I just started The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America. I've heard about it though and, truth stranger than fiction, it's hard to imagine anyone coming up with a fictional character like this murderer.

I'm starting April with 3 new books; The Long Run: A New York City Firefighter's Triumphant Comeback from Crash Victim to Elite Athlete by Matt Long; The House of Silk: A Sherlock Holmes Novel by Anthony Horowitz; and Endangered Species by Nevada Barr.

Now there's a great book. I read it years ago and it still comes to mind every so often.

Hello,I just finished "Guests On Earth" by Lee Smith - great book! I went to listen to Lee Smith talk last night at the 2014 Henrico Reads Book Award. She is just as vibrant as her characters in the book! What a crowd there was! Guess a lot of other people in Richmond Va enjoyed this too! I would highly recommend it and rate it as a #4 Star in Fiction!

Nancy, can't stop thinking of The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America. I read it maybe 5or6 years ago. It scared me. Consequently I vasilate from not liking it to realizing it is a very well written book. Is our lives better for knowing the truth??!!!

I think it's how you approach it, Georgia, as is true with any book. With this book, my degrees are all in history, so I appreciated the historical aspects presented in and around the story of Holmes. So in that sense, the information increases my knowledge of American history, so that makes my life better. As far as the Holmes part of the story, well, frankly, I like to know what makes people like that tick -- again, purely a personal motivation -- and so yes, I suppose that satisfies my curiosity. Knowing things does make my life better -- even if they are unpleasant.

Thanks!

Since so many of you had recommended it I went to B&N and bought "The Winter People" I am now on page 73 and you were right! The author is very talented in creating a "suspenseful storyline". I like her characters and the way the starts the story in the early 1900's to present day in the same surroundings and small town in Vermont.

It's a club read and one member suggested pictorials. Google came up with some great images for the Chicago Fair - what an event!

In George Plimpton's biography Truman Capote: In Which Various Friends, Enemies, Acquaintences and Detractors Recall His Turbulent Career Plimpton mentions Capote's relationship with the killers, how he got to know them, especially Perry Smith. That is incredible too!

The history; the crimes; the amazing feat that was the building and operation of the World's Fair and yes, the evil that could slither undetected as all this wonder was taking place! I read this in a group and the photos of the Fair and the city at that time really added to my enjoyment of this book!
I just finished PD James Cover Her Face. It was a good mystery. Very British and a bit slow-moving, but an enjoyable puzzle to solve.Just starting The Cuckoo's Callingby Robert Galbraith. I'm only about 50 pages in, but I like the characters and the story has pulled me in. I was skeptical when I knew it was JR Rowlings which is probably why she used a pseudonym!
Not sure where to put this, but the NYT Book Review has an interesting article on new mystery and crime novels. The new Donna Leon Commisario Brunetti By Its Coveris based on a true crime involving the theft of rare books and government corruption. http://nyti.ms/1dYiURQThere are a couple of other new offerings mentioned as well.
I enjoy the Leon series! Looove Guido Brunetti!

Hope that clears up which one I am reading! :>)
I just finished the second Frankenstein book called City of Night. It was pretty good and I'm anxious to read the third one, since it's a continuation of the second book. There are five books in this series and I would call it one long book divided into 5 parts. Now I'm reading the second Fox and O'Hare book called The Chase by Janet Evanovich and Lee Goldberg (the Monk series.) It's starting out better than the first one did.

Who but Chandler would mention a tough guy in a powder blue suit? Or the jacarandas blooming (Little Sister). He's fantastic. Wonderful book, wonderful writer.

I read this book last week. It was a good book.
Just finished Untraceable by Laura Griffin. Not sure why it's a series called Tracers since the characters are different in each book. Seems to me they are stand alone books.
Below is my review.

I just finished Shooting To Kill by Susan Schreyer. It's a multi-layered story that I really enjoyed.. will post a review later today.

Great review! Can't wait to read!
Just started and gave up on "Jakarta Pandemi" by"Steven Konkoly"
.Maybe it's a good book, but it's the 1st one I read that is being written in "present tense".
I mean how can you read a book with sentences like "Alex heads toward the closet" or "What's going on ? says Kate".
All the books I was reading till now were allays in Past Tense. After page 50 I just gave up. Couldn't continue with it.

I haven't read anything of Patricia Cornwell's yet but I am anxious to do so! I keep reading a bunch of negative reviews about her writing though so although I will still test it out for myself, it concerns me. Do you feel that her writing has started to slack Maddy?
I love her books but I think her books have got a little slower not bad , when you read a series continuously without a break it will become slow . I read a lot of different types of books but will always love p Cornwell , as I value my opinion to so trust yours and try her books xx

"This is one of my favorite series. Have most of the books on my bookshelf and do re-read fairly often. I was much more impressed by the books after I lived in KY for several years ... the characters often seemed a bit unreal to me before I lived in the south myself. Since I moved, I've *met* many of Maron's characters personally.

Waiting for Wednesday by
Nicci French"I really like the in-depth descriptions of London in this series.
Some good reading this month. I enjoy crime fiction set in small towns and have been reading two that are first in a series. I recently finished
by Linda Rodriguez and the next book is definitely on my to-get list.I'm now reading
by Terry Shames, featuring a retired former chief of police. He considers the current police chief inept, so when a friend is murdered he decides to investigate the crime himself. I am enjoying it so far and will have to get the next book.

I have read a lot of Patricia Conwell's books but I got tired of the character and have moved on to other authors.
