Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments I actually prefer the review format over there. With the whole 'appropriate tone' thing that Goodreads has going on right now, I'm debating on just linking my GR review to my booklikes one.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments I posted it in the currently reading topic a few days back, but this looks to be where we're compiling accounts.

Here's mine at booklikes. http://stacia.booklikes.com/ I can't say I'm particularly fond of the site (nowhere near as social as GR), but since I have friends who have left GR for good and I don't want to lose contact with them as readers, I finally caved and made an account there.

message 253: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) I see where I can do that link to GR... but I can't figure out how to work it. I feel really inadequate when I try to navigate that site.

I'd think it would be EASY to see if it's hooked up or not. Obviously, my "hook" isn't in, or I'd see my most recent reviews. *sigh*

Stacia - I'll add you to my list. And I'll make more of an effort to figure my way through over there.

I still haven't seen the official anything from GR re: "appropriate tone". Amazon and GR will lose a lot if they insist on censorship; it's one thing to control language - it's quite another to control criticisms.

It's definitely not near as social, which is why I just can't see leaving Goodreads all together. I'll just use both, haha.

Though, it's not so much what they're saying as much as how it's all playing out. You get more information following the conversations afterwards. Like this post/response was pretty awesome:

Vanessa Eden Patton (vanessaeden) | 108 comments I wish gr would do something about some of the pompous a$$ holes on here. that would be nice.

message 257: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) Hmmm... so did this notice just conveniently slip off our pages?

Those of you who are Mods, I'm sure you appreciate the thin line one walks. But yikes! Let's have a true dialogue, not just a You Vill Enjoy policy! No one should be attacked, author or reader, but there has to be some safe place to vent about either or both.

Loved Leah the author's post (Wendy's last link). Says it all. GOODREADS UBER MODS, hope you catch this one. And BTW, the whole new "flag" next to reply? What's up with that? Can't you at least give us a "like" click, too, and not just a "flag"?

If GR Uber Mods continue in this vein, then yeah, I'll keep my activity here limited - mostly to Groups, where I can keep up with ya'll, what you're reading, and what's going on.

I'll adopt the Watch And See attitude for now.

Thanks for keeping me in the know.

message 258: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments Yep, I'm sticking around for the cataloging and the chatting with you ladies.

I'm not sure if we got individual notices, honestly. Or if they just put it int he feed back group. I certainly don't remember seeing it.

message 259: by Stacia (the 2010 club) (last edited Sep 23, 2013 01:47PM) (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments It looks like GR and BL is not syncing up properly when it comes to writing one review and posting it in both locations. This is sort of a discouragement to me because both sites format differently. How much work is it if you use html and pictures to have to do it two different ways for both sites? If it's two completely things, I might be sporadic in writing for both sites, or end up doing like Wendy is doing and writing in one place, and providing a link on the other.

I've been debating on taking a big, fat, reviewing break for a while. I wish that i didn't have a bunch of galleys that I'd requested, more than half of which won't end up getting read if my recent reading slump is any indication.

I had my fun being on the top list for a little while. The novelty has passed. Eventually, you realize that in order to stay on it, you have to keep up with consistently reviewing, even if you don't feel like it (which I don't really want to anymore).

Writing reviews (phase 1) started out for me as a way to discuss books with friends from groups (not strangers). Writing creative reviews (phase 2) started out as a way for me to write something every day or two, in order to keep my mind working and thinking in a "writer" mindset. It's my goal to be published by the end of the year (under a different name and I won't be promoting here), so I've shifted that focus over to a different type of writing which has nothing to do with reviewing. Hopefully, that will be something which nets me more of a personal reward than reviewing ever did.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Sorry for the ramble. I think I've been very disenchanted with GR, GR drama and reviewer politics for a while. It's really the personal friendships and groups (several of which are now secret) that keep me on this site.

Most of the "buzz" books of late have been horrific recs from people who seem to like everything, so I've been in search for hidden gems and perusing trusted friends' shelves instead.

That's the way it works for me. I invest time in seaching books and friends with afinity. Good luck with your next picks, Stacia. And with your own works too! A different name? I hope you let on the pseudonym to some of us, when the time comes ;)

message 262: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) I LOVED Leah's post. And totally agree as a reader, I want people's honest reviews to help determine my choices. Because I've picked up books that got negative reviews as much as positive ones.

I also don't get as an author, how it helps me to be reviewed on a site where everyone is being mandated to play nice. That's useless - both to me in growing as an artist and to my readers who will just discount all the reviews anyways. (And I've yet to see how authors are supposed to behave in this brave new world.)

I'm in process of importing books to Booklikes but yeah, I really like the social aspect and friendships I've made in GR.

message 263: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments I transfer my reviews back and forth, and it's not too bad, but at the same time I don't use a lot of images. Actually, I rarely use them.

I think that's why I'm going to primarily post my reviews on booklikes and just put the link in on GR. At least while booklikes grows and adds and tweaks their features. It really is a fledgling site so I'm sure as they grow they'll create more social aspects.

message 264: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments I wonder if you can send booklikes.com suggestions of what we want? that would be cool. LIke we want to have some groups. Sounds like they know people are uploading books like crazy and that they're slow but they're trying to improve that. Yay!

I post the same review in GR as I do Booklikes. Maybe at some point i'll just stick with one but right now it's easier to just cut & paste.

message 265: by Angie Elle, BaBAMB!!! (new)

Angie Elle (angieelle) | 696 comments Man. What happened to editing? Almost every single self-published book I read uses 'past' and 'passed' incorrectly. It's so prevalent that I had to look them up to see if it was my mistake. It wasn't.

I don't know why this frustrates me so much.

message 266: by Crystal (new)

Crystal Navarro (kanarenee) I have been so busy the last couple of weeks it's been insane. I've been traveling a lot for work and then working extra days. I've fallen behind on my reading, on my GR groups (sorry guys... I do love you), on cleaning, and on my quality time with my loved ones.

I feel drained lol

What is this booklikes? I've tried opening a few of your pages and it takes forever to load on my computer...

message 267: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments BookLikes is a blogging site where readers can review books. It's a little different to Goodreads in that there is no real social networking although I read a post from someone who seems to be associated with the site who said that with the influx from GR they were considering introducing forums.

It's all about a decision made by GR to ban reviewers from commenting on author behavior.

message 268: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Crystal, if you want to skip reading more than 1000 posts on the topic, this one sums it up pretty well.

Layali (lallouch) | 8 comments It started raining here, it seems winter is starting early :-) i've read a lot of posts here about booklikes lately, i want to check it out but i'm afraid having two places where i have to see and tag books will confuse me lol, but, i'll give it a look just for back up in case GR messes things up.

Enjoy the rest of your vacation! Loved camping when we were younger but now we get a hotel room :D

message 275: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments Oh camping is fun. It's nice to get away from the everyday.

We're going to Olympic Village in Tahoe in two weeks. Looks like they already have snow and I wasn't expecting that. So I better get the boys new snow shoes. lol! This is our last week of school before Fall break and I can't wait! I hope to take them to Apple Hill next week too.

Vanessa Eden Patton (vanessaeden) | 108 comments That sounds fun! We went to our state national park. It was nice. We were out alone and it was very rugged and romantic. I hope u have fun!

message 278: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) Just turned a new twitter follower onto the Fever series. I love social media for that. Getting to share old favs and find new ones with people all over the world. It's staggeringly cool.

message 279: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments ha ha...camping...lying down in the dirt and sleeping with bugs! I've had enough of that to last a lifetime. I do still occasionally sleep rough....just a year ago I was staying at a Ryokan in Japan and I wasn't happy with the futon so I unrolled my sleeping bag. I felt like toasting marshmallows but the heating vents weren't hot enough.

I know a lot of people love the snow, but I can't deal with the cold. I can't even look at snow on TV. I think an deck chair on the beach with a good book and a Bloody Mary is kind of perfect.

Vanessa Eden Patton (vanessaeden) | 108 comments sorry I hit the wrong button on my phone I meant to say : DOES any one know where you can have a book published about your love story for an anniversary present?

message 282: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments Can;t you publish ebooks on amazon? I don't know if there is a cost... Worth a try. First you'd have to write the story. Do you have it written, Vanessa?

message 283: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments Vanessa...maybe try smashwords? Have you written a story already?

message 284: by Vanessa Eden (new)

Vanessa Eden Patton (vanessaeden) | 108 comments I have started it, its very short because it is supposed to be a private gift. kind of like a childrens book but about our love story. I have not tried smashwords...going to look on it now.

message 285: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments You can make books with pictures from Snapfish or sites like that. That may be an easier route for you.

message 286: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments I've seen picture books about life events before. My sister has one that's specialized about her adoption. So, I'm sure there's a place that'll do it.

message 287: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments As Leea mentioned....Snapfish. I've seen them, they're pretty good quality.

message 288: by Peggyzbooksnmusic (new)

Peggyzbooksnmusic Have been gone most of the weekend but just wanted to pop in to say that Lisa and I got together for lunch and browsing used bookstore on Friday. Was so fun! She is such a sweetie!

She and her hubby were flying back home today so she will probably check in here when she gets a chance. She had a difficult time accessing Goodreads from their laptop at the hotel.

A quick note on our weather. Not sure if you've been to Carlsbad in June but the coast is know for "June Gloom"! Sometimes it actually rains in June and some days the sun never comes out unless you're about 5 miles inland (closer to where I live). People are always shocked when it isn't sunny and warm here everyday! And there's always the chance of a heatwave, so best to check the weather online a few days before you pack :D

message 297: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments Ahhh! Not good. We were hoping for some sun after a long cold winter, or at least that what i bet we'll have.

I think our resort is close to the ocean, we're staying at two. Seaside and Hilton. I'd have to check, thanks for the heads us Peggy!

message 298: by Peggyzbooksnmusic (new)

Peggyzbooksnmusic I'm not sure where Seaside is but Hilton is very close to the coast, in fact I think it might be right across from Carlsbad State Park (a campground) that is on the bluffs above the ocean.

Will be thinking positive thoughts for you to the "weather gods"! lol!
