Edgy Christian Fiction Lovers discussion
New members: just an introduction...
Hi fellow readers/writers,
It's a pleasure to find Goodreads and talk books! I'm an author of historical fiction - my first book will be released August 1st - The Frontiersman's Daughter by Revell/Baker. There are 5 copies up for a giveaway on this site.
I'm a happy wife, mom of 2 boys, ages 9 and 12, and currently live in Washington State but go home to Kentucky as often as I can. I feel blessed beyond measure to write books and think one of God's greatest gifts is the written word.
All my best,
Laura

Welcome!

Just curious as to what you consider edgy Christian fiction. I wrote a book called, THE RELUCTANT JOURNEY OF DAVID CONNORS, which I think is edgy in that it's not typical Christian material, but not sure that qualifies.
Don wrote: "I've read Anne Lamott, and love her stuff, and certainly consider her to be edgy."
Lindsey wrote: "I've never read after her I will have to check her out Thanks!:)"
Is Anne Lamott a Christian fiction writer? I don't think she is. That was the original question, right? I write Edgy Christian fiction and so do a lot of other authors. I post reviews and mention the books I think are edgy in my reviews. That site is www.edgyinspirationalauthor.blogspot.com and the other place where edgy Christian fiction lovers participate is http://edgychristianfictionlovers.nin... so if you paste either of these in your URL address bar you can find more edgy Christian fiction books. :) Promise.

For edgy romance, Lindsey, you can try (besides me...even my buddy Julie Lessman thinks my stories are hot) there is also Denise Hunter, Jamie Carie, and Lisa Samson.

My publisher is the same as Michelle's for her Tombstone Treasure series, Danger at the Door and In Plain Sight. If you're looking for something good to read, MIchelle's newest book, In Plain Sight, is absolutely wonderful!

I'm Renee (aka SteelerGirl) and I've been a fan of fiction since before I could read! I read Clifford and Amelia Bedilia when I was little, in 4th and 5th grade I got started on Goosebumps, The Babysitters Club, and the Sweet Valley High books! I didn't start reading Christian fiction till I was in Middle School but once I got started there was no stopping me!
Some of my favorite "edgy" authors off of the top of my head are Deeanne Gist, Julie Lessman, and Michelle Sutton. I'm sure there are many others but it's almost midnight and my brain is starting to protest. If you want to see some of my favorite authors I have a list @ my blog http://steelergirl83.blogspot.com
I like my blog and think you might like it too if you like to read about books, cats and dogs, and ocassionally sports and cars (yeah I'm a huge Steelers and Ford Mustang fan)!
Well that's about all I can think of for now! If I think of something else you need to know about me I'll be back :-P

It is reviewed both on Goodreads and Barnes and Noble.com and the first two chapters are available on my website: stefnemillercom.
Please check it out!
I look forward to being a part of this group and finding great new books to read!

Sweet! I put my name in for the drawing for this book so if I win I will review it and see what you mean.

I'll send you an email.

I'm happy to have found you! I'm a voracious reader and an author. I'm also always on the look-out for well-written, edgy Christian fiction. I'm sure you've all discovered, this is a tougher quest than one might think!
If you're in the market for a new book, my fifth novel, Operation Bonnet, hit stores in February. It was a hoot to write. :) If you're so inclined, you can read the first chapter here: http://kimberlystuart.com/buy-books.html

I am a pastor and have recently released an edgy Christian novel called Every Bush Is Burning. It's a gritty story about forgiveness, satisfaction, and the sins of the church.

Nice to meet thos of you I don't.

I just published the first, Vengeance Is Mine, through Smashwords, Amazon, B&N, etc. Here are the links and a description. Glad to see I'm not the only one that likes a dose of realism with their reading.

Emily O’Brien is slowly putting the pieces of her life back together after her husband, a state trooper, is killed during a traffic stop. But six months after his death, she finds an envelope behind his desk that sends her searching for answers about a case he was secretly working when he died. Soon she’s convinced his death was no random act of violence; it may have been necessary to quiet his investigation into the deaths of six drug runners.
Drawing on her years working the crime beat for a major Chicago newspaper, Emily begins asking questions about Alex’s death. Her inquiries take her from a tornado-ravaged community searching for a way to recover to a wealthy and powerful family with political aspirations and connections. As the dots begin to connect, it becomes evident that the same people who killed Alex are beginning to target her as well, forcing Emily to seek protection from some very unlikely sources.
As she draws closer to the truth, Emily must face the rage driving her toward vengeance, a rage that is just as dangerous to her soul as the threats against her life.

Hi Lindsey,
I was just reading your posts and could totally relate to what you're saying. After being frustrated with Christian romance for years, I finally just wrote a Christian romance that had characters that seemed real to me, ones that might actually *gasp* sin! But I also wanted to use those opportunities to show God's amazing mercy and redemption. I've had a hard time finding a genre this would fit into, which was why I was so excited to find groups on Goodreads that like edgy fiction. I'll be checking out the authors you suggested, and I'd love to get any more suggestions if you have them for Christian romances that push the envelope of conventional Christian fiction.

I still feel pretty new to whole Goodreads world, but it's been so incredible to find other readers and authors who enjoy edgy Christian fiction. I can't wait to get know all of you and get recommendations for more authors and stories.
I recently released my first novel, Love's Providence, and I'm now swimming the shark-infested waters of marketing. I thought dealing with rejection from those in the "traditional" world of publishing was bad enough, but it doesn't get any easier when you decide to venture out on your own. I've been trying to reach out to bloggers, and I've gotten some good responses, but I've also found that quite a few bloggers do not review self-pubbed titles. I guess I understand; I've read quite a few of these that make me cringe, but I'm wondering if there's a way to break through that, at least for myself. I believe in what I'm writing, and I love the independence that comes with self-publishing, but the down side is dealing with the stereo-type that if you self-publish, your work must be sub-par.
I'd love anyone else's thoughts...agree or disagree. I'd also love more friends, so feel free to send me a request!
Happy reading!

Melissa, you might want to join the main Edgy Christian Fiction Lovers group on Ning. Michelle Sutton who started this group here is the owner/director of ECFL on Ning. You can put up an author page there, join a miriad of smaller groups, get in on marketing opportunities.

Lianne, What do you mean between the sexes?
It sounds as if it would fit into edgy Christian fiction.

This is heartwrenching edgy Christian fiction.
It fits right in here, perfectly.

My book is about Revolutionaries in a post-apocalyptic world. They're trying to upgrade their settler cell to a nation, but their humanity keeps getting in the way.
Here's the text from the back cover. I'm here on Goodreads if anyone wants more info.
Jessiqua Wittman

Marna…
The year is 2143 C.E.
The place is an insignificant settler cell in the Damascus region. Consumed with unrest and divided by indecision, it is the perfect battlefield for the spiritual forces of a post-apocalyptic world.
The original inhabitants of this land were descendants of the ancient Hadadian kings of Damascus, but after the second Great War ended, the refugees from the destroyed population centers nearby decided to call this area their new home. The Hadadians fell easily to their following conquest. They were already weak from religious skirmishes within themselves, and the covetous refugees were far more advanced technologically.
That was all sixty years ago. This year, 2143, our year, is the period everything is going to change for the forgotten kingdom. We, the multicultural grandchildren of that history, are ripe for a social Revolution. Our Settler’s Senate Council have proved themselves incompetent as leaders time and time again, and now war is looming with our European neighbor, Charn. Our last hope is to elect a Hadadian king to take the reins of our riotous people and rule like a man again.
A Memoir of Love

This is a great idea for a group - it perfecly fits my interests. I write contemporary and historical Christian fiction, as well as speculative fic, and some of my work is definately 'edgy'. I'm actually working on a first-century story that supposes that St. Mark the Evangelist encounters a group of Mithraic cultists when attempting to bring the Good News to Egypt.
I hope to find some kindred spirits here and get turned on to some new works and authors.
I appreciate the opportunity to mention that I have a new Christian-themed collection of flash fiction available and I'd welcome any comments or critiques of it. It is called 'Flashes of Inspiration: Brief Tales of Faith & Spirituality' and can be found on Amazon here:
http://www.amazon.com/Flashes-Inspira...
It is my hope that while not necessarily providing answers, my stories are asking the right questions. And perhaps the reader will experience their own 'flash of inspiration'.
Thanks so much for letting me share this with you and I look forward to getting to know everyone soon.
God bless.

My name is Rose Dee, and I am an Australian fiction Author writing Edgy Christian/Inspirational Romance/Suspense. I have a three book series - the Resolution series, published by a small press here in Australia that came out over the last three years. Despite winning two national awards for my writing, I have struggled to find an audience. I know this is because my stories do not fall into the traditional Christian market. I've been so excited to find this group celebrating edgy fiction.
I am looking for reviewers for my new indie release, Ehvah After. It is only available on Kindle. Please message me if you are interested in a copy for review.
I'm really looking forward to this genre gaining momentum. It's time. :-)
Blessings to you all. Thank you for including me in the group. It's very encouraging.
xo Rose.
