son.

Yeah, I'd only read Frank's sequels as well. I have zero interest in a million prequels and interquels.

I actually liked Insomnia. It was a little long-winded, but I thought the premise and the characters were interesting.

Also finished and reviewed THAT'S WHAT WOMEN DO, A Feminist Manifesto. My review is posted at https://www.goodreads.com/review/show....
What's a nice guy like me doing reading a feminist manifesto? Check out my review and see for yourself, either on goodreads or the shorter version on amazon.
