Wendy, that's definitely the "beginning"... and where things seem to pick up a bit more than just all background stuff.

Some of the book seems random, at times, like her work stuff and the old "friends" they meet at the gas station. But I know I'm repeating myself... I'm just really happy and excited that the series holds up! After reading my way all the way through, I can go back and re-read book 1 and SEE that the characters and events and even some of the randomness really all do come in to the bigger picture.

What do you all think of her family? Dex? Perry, herself?

What do you think about the lighthouse/dark house? The Creepy Clown Lady? Old Roddy?

I love Dex and Perry for sure. Her family is really great too, with all the unique personalities. They feel realistic. I can sense Perry's child like irritation with them, but at the same time you can tell that they all really love each other.

I like the moments, like Perry bumping into old friends. It all gives you a sense of where Perry was, and where she is now. It's sad to read how awesome Perry is, but she feels so insecure.

And Dex and Perry together are so funny! I'm laughing outloud at their back and forth banter. I love it.

I'm not sure what I think about the lighthouse/darkhouse yet. I think it's pretty obvious that (view spoiler)[Perry sees dead people, lol. I mean, tell me if I'm wrong but I have a feeling that that's what she saw when she was a kid too and that her 'panic attacks' are really the ghosts trying to break through. That the Creep Clown Lady, the fisherman she saw in the elevator, and Old Roddy are all ghosts that are breaking through the block that therapy gave her. Maybe I'm over thinking it but I keep hearing that Jersey Medium that's on TV, lol, saying that she can always tell when 'spirit' is trying to communicate with her because she starts to feel like she's having a panic attack.

And also, this I'm not so sure about, but I think that Dex may be an empath to such an extreme that maybe he gets a sense of what people are thinking? He seems to know what Perry is thinking way too easily. Like, digging around for change doesn't necessarily mean that she wants a coffee. But he seemed to know. And also, his random grins that creep her out seem to happen after she's been thinking something pretty hilarious (hide spoiler)].

BUT, I could totally be wrong and overthinking everything.

Wendy, you're definitely on the right thinking track!

I don't like Perry's mom. She seems too phony and fake to me - too much into the outer image and not enough about substance. I thought that Ada might be that way, too, but Ada's her own person, even if she is into all that fashion stuff. I don't know what to think about Perry's dad. But I liked her Uncle Al; he genuinely seems to like Perry and be concerned for her well-being. I even like the crazy twin cousins!

Perry's mom seems like she's got issues, lol. But so does my own mom. So do we all. I like it, I feel like it makes her more human. And I do think she loves her daughter.

Perry´s mom and sister work my nerves. I think the sister is just like the mom just calmer since she is a teenager. The mom has serious issues. She is too shallow.

Yeah, he's her husband. Way to go, right? It cracked me up to watch the videos and find out that the guy in them "playing" Dex is her hubby. There was at least one video or cover where it was another guy, but this one is all Dex. Which made me wonder how much she borrowed from him for Dex; and if she shares any similarities with Perry?

The more I contemplate Red Fox, the more I remember what a good read it was! It's very well done. It's just a different super natural element. Dex and Perry are forced to rescue themselves from an increasing evil and (view spoiler)[physical assault. (hide spoiler)] And lots of enticing Dex and Perry interaction!

It's book 3 though that made me regard Karina as a genius of supernatural story telling. That story is a serious mind trip!

I would assume that we're going to be using this for all buddy reads like how she was using it in the HR group (the title was just changed with each book), but I'm not sure if she's continuing to do it that way. She'll be able to answer the question for you.

Either way, there will still be a place to talk about the continuing series because we have a topic for the entire series in place, so if anyone is continuing on with the series and this topic ends up being used for something else, the conversation can be moved over there.

I will be doing group reads slightly different. If a book wins the poll and we have a series for it already in place, I'll just temporarily move the series topic over to the group reads folder for discussion, then move it back to its original location when we're done with the read.

What do you think of Red Fox? I really liked it - a lot! Scary, creepy, and all that, but I felt like Perry started to get a better handle on her "gift" and what it means. And why things seem to be coming out of the woodwork at her.

Dex - both frustrated me and elated me in this book. So many tender moments with Perry. But obviously, a lot in his past that's not being told.

Max - what do you think about this guy? He will show up again in later books, and I don't think that's a spoiler, since you can read his name in the descriptions. Which is why I want to know what you think about him?

Okay, I finished it. So I can answer these happily.

I really liked it! I really can see Perry coming into her own and getting a handle on who she is and her gift.

Dex, I friggin love Dex. He's my favorite in the series. I know he's holding a lot back but I think it's just too painful for him to talk about right now. And (view spoiler)[he keeps saying that he's afraid of Perry, but I think that it's because he feels VERY strongly for her and in a lot of ways it reminds him of his relationship with Abby and he's afraid he'll get it wrong again. Or that he'll love her like he's held himself back from loving and she'll die (hide spoiler)]. I love Dex.

I actually really liked Max. (view spoiler)[I know that he was jealous of Dex, and I was so glad that Perry realized that Max's issues with Dex are based on his jealousy. But overall I think he's a good guy and I was hoping that he'd join up with them for the show (hide spoiler)]. Yep, I totally read all the book synopsis, lmao.

I like Max... but his motives seem suspect to me. It was OK that he told Perry what he did about Dex, even though Dex clearly didn't want to discuss it. But it was when Max decided to tell everyone at the dinner table how Dex & Perry met - that didn't hit me quite right.

And also, (view spoiler)[Max kept going out of his way to warn Perry about Dex. I couldn't figure out if it was lingering jealousy, because Max was convinced that Abby was after *him* first and then went to Dex? Anger, because Max feels like Dex is responsible for Abby's death? Or just a way to get a dig in at Dex - to have Perry trust Max more? 'Cuz Max definitely has his grudge on about Dex. (hide spoiler)]

Plus he's about as Cajun as I am - LOL! Although I can give Ms. Halle not knowing about Cajuns, I guess. I could see Max being a good ol' redneck boy from Northern Louisiana or even maybe from the Lake Charles border with Texas... but not Lafayette. I know Lafayette. I lived and went to college in Lafayette. I even worked at the local news station as a producer-in-training. And Max is not Cajun.

LOL! I know nothing about Louisiana, or about being Cajun. In fact, I didn't remember that's where he was from anyway. For me it was just 'he's southern', lol.

But I definitely agree (view spoiler)[ that he's got his issues with Dex. I think it's for a few reasons though. First, yeah he'd love if Perry liked him and he got one over on Dex. That's a bonus. But I also think that it was legitimate when he said that she doesn't really know him and that he's got a few screw's loose. I think he knows more of Dex's past and he's warning her away from the Dex he knew before. If she would have left with him, mores the better, lol (hide spoiler)].

I also didn't like what he did at the dinner table, with the history on how they met. It was pretty intentional.

Yeah, I liked Max but there was something there for sure. That's funny about him not being written like a true Cajun. haha! I thought he fit more being a Texan.

Otherwise, I guarantee that once you get into book #4, you won't be able to stop until you've read everything currently published in this series. AND I have a bit of out-of-order reading preference to throw at you.

More Book 2 - Red Fox discussion: (Putting my questions into spoiler tags)
(view spoiler)[* Shan and Sarah were having an affair. But were all of their antics simply to "wake up" Will? That seems... not thinking too far ahead to the ultimate solution.

* After Max, Perry, and Dex got involved and everyone knew it was about Skinwalkers, did Shan and Sarah change their minds (or decide finally) that they were going to run off together?

* Did they intend to inhabit Dex's body or simply take his "power"? The way Sarah and Shan talk about it, it makes me think that Shan took on Rudy's body, thus why there wasn't a body to find.

He (Shan) looked over at the wolf and pointed at Dex. "You sure this is the one you want? She seems to have more brains."

That's kinda weird to me, since they can take on the shape of anyone they want with only a few personal items (like hairs). So I don't quite understand what they wanted with Dex.

Also, I know that page 303 sort of explains it by saying that they killed Rudy and took his power. It implies that's what they wanted with Dex. But then why did Sarah say to Perry on pages 286-287:

"You have away about you. It's useful. But you think too much. You want too much. Your ability to retract from reality is useful, but...we'd prefer someone who is a bit 'all there'."
I wasn't all there? Maybe not at the moment when my thoughts not only seemed like abstract objects but were being read at the same time.
"He'll be much easier," she said. Her tone was tinged with menace.
He?
Without thinking, my arms and legs seized in their holds like I was some crazy attack dog held back by a choke chain.
"Yes," she said. "We've been looking for someone else. Rudy gave Shan everything he needed. And Dex will give the same for me."

Which sounds to me like more than just power. It sounds like body... maybe 'essence'/'soul'?

*The Bar Incident: Was it to take Perry's power somehow? Was it to scare Perry into leaving - almost being raped would do it for me! Was it to prove to the "white kids" that Skinwalkers were involved? ('Cuz I think the Deer Woman incident that Perry and Dex had did it. At least for Dex, finally.)

* Shan - he seemed miffed at Sarah for bringing up Skinwalkers and curses at the dinner table. But by the time dinner was over, he seemed angry that none of them, especially Max, Perry, and Dex, would acknowledge that this was about a curse or worse. Why? Was he insulted by their "disbelief"?

* The Car at the Beginning: What was with this? Dex and Perry were just outside of Albequrque, at least 2-3 hours from Red Fox. Why was there a compact car in the middle of the road with a coyote in the back? Was it just foreshadowing? Because that seemed odd to me... why would Shan or Sarah be so far from Red Fox? Were they trying to stop Dex and Perry from even arriving? (hide spoiler)]

OK, enough about Book #2... oh wait - did anyone change her mind about any of the characters by the end of the book?

(view spoiler)[It sounded like they were trying to bring Will back. I'm not sure if that would mean Sarah and Will would reunite or what, but I think they wanted him back.

I don't think that they were ever intending to run off, not until after they were 'outed'. I think they just wanted to get stronger and stronger.

I don't think it was that they took Rudy's 'body'. I think that just disappeared, or someone will find it at a really weird random place at some point. I think they are stealing their life essence. It's obvious that Perry and Dex have something pretty powerful about them. I think Perry is too difficult. She's too guarded. What was odd to me, was that I odn't think she's anymore guarded and 'off her game' than Dex is. I got why they thought she wasn't a great choice, but I want to know why Dex WAS. He's a little crazy, he's on edge. He's guarded... Was it because he was without his medication so he was more 'open' than Perry is? As far as why killing and not just a hair, I would assume that by Killing you get the full power instead of a trickle. They absorbed everything instead of borrowing a little.

I don't think the near rape was about stealing her power. Bird said that they would do anything they could to kill her. Just the same as the crow and the snake were just intended to kill her. We have no idea if those men would have stopped at just raping her. I mean, his hand turned into a claw and ripped into her skin. The likelihood is that if Dex hadn't shown up, they would have killed her. I think it was because of her and Dex's ability to get through these things is what led them to wanting to steal their essence, but that in the beginning it was only about killing them.

I think Shan was upset she brought it up because he didn't want Sarah to play games and point them in the right direction. It felt like Sarah liked to be snarky about the whole thing. Like in the beginning when Dex pointed out that she wasn't showing good Christian ethics by being so rude and she laughed, almost sarcastically. She was very caustic, and Shan thought that she was playing with fire. Then, when they pretended to not even give them a second thought he was miffed because he felt so powerful. Insulted, yes.

And the car, who knows. I mean, who's to say that it even was Sarah and Shan. Skinwalkers have been around for years, so we can't assume they are the only ones around meddling with that kind of magic. I definitely think it was just foreshadowing. Maybe the person in the car WAS a skinwalker, lol. It's not like they saw a body. This did feel a little random to me, it could have been left out (hide spoiler)].

Did the trip to Dex's friend's house (the one who owns the boat) seem random to anyone else? I mean, it seemed to take up a lot of time. Was it just to have the interaction between Dex and the little girl?

Unraveling the tale on the island of the little girl, her mother, the pastor/priest, and the colony... did anyone else get whiplash trying to piece it all together?

The animals... AGAIN? Were they just afraid of Dex & Perry? Or were they afraid of the ghosts on the island tracking Dex & Perry? At first, I wondered if we had Skinwalkers following them around. I already think raccoons are creepy, but now?!!!

The pastor/priest tying up Perry.... I get why Mary was trying to keep Perry from leaving (or at least I think I do). But why the priest?

Did Perry and Dex fulfill Mary's "prophecy" by freaking themselves out? Why do you think it was so easy for them to turn on one another and destroy the trust that they'd fought so hard to build up? (hide spoiler)]

Lori, (view spoiler)[I loved that strip club scene!!! I think it showed another side of Perry, and he IS a bit of a perv. And I was not surprised at all that he did that after finding out that Jen might be pregnant. He was... spiraling and wanted distraction.

Mmmm, I didn't think the trip to his friends house was more random than other things in the series. It was the same as having Perry bump into her college friends in the first book. It established a bit of a history for Dex, showed us a glimpse of how other's interacted with him. Plus, it gave you the opposite feel of Max in the previous book, with a friendship that was actually close and warm vs a history with a guy who he couldn't stand. Plus, he had to borrow the boat from someone. I think it gives a sense of realism and a deeper connection to the characters. I have random friends that occasionally interact with other friends, lol. (I think it was less random than the random abandoned car/coyote in Red Fox.)

Mmmm, at first I was a little confused about the ghost story but I actually figured out earlier than the reveal that Mary killed her own daughter. And that Seb was her lover. I think I kept up pretty good once it got going. My confusion was more in, who the hell was the freaky skin peeling baby? Was it supposed to be Maddie as a baby? And if so, why were seeing her as a baby when she died at 4, and we'd already seen her at 4? It felt like she was just trying to make the scene as freaky as possible, but it didn't fit to me.

They were definitely NOT afraid of Dex and Perry, lol. Scared racoons run not attack. Unless you corner a coon they're gonna avoid you. The same is definitely true of a deer. I think it's that they were insane, lol. The same way the island affected Dex and Perry's moods, making them irrationally angry and quick to attack, the same was true of the animals on the island. They were 'insane coons/deer', lol.

Mary explained this in a sense, they want to punish 'others' for not taking responsibility for what happened on the island. Perry and Dex weren't the first to die this way on the island. And I think if you pair that with the sexual tension between Dex and Perry with the sexual problems going on when Mary died, and then the age that Perry was matching the age that Mary was... I think they were recreating Mary's death and they were planning to kill Dex. (I was surprised that we never got an explanation for the shoe with the foot in it! That bothered me more.)

I don't think it was 'easy'. I think the magic of the island just made it happen. They were enthralled. Mary told her exactly what would happen. Dex wouldn't let her leave. He'd make her go back to the camp because he 'forgot something'. THat told me that it played out the same way over and over. It's like... do you watch Buffy? There's an episode in season 3, I Only Have Eyes for You, and in that episode kids in the school keep reinacting the murder of a teacher by a student, over and over, but it's because the ghosts can't get the ending the want. I'm not saying Mary and the Priest were looking for a particular ending, just that they kept making the campers do the same things over and over. Fighting, then hatred, then saying each other is crazy, yadda yadda. (No, I don't think they did. I think Mary and the Priest and everyone will still be there doing this to others. I'm not sure if the lack of closure for these ghost stories is cool or bothersome, lol. The person inside me wants them to 'fix it' but at the same time I kind of like that it's realistic and they just film it and go (hide spoiler)].

That's part of what scared me. Dex and Perry losing faith in each other and neither of them having any control over it. I feared for them.

I didn't like the strip club scene. Call me old fashion but I would never accompany a guy to one! But I can relate to Wendy's comment of he wanted a distraction, and Perry's a good sport and supportive friend.

I thought the visit to Dexs friend to borrow the boat as necessary. I actually like these brief encounters with Dex and Perry's friends from the past.

Book 4... (view spoiler)[I love this book, because Perry really seems to come into herself - more confidence, more assertive, better self-image. And then I hate it, because it all seems to come crashing down in the end. She seems to lose everything that she gained.

I hate that the communication issues tear Perry & Dex apart, again. I love that Perry saves Dex, again.

I hate the Abby story - the hate that Abby has. I wondered if the interrupted cleansing ritual with Rudy is what brought Abby back - had her "sticking" to Dex, as it were, determined to punish him. Ghosts are so vengeful! And she's so wrong...

I didn't know how to feel about Perry's switching out Dex's pills... I know that he was happy to feel in book 2, but it didn't seem right that Perry took it upon herself to do this.

The Creepy Clown Lady - she's very interwoven into Dex's and Perry's lives. She's got her own novella in this series (the one with the creepy lipstick lady on the cover), and it explains so much! But I love how she intervened as part of the recording!

The "other" ghost show - cracked me up and then made me really angry when they left Dex & Perry locked in the basement. But I love that Experiment in Terror is popular enough to spawn another show, even if it is competition; because they're such frauds.

I loved the Shownet people (except for Jenn and the camera guy - what a douche canoe!). Loved, loved, loved Rebecca! Loved, loved, loved most of the Christmas party. Although date-wise, this party has to happen really early in December... wait until you get into the next book and see what you think about the dates involved. They're important.)

Hang in there and keep reading - this is a very tough book; probably one of the more emotionally and mentally draining of the series! The scary really got to me, and I don't get all that freaked out.

Hate to tell you, but resolution isn't quick in coming. And you probably won't like the end of this book. But there IS light, ultimately, at the end of the series tunnel - can I say that or do I have to put it in spoiler tags? Keep the longer view in mind. You've got a few novellas in-between, and they'll shed a LOT of light on what's going on in this book.
