Paul Feel like something light-hearted, so thought i would try one of the few R. D. Wingfield 'Frost' novels i've not yet read. So Hard Frost (Inspector Frost, #4) by R.D. Wingfield is next to read for me.

Kay Chomic Just finished The Good Son by Seattle author Michael Gruber. A complex, intense, and wonderful story that taught me cultural lessons about South Asia, the Muslim religion, and gave me some insight into the intelligence community of the U.S.

Kay Chomic Well, she has only three books left to slam dunk the alphabet. I give Sue Grafton a lot of credit for that. I read her early books and enjoyed them. Too bad you didn't enjoy W is for Wasted. I've been tempted to jump back into her stories, but haven't. I'll probably read her last one, Z is for Zombie, maybe??

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 10060 comments I finished The Fala Factor by Stuart M. Kaminsky. It's 1942 and private detective Toby Peters is hired by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt to retrieve the President's pooch Fala. It seems a crackpot rival political party is trying to take over the government and may have kidnapped the dog to throw the President off his stride. This quirky plot is aided by the usual offbeat characters including Toby's amusing elderly landlady who thinks he's an exterminator/book editor; Toby's best friend, Gunther, a little person; Toby's landlord, the terrible dentist Shelly Minck; Toby's pal Jeremy, an ex-wrestler/would be poet; and so on. Not that much mystery to the plot but it's a fun, light read.

I bought these books after binge-watching the entire series one week when my husband was traveling for work -- still have not read them, though. You'll have to let us know what you think!

Paige | 81 comments Hello,
I have not been online in a while, but I have still been reading! I recently read David Baldacci's "Absolute Power" with my bookclub even though it was one of his older books I enjoyed it. I now have "Split Second" on my "to read" pile.
One of the best books I have read recently was " Guests on Earth" by Lee Smith. I had never read this author before and she is coming to Richmond, Va. soon for a reading - I hope to attend. Her ability to develop characters is fantastic! I am off to find her other books (15) and read them all!
Lee SmithGuests on Earth

I also am reading "A Week in Winter" by Maeve Binchy. It is ok but not a mystery. I used to read her books quite frequently but this book is not up there with her books of 15yrs ago.

Guests on Earth by Lee Smith
A Week in Winter by Maeve Binchy
Absolute Power by David Baldacci

Bill Finished Last Seen Wearing, a mystery from 1952, by Hillary Waugh, last night. I was definitely pleasantly surprised by it. It's a simple story of a young woman from a boarding school going missing and the investigation of the disappearance by the local police chief and his detective. I liked how it was written, how it flowed and I liked both Chief Ford and Detective Cameron. A refreshing change.

Just finished Private L.A. last night and I ended up liking it really well. Not the best in the series but overall pretty good. Today I will be starting the second in the Frankenstein series by Dean Koontz called City of Night. I'm hoping it picks up right where the first one left off, since there was unfinished business.

Olivia Turner | 1 comments Next of Sin
Next of Sin by Lisa Gordon
I read Lisa Gordon's debut novel A Sealed Fate and enjoyed her style and storytelling; however this novel is more evenly paced and far more action packed.

A successful young lawyer Gaby, thinks she has the perfect life: so why do strange dreams begin to haunt her right after her beautiful wedding. She delves into her past via visits to a psychologist and an eccentric old psychic and yet it is a chance comment at a school reunion and a dizzy spell after smoking a joint which cause that memory so long supressed to come flooding back. There was a reason she had supressed this memory - it will destroy her life.

A search for the truth soon becomes a desperate quest to stop a ruthless killer. The more she digs, the more her life and her reality unravels...where and when will it all end.

Just when you think you know where it's going there is another twist - another stab in the back or the front.

Spunky, well developed characters who will entertain you with their wit and ingenuity. Great sense of locality in the Japan setting. Also set in the UK countryside and London.

A compelling story with dialogue which adds to the sense of locality and which carries the action with ease.

Recommended to anyone who enjoys a thriller, but who also values strong female characters and powerful real life themes.

Sharon Michael | 674 comments Just finished Death of a Bankster (Maddie Richards Mystery, #2) by David Bishop second book in this series and another 5-star read for me. David Bishop has managed to develop a main female detective character that hits all my 'like' buttons ... sane, sensible, single mother with a son that handles her job and her family life with a sense of purpose and no angst, no drinking binges, no drugs, no damaging personal relationships.

Bill Starting the fifth book in the Anna Pigeon series next; Endangered Species by Nevada Barr. I quite enjoyed the first book in the DI Joe Plantagenet series; I've completed the first two now. It's a nicely written, interesting series so far. I like the plot lines, the first deals with the Resurrection Man killings and had nice twists and turns. Excellent. Btw, the book was called Seeking The Dead :0)

Jannene | 775 comments I just finished Cockroaches. It is a good book with a great plot. It twists and turns showing you only glimpses of who is the real criminal. Harry is such a flawed character. You hope beyond hope that he can get past his demons. Just when it appears he has the author throws him another curve ball and sends him into tragedy again. Harry reminds me a lot of Archie from the Gretchen and Archie Series. I wonder if the author will let him get over his demons.

message 2379: by Barbara (last edited Mar 29, 2014 06:56PM) (new)

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 10060 comments I finished Hearts of Sand by Jane Haddam. Thirty years ago college student Chapin Waring pulled off a series of bank robberies, killing two people. Her suspected partner in crime, Martin, died in a car crash after the final bank job and Chapin disappeared. Then - in the present day - Chapin reappears and is almost immediately murdered. Suspects include Chapin's friends, family, and a conspiracy nut. The police call in detective Gregor Demarkian to help with the case. While Demarkian investigates, one of Chapin's old friends is murdered. Demarkian has to determine if the murders are related to the old bank jobs or if other forces are at play. The story's characters are interesting but the clues to the mystery seem weak. Thus the solution almost seems to be pulled out of the air. Nevertheless I enjoyed the book.

message 2387: by Aiesha (new)

Aiesha (bigtexasaj) I am about 70% through The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest (Millennium, #3) by Stieg Larsson and it's pretty darn good. I must say that the 2nd and 3rd books of this trilogy were nothing like the 1st. I was told that if I could get past the boring beginning of the Dragon Tattoo book, it's definitely worth it and they were right!

Next, I'm going to take a break from my "to read" list and read a book I won here on Goodreads (Yay!) called No Safe House No Safe House by Linwood Barclay which I'm really excited about! This will be my first book by this author.

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 10060 comments I finished The Black-Eyed Blonde: A Philip Marlowe Novel by Benjamin Black. In this new Phillip Marlowe book a stunning, married blonde - Clare Cavendish - asks Marlowe to find her missing lover, Nico Peterson. Turns out Nico's dead. But wait...he only faked his death! In any case, Marlowe - bewitched by Clare - agrees to look for Nico. Unfortunately Mexican thugs are also looking for Nico and don't mind a little torture and murder to help them. As in the original Phillip Marlowe books, the P.I. drinks a lot, is witty, has a smart mouth, and doesn't want to cooperate with cops. He also has a penchant for getting beat up and almost killed. Marlowe eventually solves the case and learns once again that a beautiful woman may harbor secrets. I thought the book felt like a pretty authentic Phillip Marlowe story and I enjoyed it.
