J A few of us Bookaholics have been discussing how many unread books we have on our Kindle/Nook machines and if we need any help in figuring out what to read first. I put this discussion in the Fifty Shades book category since I think most of us started this book reading disease because of these books.

I'll start: I have just counted 61 unread books on my Kindle carousel. The oldest are: Sometimes Never, Mogul, Groupie, Rock Star, Ruining You and Finding Never. What should I read and get off my carousel first?

Martine LOL I have the same problem!! But I have about 190 books that I have not read yet (including the 100 free classics I got when I bought my kobo). I'm reading the Fifty shades trilogy right now, and I'm planning on reading the Sylvia Day books after. I just read what I feel like reading when I browse through my library... There are so many interesting books out there! And so little time to read them!!! (Let's not feel guilty though, cos it's such a positive hobby!)

J Martine:

I can't believe how many books I have on my Want to Read thread also! Sometimes I just want to yell STOP! to my friends listing books on the Updates page. But, of course, I don't want them to really stop, I'm the only one who can stop it and I have no interest in doing so. (P.S. - I loved both 50 Shades and Crossfire).

message 4: by Wanda (last edited May 15, 2013 08:32AM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Wanda I'm going to count mine tonight. Not all of mine are in the same genre / realm of 50 Shades, but I know several of them are.

As I said in our other thread, I habitually download free or inexpensive books because they look good at the time. Most times, when I am in need of something a little different to cleanse my palatte in between books of this genre, I look through my unread books and realize I don't remember what half of them are about!!

Jamie Young-Lewis 1550 want to read and 2000 on my Kindle that I haven't read. I have a HUGE problem! :) The Kindle books are for when I retire and don't have immediate access to a library or book store. If I don't have a book waiting for when I finish I get anxious.

Wanda Wow! That's a lot of books!! I think I have just over 1100 on my TBR list here on Goodreads. It's an even bigger problem when you switch genres ALOT and aren't really picky about subject matter as long as it's entertaining and well written.

Jamie Young-Lewis Yep, that's my problem! I will ready just about anything, if it's interesting and well written. I only get Kindle books that have 5 stars. I get the free list everyday and that has proved to be a problem. :) There are worse addictions!

Shannon I only have about 8-10 books. I try to read most of my unread books on my kindle before buying any more. However, I have a huge wish list on Amazon and every day I go on it to check what books have a price drop on them and if it's a good drop then I buy it. Of course there are some books I have to get as soon as they are released, like the newest Crossfire book that will be out in 3 weeks!! Every time I add a new book to my goodreads list then I go to Amazon and add it to my wish list there too!

Heather I have 2500 + sitting in my cloud, on my Kindle 2 (that I stopped using when I got used to the difference in reading on the iPad screen), and on my iPad, somewhere around there, 12 more added since yesterday that I'm doing for reviews that have to be read first.

Other than the reviews, my fave authors get pushed to the top too whenever they have a new release.

A little overwhelming when I look at the numbers. I've stopped downloading free books unless there are 4 stars at least or it has no reviews yet and it really intrigues me.

message 10: by J (new) - rated it 4 stars

J Heather:

I feel like such a liteweight. Here I thought 61 was some ungodly number of unread books (and I think I have 120 plus on my To Reads).

I usually only buy books (recommended on Goodreads and then purchased at Amazon) that are rated at least 4 stars. Because of that I have to not really like a book to rate it at less than 4 stars, knowing that I personally probably wouldn't buy it. And, I still do actually read the reviews. I'm a HEA kind of girl and I hate triangles and sad endings (and vampires and werewolfs) so I do try to be somewhat selective and occasionally get a less than 4 star (especially if some kink is involved that I might like to take a stab at).

How did you get a list of 5 star books? I have only been active on Goodreads for a few months and I don't know all the ins and outs about it yet.

Jamie Young-Lewis I signed up on Facebook for Pixel of Ink and they send me emails twice a day with free books. I also signed up with KEBooks.com. They give you a list of 25 - 30 free books and they rate them. That is where I get the five star books. That is why I have so many books on my kindle.

message 12: by Gen (new) - rated it 3 stars

Gen I have a nook I don't use, so instead I'll answer the question using my ipad as the device. I have over 800 books that I haven't read as of yet, which makes iBooks run a bit slow. But since I've been knocking out my books for my 2013 reading challenge, I've been able to delete about 50 or so books (I've kept the ones I plan to revisit on my device).

do you not read your kindle books on your ipad via the app?

message 14: by J (new) - rated it 4 stars

J Jamie:

I've mentioned on some other threads, I purchase a hard copy of the books I REALLY like! I figure someday something will happen and we will all be in survival mode and might not have electricity and therefore our Kindle's won't work. I must have the books I love with me at all times.

My recent hard copy purchases have included Going Home, Liberating Lacey and Emancipating Andie (and I'd have The Tied Man if it was published). Of course, I also have all the standards -- Fifty Shades, Crossfire, The Edge of Never, Redhead, Wallbanger, Gabriel, On the Island, Easy, Crush, all of Julie James' books, etc. etc. etc. But, I have a long way to go to get up to your standards.

Jamie Young-Lewis Oh, I also have over 200 books in my workroom/library. I also think that someday we will not be able to get books. Probably have read too many stories where that has happened! lol I'm like a crack addict. I don't read my books in the basement because I need to know that I always have a book at the ready. I get them at library sales and garage sales. Last year I read 150 books. I upped my goal this year. I also have the Kindle app on my smartphone, just in case. I get the shakes if I don't read everyday. My husband says it's my obession.

I KNOW! I'll never get through my to-read list!!!

Martine It's comforting to discuss with other reading addicts! ;)

That's why I started this thread. I felt like I might be alone in the world with my reading obsession. It's so nice to know there are a lot of us out there.

message 21: by J (new) - rated it 4 stars

J Megan: Your ONE begs the question of what is the only book you have unread on your Kindle. For you to have that amount of discipline in the midst of we bookaholics, it must be something great!

Victoria Shannon wrote: " However, I have a huge wish list on Amazon and every day I go on it to check what books have..."

Shannon - keeping a wishlist on Amazon and updating it each time you add a new TBR is a terrific idea and one I hadn't thought of before. Thank you so much, this is exactly what I'm going to do.

Ugh, I'm grateful for this thread also. I'm so obsessed with reading and with my kindle.

I liked to read as a kid, then didn't for a long time. Then along came FSOG (I didn't even know what it was until I saw the skit on SNL and googled it) Although I didn't think they were the best books ever, they sure did whet my appetite for reading. The Gabriel books were next, and I've been a fiend ever since. God knows how much money I've spent, although I do tend to be picky about spending, and my husband is far happier to indulge my reading vice than for me to spend hours on facebook, which is what I used to do.

To answer the question, I counted and I have about 20 unread books. It could be worse, but I read so darn much. I'm grateful to know there are others like me.

Megan It's Beautifully Damaged by L.A. Fiore.
The reason I only have one book is because I am too stubborn and cheap to have a book and not finish it to waste my money. lol. That book however I cannot get into the author can just have my 2.99 and not have me read it.

Now I do have many more unread novels but it in my to-read pile! There is just only one that I picked up and said forget it lol. Let me clear THAT up!

message 24: by J (new) - rated it 4 stars

J Thanks Megan. I just looked up Beautifully Damaged and liked what I saw and added it to my To Read list. But seeing one of my "friends" really liked it (Martha) I'll probably just go ahead and buy it and add it to my unreads. Thank you so much for another addition to my Kindle (I'm being sarcastic!).

Heather I do use the kindle app on my iPad, but when I had my kindle 2, I've had it for years, I downloaded a lot of PDFs that were available for free that I still want to read, romances, mysteries, anything with fairies or vampires... Plus, I don't know where all my free ones I've gotten from amazon over the years are. They are on my kindle, but not in my app. I should look in my account on the computer because when I synced them to my kindle, I had to read them but they got pushed to the side for review books. I need to stop bookmarking the top free contemporary romance page, it's my downfall, but I just found a new fave author the other day because a book she had up there for free. I read 2 books today but only got the dishes and one load of laundry done. LOL

I used to have the same problem with paper books. I finally started requesting PDFs for reviews and only buying the ebooks I wanted. I had no storage left. Thank goodness for ebooks. :) I remember one vacation as a kid, we drove to Alabama (my parents and 3 siblings), my parents were complaining about not having enough room for luggage and flipped when they found I had brought 2 paper bags stuffed full of books and magazines. What was I supposed to do? Not read? I could go without my brothers having a change of clothes but not having tons of books with me was unthinkable. :)

Janine Last I generally only use my Kindle while I'm on holiday and I currently have about 600 books on it to read, but I'm going away for nine weeks soon, so should cut that down a bit. I try to be selective about my reading - so many books, so little time - and don't usually bother with books that have less than 3.5/5 ratings online.

Kendra I have 53 (Kobo) 229 (Kindle) and 244 (nook) a lot of them are free, but I have 425 on my TBR list.

message 28: by J (new) - rated it 4 stars

J Wow, you guys just amaze me with your Kindle use and I don't feel nearly as crazy as I did before this thread.

I was wondering myself if I will ever get to a limit on my Kindle. I have deleted a few books I knew I would never read again but I still have over 250 books in storage and 70+ on my carousel (I bought 3 more last night, I hope I live to over 100 so I can finish all these books!).

Kendra: You are amazing!! Kobo, Kindle & Nook -- all of them. You are the proud recipient of the READING DEVICE ACADEMY AWARD!.

Heather Judy, I know at one point I had at least 2200 on my kindle 2. My girls have Kindle fires (not HD) but I haven't tested it's limit for them. I bet you can get lots more on yours. LOL

Thanks Judy, I just let a co worker read your reply, and she says that she is in total agreement with you.

Pokwita more than a hundred!!!!

Karen I have so many, I don't even know where to start. I get them, planning on starting right away, but then.....there are always more that I want, so they get pushed back. Right now I have 1244 books on my Nook. This does not include the books I have in my Kindle library that I haven't converted!! I have ADD in real life, so that transfers to my book hoarding. I'll buy books that I really want, with the sincere intent to read them then.....SQUIRREL!!.....oohhhh...free books!!!

So, here are the books that I've actually paid good money for, I feel I need to read first.
Vain (The Seven Deadly Series #1) by Fisher Amelie
Down and Dirty (Dare Me, #2) by Christine Bell
The Lonely by Tara Brown
Fighting Faith by Brandie Buckwine
Beauty From Pain (Beauty, #1) by Georgia Cates (Read there was a cliffhanger so waiting on second book, I think.)
Stolen by Lucy Christopher (I think this has a sad ending. I HATE sad endings. Does it?? Does anybody know??)
Bound Together (Bound Together, #1) by Marie Coulson
Strangers by Barbara Elsborg
Immortal Protector (The Immortals, #1) by Elizabeth Finn (I LOVE Elizabeth Finn, but I don't love paranormal that much.....so putting off. I need someone to say...READ THIS!!! It is so good, your life will be better if you just read this!)
Star-Crossed (Battered Hearts, #2) by Kele Moon
Curio (Curio, #1) by Cara McKenna
Rock My Bed (Black Falcon, #2) by Michelle A. Valentine
Dark Passion (Dark Brother, #1) by Bec Botefuhr
The Love Game (The Game, #1) by Emma Hart
Breathing His Air by Debra Kayn JUST bought this. Why, you ask, when I have so many others??? It was reduced to .99 cents, and it's about a hot guy on a motorcycle WITH tattoos, that's why. What if it goes up to 3.99 or something??? Then I would have to wait to buy it, until I actually had time to read it. Can't have that. That would make sense. :p
Damaged (Damaged, #1) by H.M. Ward (First in a Series. If I really like it, I'll have to buy the others, so not sure this is a good idea to get started. So why, I ask you, did I buy the first one????....Huh?....Why???)
Never Forget (Memories, #1) by Emma Hart (Another 1st in a series. What is wrong with me???)

Rant: Can I just say, that I am getting annoyed with all the Series books coming out. For crying out loud, someone write a whole complete book with no cliffhanger, or continuation. Those of us with no self control need a break.....geez!!!! From now on I'm not buying anymore series books until the whole series is out. Then I can buy the whole series, read it and be done with it. As it stands now, I read the first book, then obsess about the next one until it comes out, or I read the first one, get the second one, don't have time to read it, so then it sits there staring at me, wondering, and questioning why I haven't read it. Didn't I like the first one? Do I think I won't like this one?? It taunts me and makes me feel guilty, but I know there is a third book, so if I read it, then I'll be stuck obsessing until IT comes out. AAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!! OK, rant over.

OK, That's all I'm putting out there for now. I have to be a responsible adult and get to work on responsible adult stuff. (RATS!!!) Sadly, this is only the tip of the iceberg.

Jamie Young-Lewis OMG Karen! You make me laugh. You sound just like me. I haven't read any of these books so now I have more on my to-read list! Thanks! I also have an author I say I'll never read another book, and yet every time she comes out with a new book, I read it!

I agree with you about the series. If it's a long series, 7 or more books, like an Evonovich, then I'm okay with it. But three books, all about the same thing, and then you have to wait so long for the next in the series, not good.

Megan, I wasn't a fan of
Beautifully Damaged by L.A. Fiore at first either. I really wanted to be, I thought it would be like Beautiful Disaster (Beautiful, #1) by Jamie McGuire but I just couldn't get into it. I started, and put it down once or twice. Try to get through the first half. It gets MUCH better in the second half. The author seems to get it together as she goes on.

I want you to finish this, just for the pure fact that I think you are my hero for having so much stinking self control. I know what it means, but I just can't seem to grasp the concept, and apply it to my own life. So.....try reading it again!!!!! Woohoo!!! I'm rooting for you!!!!

message 36: by J (new) - rated it 4 stars

J Karen:

I love you. I hate cliffhangers also! Hate that every book I seem to read has another one coming out "later". But then I read that first book anyway and just can't wait until I get the second, or third, etc. I preorder at Amazon when available. I CAN'T STOP!

Your rant above is so funny, it feels you are channeling my thoughts exactly but just being wittier and more insightful than I could ever be.

AND I HATE SAD ENDINGS ALSO!! I think we need a box in the review area for books: WARNING THIS BOOK DOESN'T HAVE AN HEA. If checked, I won't read it.

Karen Jamie wrote: "OMG Karen! You make me laugh. You sound just like me. I haven't read any of these books so now I have more on my to-read list! Thanks! I also have an author I say I'll never read another ..."

Jamie-

I'm so glad to know I'm not the only one. There is an author I love too that has a book out right now that I haven't bought yet, because it isn't the complete story of this character. The continuation of this is months away!!! I can handle series books that are about different characters you have been introduced to in previous books. One that is pretty recent is The Rocker That Holds Me (The Rocker, #1) by Terri Anne Browning and The Rocker That Savors Me (The Rocker, #2) by Terri Anne Browning . They are a series, but each one is the complete story about a different member of a band. (I really loved them by the way. SORRY!!!!! Scratch that.....don't mean to add more to your list!!!) Or with The Tied Man (The Tied Man, #1) by Tabitha McGowan it was the complete story, but the next book is about the next step in their life, NOT the answer to a cliffhanger!!! (I hate cliffhangers) There are too many 50-100 page books that leave you hanging until the next installment. Makes me grouchy. :(

Judy- I remember things better if I have a picture. I can remember what I've read the book is about if I can see the cover. If you want to add a cover when you post, click on the "add book/cover" link, that is right over the comment box when you are typing. You can look up by author or book title. Make sure you click for the book cover, not the link, which is at the bottom of the pop up.

I wish
The Tied Man (The Tied Man, #1) by Tabitha McGowan came in print too. I would buy it so I could have a hard copy of it, along with the digital one I have. Hopefully someday. Kristen Ashley started with all of hers digital, and now they are coming out in print. I'm going to have to buy them because I love her books. She is one I buy and read immediately!!! Hers ALWAYS jump to the top of my TBR list!!

OK, seriously, I've got to get busy. Have a great day!! So glad you started this thread!!

M. Keep I collect books like I collect steam games. The second you get rid of the storage limitations, I apparently become a hoarder.

Arlene Wow! I thought I was bad with approximately 6 or 7 unread books on my kindle. After reading this thread, I feel much better!! My problem is I tend to read ahead in my books and then get bored with it. I also tend to check out new releases and when I purchase one, I want to read it right away and I don't finish the one I am reading!

message 43: by J (new) - rated it 4 stars

J JM - Okay, I'll bite. What's a steam game?

Arlene: I agree that when I see a new book I would like to read it usually gets read before the other 60 or so older books. And, of course, there is ALWAYS a newer book that looks interesting. Can't wait when new, interesting books dry up and I can get to the others waiting patiently to be read.

message 44: by F.B. (new) - added it

F.B. I think I have a good 20+ on my to read list. I buy them because they sound good, but I was already reading a series adn wanted to finish that before I started anything new. This seems to be a constant trend with me, I have to finish the series before starting anything. When I've finally finished I've either lost interest or forgotten about the book I've previously bought.

message 45: by J (last edited May 17, 2013 03:15PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

J Amazon had two free books yesterday. Add two more to my unread carousel. And, a book I was waiting for, "Dangerous to Know & Love" just got released so, of course, I bought it.

Please read The Lonely by Tara Brown ! I don't think you'll be disappointed. I truly enjoyed that book, it had everything a book should have...mystery, suspense, romance, great characters, dark twists, and a happyish ending!

Lorinda Cockrell I think I have about eight of them I haven't read yet!! I still keep buying them!!!

I've started two new books (M. Leighton's "Until I Break" and Jane Harvey Berwick's "Dangerous to Know & Love"). Both rated highly, but I just can't get into them and stopped reading both just part way in. I've never done that before. Maybe this will help with my book affliction!!
