jaxnsmom | 8341 comments That's right, it's almost Toppler time! This Toppler is one week long, and will either be June 1st through 8th, or June 8th through 15th. I'll let you know this week, but in the meantime, feel free to share your opinion :)

The theme will be Childhood Summer Memories. Is this bringing up any memories of summer camp and family road trips?

This is going to be a lighthearted competition, with a few adjustments to account for longer books and faster readers :D I'm hoping to have three teams, and am looking for three team captains. Anyone interested please PM me. Post a message here if you plan on participating. The magic fruit machine will assign participants to teams.

More info to come this week...

June Toppler – SUMMER CAMP

The Summer Camp Toppler is one week long, and will start on June 8th at noon EST and end at noon EST on June 15th. Points will accumulate for your team, and there will be various badges available to each team, with a main badge for the winning team. There may or may not be some individual badges :)

A few rules:
1. Books must be started and finished in this time period to qualify for points.

2. You may read any format - paperback, hardcover, ebook, or audiobook. For the last two use the page numbers on the first edition that comes up on the GR page.

3. A minimum of 175 pages must be read to earn points. There will be no combining of books to meet 175 pages. Each book must be at least 175 pages.

4. Books can only be used for one task in the Toppler, but can count toward the monthly challenge, the group theme read, and the alphabet yearly challenge if they qualify.

5. You may plan ahead and chose books for the challenge, but you are not restricted to those books. You may swap them out at will.

6. You can do as many different tasks as you want, or do the same task as often as you want.

7. There will be one discussion thread for everyone, and a reporting thread for each group.

8. All tasks are worth 10 points, unless otherwise stated.

There is no requirement to read a certain number of books, even if you only read one, you will earn points for your team! And the teams want members: fast readers, slow readers, people who read for hours on end, people who listen in the car – if you read, WE WANT YOU!

Tasks:

Did you go to summer camp? Did you love it, or were you homesick? Were you shy, or a troublemaker? Tell us about your best camp memory, your worst, and your funniest. Didn’t go to summer camp? How about a family road trip?

There are certain activities that are commonly associated with summer camp, and hopefully bring back fond memories.

Arts and Crafts – Read a book and do an art project or make a craft from it. Cooking a dish counts, but the recipe doesn’t have to be in a cookbook. Picture must be posted for ten extra points!

Talent Show – Read about a singer, dancer, or musician (fiction or nonfiction). Make a short video of yourself singing, dancing, or playing an instrument, and post it for fifteen extra points.

Movie Night – Read a book that was made into a movie. Pick a scene and tell how it will be/has been ruined in the movie, in decent detail for 10 extra points.

The Big Dance – Whether it was just your camp, or combined camps, this was always a highlight. I met a boyfriend there, oh to be young and silly and think you’re in love... Read a book about young love.

Campfire Stories – Read a scary book. Make it scarier by reading part of it under the covers with a flashlight.

Camp Nicknames – What was yours? Read a book written under a pen name. Be sure and tell us the author’s real name. OR Read a book where the character is using an alias, or going by a nickname (not derived from their real name).

What other fun activities did we have at camp?

Did you ever catch fireflies? Read a fantasy.

There were team oriented activities - round-robin songs were always popular. You’ll need 3 cabin mates for this. The 3 will read the same book and discuss it. A great way to read the June Group Read, or another book of your choosing. You will set up a separate topic for your discussion, and copy it to the Group Reads folder if qualifies. Yes, this counts as ten points for each person, or 30 points total.

Besides memories, you may have kept a diary, and possibly you sent post cards to family. Read a book that’s in a diary, letter, journal, or similar format.

Ever been on a fun-filled road trip family vacation? Fighting with siblings, being yelled at by parents, ahh, what fond memories. Sometimes you don’t even remember where you were, just the wonderful quality time with family!

Fighting for your share of the back seat without having to touch your brothers and sisters? Read a book that has siblings fighting.

The most common phrase on a long car trip - Are we there yet??? Read a book about a long journey.

Did you ever play the license plate game? Read a book set in a place you’ve never been, but would like to visit on vacation.

Was your vacation (or camp) at a mountain or beach setting? Read a book located in the opposite setting.

Theme park or historical sights? Read a YA book OR history or historical fiction.

The Biggie! It’s a Scavenger Hunt!
Spend the week being on the lookout for these items. Be creative! Take a picture, upload it to photobucket (use my June Toppler album if you don’t want to create an account -
(http://s1152.photobucket.com/user/jax... - and from there you can post the pictures in topics I will set up for each camp. This is not a race, take your time! I don't want each camp assigning items to people. I want everyone getting pics of all items they can. I'll be setting up threads for each camp to post their pictures in. I hope this makes sense – let me know if there are any questions. Ok, the items:

Umbrella
Heart, any color but red
Flashlight or lantern
Tent or sleeping bag
Campfire, or wood or gas fireplace fire
Cocktail
Yellow piece of fruit
Strange roadside sign/billboard
Canoe, kayak or sailboat
Stars
Body of water
Bird
Post office or UPS truck
Statue
Interesting piece of architecture
Dessert
Flower in bloom
Restaurant menu
Flagpole
Underwear you wouldn’t be caught dead in
Something you see every day
Mailbox
Library

In order to recognize the longer books being read, there will be extra points for those extra pages:
225 – 325 pages – 1 extra point
326 – 425 pages – 2 extra points
426 or more – 4 extra points

Arts and Crafts, and Movie Night have been edited- change is in italics.

Counselors, name your camp, set up a topic, and pick a co-counselor if you want one. Your topic thread will be used for general conversation, and planning your strategy. Another topic will be set up later for reporting.

message 23: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments Participation looks great so far! But I still need Camp Counselors (team captains).
camp counselor photo: Camp Counselor camper.jpg

Duties aren't hard - and can even be fun. They include -
- choosing a camp name
- after teams are assigned, choosing a camp co-counselor (it was agreed that having two made it easier, one to set up thread and links, and one to be the main morale counselor)
- set up a reporting thread and decide what reporting format works best for them (I'll help with format)

If prior captains think of anything else, please let me know :)

message 24: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments Oh, I forgot to mention a couple of things. Being a counselor doesn't mean you have to be online the whole time, nor do you have to read a lot of books. Whatever time you have is fine, and it doesn't matter if you read one book or a dozen :D

Hooray for Helen! She's graciously volunteered to be a counselor!

If there aren't any other volunteers, all team members will be responsible for the counselor duties.

All right! I'm in then. :)

message 36: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments Josee wrote: "I'll have to pass on this one - June is shaping up to be extra busy :)"

I understand if you're too busy, but if you plan on reading just one book that week, you'd be a welcome addition to a camp. Gotta keep the Summer Camp theme going :)

message 37: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments It looks like we've got enough participants for three camps! I'll assign people to a camp starting the 18th, so counselors can pick a co-counselor and start talking to their campers. People are still welcome after that, and I'll assign them to a camp as they join.

AmyK has volunteered (with a little help) to be a counselor. And I'm thinking I'll volunteer myself. If anyone else wants to volunteer, let me know.

I'll start posting the challenges during the week of the 20th. That will give everyone plenty of time for spreadsheets, making lists, and anything else involved in their planning.

message 38: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments Kimberly wrote: "Not sure if I'll be participating yet so count me as a "maybe"."

I hope your maybe turns into a yes! Remember, all it takes is one book! That goes for the rest of you too!

Sarah | 18550 comments jaxnsmom wrote: "The Toppler will be the second week of June, the 8th through the 15th."

I'll be on holiday then but I will still get some books read on the plane etc. So do I get extra points for being on my Summer holiday while doing the Summer Toppler? ;-)

message 40: by Jkmays (new)

Jkmays I'll join in...the 24 hr ones don't work for me, but in a week I should be able to do some designated reading.

To bad random number generators are not open to bribery.

What is she telling us? That we can't be co-counsellors together unless the fruit machine says so? Or is she saying that we have no say in who gets to bunk in our cabin?

J'Mom, what are you saying?
