I hope you end up liking Desperation! It has some great characters in it! I liked it more the second time I read it.

I hope so too, but right now I'm more and more committed to Infinite Jest, So, it's going to be interesting to see how I make it through the remaining 700 pages. I really like the audio book, it's a great great reading. Meanwhile, whispersync doesn't seem to work with e-books and audible so I have to recalibrate my position every time I start reading or listening. We'll see. But thanks for the good wishes about Desperation, should have read it last year while we were driving across Nevada on our way to Yellowstone.

Nick Iuppa | 4272 comments Infinite Jest: 400 pages in... I like the audio book so much I'm sitting here in the dark at night listening to it rather than reading it, even though I have the e-book... and the paperback. Much slower this way, but damn entertaining. And of course the narrator knows exactly how to pronounce those 9,000,000 conflicting, heretofore unheard of acronyms. (Yikes... I'm starting to write in the guys rhythm too.)

If I remember correctly, there were almost 100 pages of footnotes in the hardback edition.. does the narrator say "footnote" or something? And some of those footnotes are long digressions, entire stories.

The narrator is a man. A woman's voice comes in and just states the number of the footnote. Right now I'm skipping the footnotes and concentrating on the story.

Okay... you're right (LongWait) the footnotes in Infinite Jest DO add a lot. Of course, I can't look them up while driving... but I can after and they are spread out enough so that it isn't a problem.

The movie is nothing like the book! I'm in a movie/book club at the local library and was thrilled when we chose this. Then I watched the movie and was mortified! I loved this book, but invariably we have a few members who only get around to the movie and if they do that this month they will have the wrong idea.

Radcliff is a great actor, but the material he was given here is nothing like the book. Here's my review:

I just preordered Radiant Angel by Nelson DeMille (it will download May 26). I've never read this author but it seems like something I will enjoy.

message 2839: by E. (new)

E. | 242 comments I really like DeMille and his John Corey character. "Plum Island" was Corey #1 and a great introduction to the character. He's kind of a smart ass and it makes for some great dialogue. Your book is #7 in the series, and I don't know what back story might be missed, but no matter what, the story and writing is probably going to be a fun read.

message 2840: by [deleted user] (new)

I just started The Black Jewels Trilogy, not a good one to pick up right before finals. I don't want to do anything but read!

Scott | 401 comments Last week I finished The Name of the Wind. It was a great book. I will be reading the next one soon.

Now I am reading Predator One.

message 2844: by Nick (new)

Nick Iuppa | 4272 comments Someone gave me a copy of a book called THE SHADOW OF THE WIND. Thought they might be related (shadow of the wind and name of the wind). Across the top of the book it says "One Gorgeous Read," Stephen King. I'll have to check it out. Anyone know anything about it? Has it been up on the group read list?

Currently I'm entirely under the sway of INFINITE JEST. It's the only thing I'm reading. I'm over 600 pages and 200 footnotes into it. It's amazingly funny, gripping, addictive... but also full of maddeningly slow digressions that eventually turn into amazing and important scenes. Only problem is that I can't read anything else.

message 2845: by Nick (new)

Nick Iuppa | 4272 comments John wrote: "The Shadow of the Wind is excellent. I did not enjoy Infinite Jest at all."

Thanks John. I'm hooked on Infinite Jest. though I have to admit that I'm listening to the audio book (even at night when I'm not driving around. The guy who reads it does a great job. Some of the scenes are amazing.

Doctor Sleep reminded me of Infinite Jest because there's so much about Alcoholics Anonymous in those novels. So I got the kindle edition of the AA "Big Book" - one more book for my burgeoning TBR.
