Iris | 27 comments So, you know how there are books which are universally considered amazing and groundbreaking? And if you say that you hate them, people will give you this weird look and then walk away?

Well, I read LOTR, and I hated it. There, I said it. I went through all three books just to see what happened in the end. Still hated it.

I loved the movies though!

Confess your darkest secrets - which book/s do you hate that everyone else loves? Harry Potter? Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy? Twilight?

(Yes, I am joking about Twilight!!!)

message 2: by Christine (new)

Christine (MissWinterly) | 18 comments ...I hated LoTR too. I couldn't get into it, it bored me. But the movies ARE awesome.

message 3: by Jason (new)

Jason Purdy | 32 comments I've read all the Twilight books, and personally I hated them. Same goes for The Host.

I gave up on LoTR books because they're just so over long and wordy, but I enjoyed The Hobbit, it was shorter and easier.

I hate everything by Dean Koontz. I love Stephen King, and to me, Koontz is just a poor man's version of the King.

And some classics are dull. I'll stop complaining now.

message 4: by Angela (new)

Angela (angelaxx) | 4 comments Brave New World and The Great Gatsby.

message 5: by Angel (new)

Angel I couldn't get into Hunger Games. I read the first book- eh. I saw the movie- eh. Everyone around me was completely enthralled. I just didn't get it. Suffice to say I only read the first book.

message 6: by Jason (new)

Jason Purdy | 32 comments I agree with The Hunger Games. Forced my way through the first book, kind of shrugged, thought it was a bit silly. The film took all the bits out of the book that I liked and replaced them with rubbish.

Don't get all the fuss, it's just Twilight but with silly clothes instead of vampires.

message 7: by Robert (new)

Robert Spake (ManofYesterday) | 61 comments I haven't read LOTR but I didn't think the movies were as amazing as a lot of people say they are.

As for books, I hated Pride & Prejudice. I usually try and read on with a book even if I'm not enjoying it that much but with that one my eyes just glazed over and I couldn't get into it at all.

message 8: by Lawrence (new)

Lawrence Cramer | 12 comments I hate reading Tom Clancy. I'm former military and thought they would be interesting. But no one really needs to have a two page description detailing the ballistics of a 5.56 round. Exaggeration of course, but you get my point. I suppose I prefer my books to read a bit faster. That style works for some, just not me.

message 9: by Brittany (new)

Brittany Perry | 229 comments I hated the last Inheritance book, Hate twilight, and I don't like James Patterson except his witch wizard series

message 10: by Cora (new)

Cora (missteacher333) | 106 comments I tried reading John Grisham's The Firm and couldn't get past the third chapter. Don't like his style or Nora Robert's.

message 11: by Megan (new)

Megan | 29 comments The Catcher in the Rye and A Confederacy of Dunces. I found both main characters insufferable. People will say that I just "didn't get it." Well, I guess I didn't.

message 12: by Gray (new)

Gray (lgraya) | 3 comments Game of Thrones....I read quickly if a book is any good and it took me 4 months to get through the first half so I finally gave up. Everyone told me I would love it, but other than a couple especially interesting incidents and characters it was like pulling teeth trying to force myself to read it.

message 13: by Hong (new)

Hong (zen_strike) | 16 comments The Giver. I've hated it for years

message 14: by Iris (new)

Iris | 27 comments Megan wrote: "The Catcher in the Rye and A Confederacy of Dunces. I found both main characters insufferable. People will say that I just "didn't get it." Well, I guess I didn't."

I didn't get Catcher in the Rye, either. And that's like, the only thing I remember about the damn book.

message 15: by Maggie (new)

Maggie I hated many of the classics that I read in high school. Re- read most of them as an adult and still hated them! 1984, Animal farm, The pearl etc. Also the 1st book in the Hunger Games series.

message 16: by Kenna (new)

Kenna Jean (mskennajean) | 3 comments I'll be completely honest, I couldn't stand JK Rowling's new book. Took me over 2 weeks to get into the first hundred pages, so I said screw it and quit. One of the first books I didn't force myself to finish.

Stephanie (silverspurs501) Kenna wrote: "I'll be completely honest, I couldn't stand JK Rowling's new book. Took me over 2 weeks to get into the first hundred pages, so I said screw it and quit. One of the first books I didn't force mysel..."

I hated Casual Vacancy as well. I pushed through the entire thing, and at the end asked myself 'what was the point'? What a disapointment.

message 18: by мєℓ (new)

мєℓ I try so hard to stay focus on "The Hobbit" but that's hard. Long journey (in the wood especially), very few actions for me.

Not my cup of tea

message 19: by Purbita (new)

Purbita (Read-addict) | 50 comments Cora wrote: "I tried reading John Grisham's The Firm and couldn't get past the third chapter. Don't like his style or Nora Robert's."

i read around 10 chapters of The Firm and finally gave up... It made me really sleepy
i hate twilight too.. Even listening to people talk about it gives me a headache

message 20: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Friend (SFSmits) | 17 comments I really really did not like Lord of the Flies. There was either too much symbolism or just the idea in general upset me... I know it's supposed to be a challenging piece with a lot of imagery and political issues addressed, but it just upset me more. Not a fan!

message 21: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten Habegger (madhatter2713) I read the first ten pages of LoTR and quit. I hate it. I barely enjoy the movies anymore. I can't get in to star wars either

message 22: by Chai (new)

Chai Smith (perfectlyunperfect) | 12 comments I hate twilight, couldn't get past the first few chapters. Anne rice books are good just a little to slow for my taste. I'm not much of fan of the witch and wizard series it bugs me when you can pick up a bug in the middle of the series and know what's going on.

message 23: by Katie (new)

Katie I hated 1984. I got why it was a big deal and really liked the concept, just not the delivery. I also didn't like The Great Gatsby at all.

And then loads of people recommended Noughts and Crosses to me as a fantastic YA book. I thought it was just awful.

message 24: by Dean (new)

Dean MacAllister (deanmacallister) I just read The Alchemist...probably the most over-rated book I have come across. It contradicts itself constantly, pretends to be profound, is badly written and has a story line a teenager could come up with. What did I miss?

message 25: by Robin (last edited Apr 24, 2013 04:34PM) (new)

Robin LMD I can enjoy reading fluff as much as the next person, but I could not even pretend to like the first two Stephanie Plum books by Janet Evanovich.

message 26: by Guluna (new)

Guluna (toastedbagels) Hate ...? No I just dislike.
The Alchemist
The Hunger Games.(sorry but I don't really like it)

message 27: by N (new)

N | 276 comments Dune by Frank Herbert - there are like 56 books in the series to sum up my feelings 'yack'. Crime and Punishment (a crime to read and punishing) and The Edge of Darkness.

message 28: by Adri (new)

Adri (jadri7) | 76 comments The great Gatsby, catcher in the rye, prince of tides, and committed by Elizabeth Gilbert..this was probably THE most disappointing cuz I loved eat, pray, love.

message 29: by Adri (new)

Adri (jadri7) | 76 comments Oh forgot Miss peregrine home for peculiar children! Best part was pics

message 30: by Malu (new)

Malu | 37 comments I hate LOTR too, I just can't get into them idk why but I always fall asleep when I try to read them. I don't hate Twilight but I dont' like too.

message 31: by Angel (new)

Angel Adri wrote: "Oh forgot Miss peregrine home for peculiar children! Best part was pics"

Agreed.

message 32: by Jodi (new)

Jodi (readinbooks) I really didn't like Book 3 of The Hunger Games. I loved books one and two but really didn't like book three.

Really couldn't stand Atonement. I accidentally read it twice and didn't like it either time.

I already ranted in a different thread above but I am so sick of series books. It seems like every book is part of a series these days. Rant over.

Karen L (1karen1) | 18 comments Jodi wrote: "I really didn't like Book 3 of The Hunger Games. I loved books one and two but really didn't like book three."

I know I read Mocking Jay. But I honestly don't remember a single thing about it. I figure I'll pick it up again for a quick re-read when the movie comes out.

I understand what you mean Jodi. I have repeatedly started reading books before realising that I have just signed myself up to an 8 part series. I am always on the lookout for stand alone books that are great on their own. Now...back to reading A Clash of Kings...

message 35: by N (new)

N | 276 comments :D @Dean

@jodi I'm reading the night circus its very good and STAND ALONE OMG!

message 36: by Jodi (new)

Jodi (readinbooks) Dean, I just read Game of Thrones in March and am looking forward to Clash of Kings in the summer. It isn't that I don't like series books, but it seems like every book is part of a series these days. Many books I have bought not knowing they were part of a series and that I find frustrating. Oh well, it isn't like I have to finish a series if I am not enjoying it.

Nicola that is good to know that Night Circus is a good book. It is on my TBR shelf. I will get to it one day. Thanks for the suggestion.

message 37: by Dean (new)

Dean MacAllister (deanmacallister) I see you are from Perth Nicola. So is the protagonist in my new stand-alone novel....cough...

message 38: by N (new)

N | 276 comments Yes I'm a Perthite, would be nice to read a book about perth that isn't Cloud Street or, erm, hmm, nope that's it :)

message 39: by Ashley (new)

Ashley | 38 comments If I Stay and Where She Went by Gayle Forman. Almost every review I read said they loved them but I just...didn't. They were just ok for me.

message 40: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5929 comments I could not read The Davinci Code, Eragon, or The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. People rave about all three, but I just couldn't get into them. I always want to go back and try them again because other people love them so much.

message 41: by Dean (new)

That's a very soft hatred Kristie... where is the venom?

message 42: by Kristine (new)

Kristine (freyatink) | 9 comments I hate LOTR. I hate hobbits. They sing too damn much and have hairy feet. I hate James Joyce. I hate Dickens, although I like his stories I just don't like reading them. And Herman Melville...stab me but don't make me read him again. Tybee and Billy Budd went on forever. I didn't like Atonement either or The Confessions OR! Gone Girl. I don't care for Stephen King. The Stand was predictable dribble.

Okay I think that's it for now.

You know...some kid in a cape just hung himself. I hope you are happy.

message 44: by Jackie Lynn (new)

Jackie Lynn (romancenovlover) I hate Ernst Hemingway. I read A Farewell to Arms, and I just didn't get it. It wasn't a type of story where there was a beginning, middle, and an end. It just "was". I also tried to read The Sun Also Rises, but I had to throw it away. I didn't even care that I wasted the money on it, I wanted to kill myself while reading it.

message 45: by Cora (new)

Cora (missteacher333) | 106 comments Dean - you are a funny guy! Keep it coming. :-D

message 46: by N (new)

N | 276 comments OMG how did I forget Ulysses by James Joyce? Like the Jaberwocky being recited over and over by a drunken Irishman ; p

message 47: by Equine Dragon (new)

Equine Dragon | 83 comments Ok. Yay. I liked the first two twilight books but I never finished the third and didn't even bother reading the fourth. It just got progressively horrible. I hated 50 shades of gray. Ohhhhh it was just cheap porn yuck. I hate Harry Potter and I can't stand The Hobbit. There....I have exercised the demons

message 48: by Jodi (new)

Jodi (readinbooks) Rachel wrote: "Ok. Yay. I liked the first two twilight books but I never finished the third and didn't even bother reading the fourth. It just got progressively horrible. I hated 50 shades of gray. Ohhhhh it was ..."

50 shades.....oh soooo bad. I thought I was the only one who didn't like it. The writing was just horrible.

message 49: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie | 1 comments I also hate the Twilight series. I hate all things Jane Austen... And because it is one of my all time favorite movies, I was beyond excited to read Little Women and I couldn't believe how torturously boring that novel was. Such a let down. I relieve this was already mentioned on here, but I hated the latest J.K. Rowling novel. Being a huge HP fan who read the last 4 novels in one sitting the day they came out... I couldn't believe that I struggled and white knuckles my way through the first hundred pages and was so frustrated with it, I put it down for a month before picking it up again and finishing it, because not finishing a book would drive my OCD bonkers.

message 50: by Haifa (new)

Haifa (ihaifa) I hated Memoirs of a Geisha.. Everyone was fussing about it and compared it to many great books but I found the characters really dumb and helpless.. Thank you for keeping this zone to let out all our hatred. :/
