message 2: by Esther (new)

Esther (nyctale) I am reading with Iced (Dani O'Malley #1). I am disappointed.
Next is Gardens of the Moon.

message 3: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey | 415 comments Just finished up Ship of Destiny last night and it was amazing. I want to start Tawny Man soon but I feel like a need a few books between starting something so enthralling again.

Next up is Shadow on the Crown for my last meeting with my current IRL book club.

Then I'll be tackling some "owned but haven't read" backlog. Definitely Friedman's Legacy of Kings soon and I've got lots of traveling in my near future, so my ebooks backlog is about to get a workout, too. I've been eyeing Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell for awhile...

I've just realized that we never had an April thread, or did I just miss it? Last month I finally had the energy to tackle Initiate's Trial, which was just fabulous. Needed a change of pace afterwards so I blew through River Marked in a few days - love the Mercy Thompson books! - and now I'm reading Let's Pretend This Never Happened: A Mostly True Memoir, which is a very funny memoir.

Random (rand0m1s) | 1247 comments After the fun that was last month (why do disasters always happen in threes?), Restoration is in its 7th week on my Currently Reading shelf.

I've also recently started The Shadow of the Torturer in audio.

Lindsey, I too have had Legacy of Kings as a to read since it came out in ebook format. I feel utterly guilty about this since I enjoyed the first two books so much. I think I may need to give in and put aside some time to tackle any books I have purchased more than a year ago. :)

message 7: by Pickle (new)

Pickle | 203 comments currently reading Railsea and ive got 2 books from the library that i need to read, they are The Postman & I Am Alive and You Are Dead: A Journey into the Mind of Philip K. Dick.

If i have anytime left i will read The Time Ships

message 8: by Ken (new)

Ken (ogi8745) | 1430 comments Well I am still reading Gardens of the Moon.
It quite good, a breath of fresh air but its taking me a long time to read
My reading has slowed down dramatically lately. I think its due to my switch from Transit to pedal power and I really bagged by the end of the day so I end up reading a couple of pages then the next thing I know i am sleeping.

carol. | 173 comments Audio books! Although it looks strange if you are listening to something funny and giggling your head off.

message 10: by Helen (new)

Helen I'm starting Wrayth. Just finished Spectyr last night. It's my plan to finish series' this year. I never used to read anything between a series but book of the month is a bad influence.

message 11: by Todd (last edited May 03, 2013 09:07AM) (new)

Todd | 29 comments Finally, finally I got around to reading Revelation Space, which has been on my to-read list for too long - really enjoyed that one (just finished it yesterday), and now I'm already well into Magician (another I've been wanting to read for awhile). Also, listening to Catcher in the Rye audiobook for something a bit different.

Carol wrote: "Audio books! Although it looks strange if you are listening to something funny and giggling your head off."

Ha! I know that one well enough, and if you try concealing it, you just laugh even more and everyone around you gets worried that they might have done something to cause it (or there is the possibility they think you are simply one of those crazy-laugh-at-nothing-people!).

message 12: by Random (new)

Random (rand0m1s) | 1247 comments Its not just audiobooks. I've had people giving me strange looks when giggling at print books as well.

I gave up looking sane in public a long time ago. :D

I am still reading Towers of Midnight. Then I want to read the other 2 books in Carol Berg's series that began with Transformation, and the next book in the Vlad Taltos series that I am slowly working my way through (I think I'm up to Orca). I also borrowed some books from my cousin and I probably need to read them so I can return them to her! Yikes! Better get going!

Tiemen Zwaan descriptiondescriptioncoverJustUnjustWars

Currently I am reading NOS4A2 by Joe Hill. Scary as hell and a real pageturner. There is a new King, and his name is Hill.

Then I'm either going for The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes, because I heard a lot of good things about it and the premise sounds intriguing; or You by Austin Grossman because a certain someone mentioned it on his Twitter and I'm a sucker for novels about computergames.

If there is enough time left I'll do a reread of Old Man's War by John Scalzi, because it's one of my favorites and I've been walking around some time now for an idea about an essay discussing a chapter from OMW and Just War Theory; hence also rereading Just and Unjust Wars by Michael Walzer. Philosophy, not Scifi or Fantasy but a very good read nonetheless, one I finally hope to give the proper attention it deserves.

message 18: by Random (new)

Random (rand0m1s) | 1247 comments I just started Steal Across the Sky in prep for next month. I've been wanting to try this for ages, so no way I'm going to let June start without having read this.

Afterwards, I'll probably start on The Claw of the Conciliator for the new series read.

And somewhere in there I'm determined to finish Restoration. :)

message 19: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (sisimka) Just finished The Human Division and picked up The Shadow of the Torturer. Finding it hard to get into the Gene Wolfe, but I think allergies and fatigue are the culprits there. I've got The Faded Sun: Kesrith on the pile and a couple more books to read for review, none of which I have started yet. I need to pull my socks up.

message 20: by Ken (new)

Ken (ogi8745) | 1430 comments Finally finished Gardens of the Moon. Good book, not perfect. Some issues with pacing and plotting but all in all a good read. Already pulled out book two.

In the meantime getting my Baseball mojo going since my team isnt doing all that well. I started in on The Bullpen Gospels: A Non-Prospect's Pursuit of the Major Leagues and the Meaning of Life

message 23: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jennyc89) | 127 comments I'm reading The Giver for a class and I'm listening to Dead in the Family on audio. I'm also reading The Blinding Knife but I can't get into it so I may take a break.

Anna LaForge (annalaforge) I'm a hundred pages into Joan Slonczewski's THE HIGHEST FRONTIER, about a "spacehab" college developed for rich, genetically enhanced kids to spare them from the tragedy of a ruined earth. Interesting. Lots of "hard" scientific detail. Makes me wish I knew more about genetics.

I read The Giver in elementary school and I remember loving it. I don't remember much else so I'm looking forward to reading it again.

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 372 comments I'm not really a big fan of The Giver, which I read in 4th grade, and then again in the 7th grade in the same school district. My class in fourth grade even saw a play of The Giver. Overall, The Giver is against my political view.

P.S. The book is being made into a movie.

I decided to break my pattern of interspersing other books between the Wheel of Time books since I'm up to the last one, A Memory of Light. I'm about a third of the way through it. Then I'll go back to Berg's Rai-Kirah series.

I used hope that they would bring back the wonder of a 10 year old seeing Star Wars for the first time....They never do. I think that's why I gave up on them a long time ago. Most of the the Entertainment books are like that.

I just finished A Memory of Light this morning (really, 3 AM!!). IMO, best book of the series. I had never read The Wheel of Time books before and the payoff in the last 3 books (the Jordan/Sanderson books) made slogging through some of the others worthwhile. There were bright spots in all the books and I can't deny that Jordan's vision was complex, almost too complicated. But it was a good conclusion to the story.

I'm not sure what I'll read next. I have a few things queued up but haven't decided what to choose. Something with fewer characters!

message 35: by Helen (new)

Helen Good to know Kathi, I have the last 4 to read. It's the getting started that takes my energy but perhaps I'll not face that soon. I always enjoy them when I'm reading - despite the plait tugging, clothing descriptions etc! Did you have to get up to work after your late night?

I'm reading The Shadow of the Torturer, it is excellent.

I decided to give my brain a break and read something fluffy, so I'm re-reading Rachel Caine's Weather Wardens series. I finished Ill Wind the other day and am almost done with Heat Stroke. This series is a lot of fun - in a lot of ways it's a typical paranormal romance/urban fantasy, but the supernatural beings are djinn, not werewolves or vampires or fae, and Jo's power is to control the weather so there's a lot of cool meteorology in it (I took a graduate course in meteorology last year so it's fun to re-read the series with a solid science background this time and realize that Caine knows what she's talking about).

Shel wrote: "I decided to give my brain a break and read something fluffy, so I'm re-reading Rachel Caine's Weather Wardens series." These books were a deal at a local used book store so I bought them but have yet to read them. I'm fascinated by weather (as are my dad and my sister Barb who has Down syndrome--must be a family thing), which was part of the draw for me.

Helen wrote: "Did you have to get up to work after your late night?"
No--thank goodness, I'm retired. I would have quit much sooner otherwise!

I borrowed some books from my cousin that seem like YA and relatively easy-reading--the Nicholas Flamel series by Michael Scott--so I decided to dive into the first of those.

For me it was a disappointment. Sure there were some wonderful scenes but I got a bit tired of the last battle. Way too long for me.

Ken (ogi8745) | 1430 comments Finished up The Bullpen Gospels. I enjoyed it. Not as good as Ball Four but an interesting look into Minor League baseball.

Still in a baseball frame of mind...Watching the game now actually. So started reading Watching Baseball Smarter: A Professional Fan's Guide for Beginners, Semi-experts, and Deeply Serious Geeks
I understand most of the game but there are a lot of weird stuff I just don't get.

After this will be another Malazan book

Ok, I've gotten in quite a bit of reading lately. I borrowed The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series from my cousin and I've read the first 2 books. Engaging YA fantasy, so far. I also read book 2 in the Rai-Kirah series by Carol Berg, Revelation and am ready to start the final book in that trilogy, Restoration.

I just last night finished The Alteration by Kingsley Amis (Stefan's recent review of it intrigued me enough to request it from the library) and enjoyed most of the book, though I really disliked the ending (details of why under the spoiler tag at my review here: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...).

Now I'm back to my Weather Wardens re-read with Windfall.
