I was born on Rabbie Burns' day in the small industrial town of Kilmarnock, in the West of Scotland. My mother took it as a sign of impending literary fortune. Naturally enough, I ignored her, despite writing being the only thing I loved [after rugby and the fairer sex].

I took the long way round to becoming an author. I've been a computer programmer and an executive in the UK Ministry of Defence, and a consultancy partner in the banking division of Price Waterhouse. Maybe that's where I got my interest in guns and crooks for my post war crime novels set in Glasgow and London.

I'm enormously proud of my Brodie Quartet but I'm now expanding my reach by writing contemporary thrillers. The first product of this broadening out is MONEY TREE now

Synagogues & Twin Towers

I was in New York last week, giving a talk to an adult literature class in a downtown synagogue, and staring into the wet depths of the square holes where the Twin Towers once stood. It's hard to know which affected me more.

The invite to talk to the Jewish class came out of the blue. Professor Jane Paznik-Bondarin of BMCC/CUNY was teaching them about the role of Jewish detectives in fiction. Who k Read more of this blog post »

Let's not confuse quantity with quality. At 771 pages, throwing in odd quotes from Schiller and Nietzsche doesn't make The Goldfinch any smarter or more readable. The writing is fairly clean and clear but often pompous. But where's the story? And who ...more

Savoured again The MAuritius Command, the 4th in O'Brian's Aubrey and Maturin novels, the best body of literary fiction of the 20th C. Apart from Dorothy Dunnett's Lymond and Niccolo series of course...
Gordon Ferris is 50% done with The Goldfinch: I love beautiful writing but Goldfinch needs beautiful editing. I'm just bored with the slow pace and tangents that add nothing except padding.

“The simple fact is that there’s something appealing to Joe Public about bypassing the long-drawn-out legal machinations, especially if they think it came up with the wrong result in their opinion, and giving the baddies a good hiding.’ Sam nodded. ‘Even worse if the message gets out and crime starts to drop.’ ‘Exactly what’s giving me qualms. There are nineteen men here’ – now I pointed at the paper – ‘who’re so incapacitated that even if they had evil written through their bones like Rothesay rock, there’s bugger all they could do about it for a while.’ I got up and retrieved the bottle and topped us both up to a level above homeopathic. ‘I’ll do four more laps in the morning.’ Sam studied me over her specs. Then we sat silently, sipping away, thinking about the consequences of the vigilante action. Knowing that taking the law into your own hands was wrong. Unless it seemed to be the better option.”
Gordon Ferris, The Hanging Shed / Bitter Water

“I left behind a great big pile of ‘if onlys’. But that way madness lies. Once we take certain turnings, once we make certain choices, there’s no way back to a time or a place or a person. We start down diverging paths and become changed in the process.”
