Here is a five star character driven mystery by Patricia MacDonald. If you like Harlan Coben, then you should like The Girl Next Door.

I finished The Dead in Their Vaulted Arches by Alan Bradley. In this 6th book in the series 12-year-old Flavia de Luce and her family are at the train station awaiting the return of her long missing mother when a mysterious man gives Flavia a message for her father. Soon the man is dead, his body lying under the train. Thus begins a Flavia de Luce novel that is more of an espionage story than a murder mystery. Nevertheless, Flavia is up to her usual tricks, cooking up exotic chemical experiments and mounting her own investigations. I was a little annoyed by Flavia's continuing arrogance and (often-expressed) high opinion of herself and I found the convoluted espionage tale slightly confusing. But it's an okay light read.

Just finished The Vivero Letter by Desmond Bagley. It's an adventure thriller very much of its time (1968), and suffers from a notable lack of thrills or adventure until the last third of the story. Readers seeking their daily top-up of 1960s British male heroics may be better served by going straight to Alistair MacLean. Two stars.

I like both Bagley and MacLean, but agree Bagley has a lower-key approach to his 'thrillers'. My personal favorite Bagley adventures are High Citadel and Landslide

I love this series, and the character Flavia de Luce, but I must agree that this latest book in the series disappointed me on several levels.

Savannah is wonderful, except in the summer. I was there two summers ago, and the heat index was 127. That was just miserable. Since then, I wait until after October to go.

I finished Strangers on a Train by Patricia Highsmith. Guy Haines is on a train to Texas to see his estranged wife Miriam to discuss their divorce when Charles Bruno sits down opposite him. Haines talks about Miriam and Bruno talks about his hatred for his father. Before long Bruno suggests that the two men should "exchange murders": Bruno should kill Miriam and Haines should kill Bruno's dad. Haines refuses to participate but Bruno tracks Miriam down and murders her. He then proceeds to stalk Haines - pressuring him to 'carry out his part of the plan'. To say any more would be a spoiler. I enjoyed the book and Alfred Hitchcock made it into an excellent film as well.

I enjoyed this story as well. I've read a couple of her stories now and generally enjoyed.

Excellent book & movie both. Just finished reading 'The Tremor of Forgery' by PH. Meh... not bad, but not one of my favourites of hers.

I've been there in the past, I think it was early summer and loved it, I don't mind heat and humidity, also spent time in SC, both are beautiful.

I just finished a sci-fi novel, The Spider and the Fly by C.E. Stalbaum. Now I am reading a Scotland Yard Murder Squad mystery, The Yard by Alex Grecian. I have read another book in that series and loved it.

If you like Gillian Flynn, you might try Devils' Cradle by Darcy Daniel.

I finished The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson yesterday. It was a good book. I felt terrible for what happened to Lisbeth. I wanted to harm the man! I loved how the book twisted and turned.

I just finished The Lincoln Lawyer and it was Amazing! I loved it so much. It started out a little bit slow at first, but once it was a a couple of chapters in, I was Hooked. Now I am on the read the second in the series!

I think The Tightrope Men of Desmond Bagley is one of his better ones.

I like the series, too, but have had real trouble getting into this story. I'm fifty pages in and am just not motivated to finish. It may be because Eisler went back in time to introduce to a young John Rain. I don't find the character nearly as interesting at this point.

I finished Journal 64 (The Purity of Vengeance) by Jussi Adler-Olsen. Farm girl Nete Hermansen lost her mother at a young age, and growing up among her father and brothers, learned to curse and exhibit her body - which shocked teachers and townsfolk. After two early pregnancies Nete was sent to Sprogo Island by evil Dr. Curt Wad, a eugenicist determined to rid Denmark of 'inferior people'. Sprogo Island housed girls considered to be mentally defective or sexually promiscuous, and the girls were often sterilized. Years later - after Nete was happily married - a chance meeting with Dr. Wad upturned her life once again. Meanwhile, in the present, Copenhagen police Department Q is looking into a series of decades-old disappearances. The investigations reveal that the disappearances have ties both to Dr. Curt Wad, who now heads a political party poised to institute eugenics in Denmark, and to Nete Hermansen, now an elderly lady living alone. The story switches back and forth between past and present and engages the reader in every scene. The characters are well written and varied: some funny, some earnest, some evil creeps you'd gladly throttle. Not too many twists and surprises but a very good book. Highly recommended

Glad to know more about this book! I just finished The Keeper of Lost Causes which I think is the first book in this series. I enjoyed the characters, and I was surprised that the main character is not an alcoholic! I've read a number of Scandinavian authors and alcoholism and kinky sex seem to be constants. This one had a kidnapped victim going through horrendous conditions and what I would consider torture. I found those parts hard to listen to. The audiobook was great for learning the pronunciations of the names and locations. I will definitely read more of Adler-Olsen's Department Q series.

I just finished . Don't bother reading this book if you have issues with grammar and punctuation. This book had so many lies in it that I eventually didn't care who did what. I just finished it for the sake of doing it.

I'm now starting my first Harlan Coben book Shelter.
