Donitello Speaking to this, I've always wanted to ask: How do you Europeans keep so relatively slim? Is is ALL about the car/bicycle ratio, or...?

During my year in China, I learned (to my great distress) that my colleagues' main meals consisted of rice and vegetables. I myself dropped a WHACK of weight in China. Is that the secret?

TELL, DAMMIT.

message 52: by [deleted user] (new)

Tambo, could you possibly post an avatar of yourself smiling close up? Thank you.

Why, exactly? Are you going to make me something? Will it be as glorious as THIS?!

I'll definitely post a close-up, later, just in case.

How about this one?

Duder, you're putting way too much pressure on me. I am to represent all the Europeans now? And the Chinese maybe?

But to answer your question: Yes, there are some dietary and life-style differences - duh... The truth is, people are putting on weight over here as well (so I've noticed).

Matthieu Americans are just so fucking fat that everyone else seems slim in comparison. Lots o' obesity in London/England.

Kasia Montambo wrote: "How about this one?"

And your teeth? Seeing your teeth was the whole point!! Cheater.

That's harsh. (Although some of the specimens are impressive)

And Doni, for you, Hungry Planet: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClvLhN... (stuff people eat on daily basis in different countries)

message 59: by Kasia (new)

Kasia "Lots o' obesity in London/England. "

yeah.

message 60: by Malbadeen (new)

Malbadeen Kasia, if by "feisty" you mean "sexy-as-hell" I agree whole heartedly!

message 61: by Donitello (last edited Apr 20, 2009 02:18PM) (new)

Donitello Tambo, I was talking about the TEETH, a fact I'm sure you understood very well, you obstreperous cow. Hence, your avatar would be even more glorious if it looked like THIS: [image error]
A dear friend of mine fosters orphaned wild animals. This one has grown to adulthood and is apparently trying to sell a used car to us all. (See the smile?)

Could you possibly stir your stumps to post a rivalling image? Thank you.

Kasia Marie wrote: "Kasia, if by "feisty" you mean "sexy-as-hell" I agree whole heartedly!"

Bending my words... But, hell! I'm in a good mood so yes, what I really, really meant was "sexy-as-hell Marie" (in black and white, so it's official, and from now on whenever you see "feisty" you can assume I meant to say "sexy").

message 63: by [deleted user] (last edited Apr 20, 2009 02:50PM) (new)

I missed that part about the teeth. I thought the teeth part was about Kasia. I didn't know why you wanted it, but I'll go fetch you one, Doni, you obstreperous cow.

message 64: by Donitello (new)

Donitello HA! See, that's what I was talking about! Was that so hard??

message 65: by [deleted user] (last edited Apr 20, 2009 03:07PM) (new)

Well? What now? There are my infuratingly straight and gapless teeth. Do I pass? Do I win something?

I still don't understand this thread.

message 66: by Donitello (new)

Donitello Kasia wrote: "Yes, there are some dietary and life-style differences - duh... "

Take your 'duh' and cram it, Virtue Girl -- I want to know EXACTLY WHAT the differences are.

Just to inform you, I've been to your side of the pond, and know how SOME of you Euro-volk live. Yes, your dietary lifestyle is different. But by God, I've also been served sausage and cheese and bread for BREAKFAST in quite a number of your countries, so don't play with me. We Americans breakfast on CHEERIOS over here, did you know that? Have you had Cheerios? It's like cardboard in milk. Meanwhile, I ate like a QUEEN in China and dropped 20 pounds. Come to that, my European friends gained weight the SECOND they returned home from China -- yet they're STILL not as fat as many of the people I see here in the US. So if you have something to say besides "Duh," please come forth. Otherwise... Well, don't make me visit Warsaw, because, dammit, I will.

message 67: by Donitello (new)

Donitello Tambo: Clink on the link in message #11.

(Golly, I've realized my dream! I'm BUNNY!!!)

message 68: by Lori (new)

Lori Hahaha the one of Bun is purrrrrfect. Yes, I had to do that, sorry.

So is the one of KD!

But I think my favorite one is Doni's, brilliant.

Kasia, how you managed to nail them all is genius.

AHEM - except mine. wtf indeed!

message 69: by Donitello (last edited Apr 20, 2009 03:44PM) (new)

Donitello Yes, Kasia has a definite gift for finding the perfect visual for whatever topic is at hand. I have to suspect it's not her only talent by a long shot. But that's probably a subject for another day, since it may now be past her bedtime in Warsaw. Night-night, K. Don't think I'll forget the "Duh" comment....

Excellent teeth, by the way, Tambo. No one can ever take that from you.

Kasia Doni wrote: "I want to know EXACTLY WHAT the differences are."

1. Cheerios for breakfeast is not a good idea. Any cereal, unless it's just plain oats is not a good idea. There's nothing but sugar in it and the advertised extra-fiber (added during processing) is not worth much.

2. We eat way less processed food (though that's changing). In my family, every weekend, we'd have pizza... But I make that from scratch - dough and all.

3. Soda (pop/coke/however you call that liquid candy shit)!!!! I don't drink it, ever. (Ok, maybe like 4-5 times a year, during some parites, whatever). And fruit juices are not that much better...

4. Polish bread is different (heavier and more dense, whole wheat, best is based on rye), only a few countries have breads like we do (I know Germany does, but not France). The toast bread you have over in US - total crap - bleached flower. Whenever I leave Poland bread is what I miss the most.

5. I hardly ever eat out (I used to do that for a while and it didn't agree with me - think: weightgain). You don't know what you're eating while eating in restaurants. That stuff is prepared to taste good, not to make you fit and healthy... And, in general, you guys eatout way more often than we do.

6. Takeouts - just forget it! You're at home, make your own food, lazy ass! A cold sandwitch is gonna be better for you than Chinese. (That's a different lifestyle for you there)

7. Fast food is a treat (for me), like once every couple of months or so. And I haven't been to McDonalds in years.

8. If you do eat in restaurants, the portion sizes are smaller. And you pay for every single drink - no free refills. And calories from drinks count, believe me.

9. Just a matter of different cuisine - we eat quark, buckwheat (and other kasza), smoked fish, marinated fish, our soups are not as thick as yours, I wouldn't put a dressing other than olive oil, herbs and optional viniger / lemon juice on my salad... People don't know what smores are over here, or clone syroup, or brownies (though we do have some other really nasty pastries).

10. We eat way less corn and beef (that stuff is just too cheap in US). Beef is not all that popular because of mad-cow but also traditionally, pork is more common, and so is poultry. We use mostly rapeseed/canola oil (it's cheap here, popular and relatively healthy) and wheatflour instead of corn (I don't think the last one matters).

11. I stay away from the "diet" stuff - one big scam. Then non-fat stuff has usually more sugar than regular stuff. The low carb - eighter more fat, or whole bunch of potentially toxic chemicals. So why eat it?

12. All those lattes... Switch to unsweatened tea (only Brits consume more tea than Poles in Europe). Coffee by itself is ok, even with milk it's fine, adding more than that will get you into trouble...

13. We have probiotics in our diet on daily basis. They help you digest. Think: kefir, sourkraut, pickles, youghurt...

14. Fresh fruit instead of chips.

15. I could go on, but I'm gonna stop here.

Besides we walk more (think NY - you have to walk to that subway - that's a little of exercise that makes a difference)

Lori Kasia, grumble grumble. (In reality, I'm thrilled to bits just to be included!)

Doni - that raccoon pic may become my next AV.

And that is also why USA is 21 ranks below Poland when it comes to suicide per year… sugar, makes us happy =) and then we too lazy to freaking shoot ourselves in the head =)

message 83: by Donitello (last edited Apr 21, 2009 08:18AM) (new)

Donitello Kasia, thank you for all your hard work in that answer. I certainly DO owe you. I may not pay, though. You should have worked out the details with me before you started the project. Live and learn.

You know, I think portion size is a bigger problem than people here realize. Our cook in China (we had a cook, WHEEEEEE!!!) would make us these lovely meals, which would be in serving dishes the size of side plates. Literally. When we first saw the portions, we thought, "Mmm! Appetizers!" When we realized they were the main course, it was embarrassing. Oh dear. What fat American pig-dogs we are....

message 84: by Kasia (new)

Kasia Doni wrote: "I certainly DO owe you. I may not pay, though..."

Don't worry about it, somewhere over here there was a list floating around how much I owe to whom... Do you see me stressing about it? And it's not like I said anything enlightening, it's all old news...

Doni wrote: "What fat American pig-dogs we are.... "

Don't sell yourself short Doni, it's not that bad... So you have bigger portion sizes, no biggie.

Reads with Scotch Doni, your such a round eye... pfft.

message 87: by Kasia (last edited Apr 22, 2009 03:00AM) (new)

Kasia round-eye --------> it is rude and don't say it to oriental people, they'll kill you.

"hey man can i have some yummies??"
"no food for you round-eye!"
"you suck"

message 97: by Kasia (new)

Kasia It's Korean innuendo I wasn't getting at first either. Apparently, my nose sticks out (possibly chin does too). I was informed that Koreans and Taiwanese have less dramatic profiles: 2D - as opposed to my 3D. Get it?
