That book was like a pillow fight....if the pillows were bags of cement. Loved that book but it was emotionally challenging.

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments It is beautiful and brilliant, but emotionally tough - but so true. War is not romantic or beautiful, even though it can be portrayed that way. The day to day of war is so ugly and Laini Taylor catches that and shows how it wears the characters down. I cannot wait for the final in this trilogy!

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I am loving Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell (and I love the cover so much now that I understand it).

I am reading The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt and oh goodness it is so good. I forgot how much I love Tartt's writing. She has only published 3 boos -- one every ten years. All of them are very long, so maybe that makes up for it. I am only 15% in, it is absolutely amazing. I never want it to end.

I am also listening to Dear Life Stories by Alice Munro (author just won the pulitzer), I love her writing style too. I am taking a break at 50% to work in the audio of Eleanor and Park.

Tomorrow I file to NYC for work, but will spend the afternoon and evening just walking around. I am meeting DG for dinner! I cannot wait. I also plan to write many many reviews on the flight (short flight 1.5 hours but still).

message 4756: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments I love the E&P cover too. The words and cover is what pushed me to get it in hardcover. It's pretty.

I also finished Ashes to Ashes (Experiment in Terror, #8) by Karina Halle .

Reading Too Stupid to Live (Romancelandia #1) by Anne Tenino with Leea and loving it!

Have a super fun dinner, you two! Regina, are you going to catch any shows there?

message 4758: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Unfortunately no, I am traveling for work. I just found out last week that I am going and on Thursday I have a deposition. I am flying in tomorrow and my plane lands at 12:30 NYC time and then in the evening after dinner I need to prepare for the dep. So, I am really limited as to what I can do! :(

I plan to spend the afternoon walking around greenwich village, my hotel is in midtown (I think that is what it is) near Central Park as that is near where I have to go on Thursday. I purposely booked a later flight on Thursday, I hope to walk around and have dinner in the city if we get done not too late before I fly out.

That looks excellent! I hate that its $8 on Kindle but story-wise, sounds right up my alley so may need to suck it up.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments 8 bucks is crazy expensive for an indie or small pub. If you charged half that, you'd probably get more than twice the sales, making up the difference in price and then some.

Finished The Professional Part 1 (The Game Maker, #1) by Kresley Cole and it was super cheesy and cliched (like other Cole books I've read), but I really liked it anyway. How could I not with a hot Russian bodyguard type? We all know my weakness for those protective Russian men. :p

I realized as I was reading The Professional that my insane love for Dimitri Belikov (and any man like him) has to date back to my first experience with this type of character in The Nutcracker Prince by Rebecca Winters . I read and re-read that book so many times when I was younger. I really need to find my copy or get a new one and read it again, especially since it's a Christmas book.

Anyway, speaking of Christmas books, I started North Pole Reform School by Jaimie Admans and it looks like it might be cute.

Anna (Bobs Her Hair) @Stacia

I have the Professional, but haven't read it yet. I love Cole's cheese, so this book must be a sure thing. ;)

It's rare to see a Russian hero. I think Lora Leigh has one in a special ops series. There are a couple of historical with R heroes, such as, Victoria Alexander and Johanna Lindsay. Once upon a time I loved the Lindsay book, then I tried to re-read a few months ago. Not historically accurate and then some. My tastes have changed.

I just read Off the Edge (The Associates, #2) by Carolyn Crane and loved it. A linguist operative and singer against illegal arms dealer and crime bosses. What's not to love. Then there's Carolyn Crane's special twists in her characterizations. Good stuff!

Oh that's awesome! I have this ARC waiting for me to read and I can't wait!

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Anna, sometimes you have to just embrace the cheese. A few authors I'll let slide. She's probably one of them.

Tellulah, I haven't. I'm sort of nervous to. The opinions are all over the place but my pickier friends absolutely hated the first book. I wonder if Cole's style of "in your face" males might be too much for a YA series, when many YA readers are much harder on romance hero stereotypes than the mainstream romance crowd.

It is expensive, which is odd. Even the paperback seems expensive to me, but at least it's a physical book.

It's so worth it though, it was AWESOME!

I read book 1, Ian. Off the Edge (#2) can be read as a stand alone. It's a different mission with different players.

message 4776: by Ian (last edited Dec 18, 2013 03:06PM) (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments m/m always makes me uncomfortable...I read them every now and then because it's good to feel uncomfortable. Have any of you ever read f/f? Santa Olivia was pretty special but I wouldn't class it as ff even though the main character was in an ff relationship. I've never read a proper lesbian love story.

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) Ian wrote: "m/m always makes me uncomfortable...I read them every now and then because it's good to feel uncomfortable. Have any of you ever read f/f? Santa Olivia was pretty special but I wouldn't class it..."

The only f/f I've read was really bad erotica. I'd be interested in reading an f/f book that was more relationship based. And had something resembling well defined characters. :D Will check out Santa Olivia.

message 4778: by Leea, Escape Artist (last edited Dec 18, 2013 03:53PM) (new)

Leea | 1437 comments I feel the same way, Tellulah. I haven't read a good f/f... I'll have to check that out Ian.

I can understand how it might make you uncomfortable. I personally have to break up my m/m books. Sometimes if you don't get an author with depth it can feel superficial or just about sex. I also feel that was with some traditional romance. But Too Stupid to Live (Romancelandia #1) by Anne Tenino blew all the other m/m books out of the water. It was that good!

Anna, i'm going to start Off the Edge (The Associates, #2) by Carolyn Crane after Secret.

Ian, I think you should read the first book in the Associate series. I personally liked Against the Dark (The Associates, #1) by Carolyn Crane and it sets up the whole world. I still need to read Mr. Real (Code of Shadows, #1) by Carolyn Crane , which I hear is fantastic!

message 4779: by Peggyzbooksnmusic (new)

Peggyzbooksnmusic Finished 2 Stephanie Plum books: Four to Score (Stephanie Plum, #4) by Janet Evanovich and High Five (Stephanie Plum, #5) by Janet Evanovich So far "High Five" is my favorite in the series. Lots of Morelli and now more backstory to Ranger! Just started Hot Six (Stephanie Plum, #6) by Janet Evanovich Think I'm getting addicted to this series!

Also finished Murder on Washington Square (Gaslight Mystery, #4) by Victoria Thompson which is #4 in a historical mystery series. I've enjoyed this series and will probably read more in the series in 2014.

message 4780: by Anna (Bobs Her Hair) (last edited Dec 18, 2013 05:11PM) (new)

Anna (Bobs Her Hair) Santa Olivia (Santa Olivia, #1) by Jacqueline Carey was very good! The f/f focuses on the emotions, not the sex, which isn't overly descriptive.

I need to review some books before they fade from my mind. THEN, I will read Secret (Elemental, #4) by Brigid Kemmerer ! Has anyone read it yet? Was it really good?

And Carolyn crane's first book sets up the Association series, but she covers it's purpose in #2. It's always tricky deciding whether a book can stand alone when one has read the series in order.

message 4781: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments M/M, for me, runs the same as most contemporary romances. I find that they can easily be very generic and I am bored. I don't dislike them enough to quit, but in the end I feel a bit lackluster about them. Occasionally I'll read one that will blow me away, like TSTL.

I haven't read a FF book yet, though I have a few on my to read list. I'm nervous because I'm naturally harder and more easily annoyed with the female characters in books. I feel like, at least for me, it's easier for authors to lack originality in girls for some strange reason. So, I'm nervous that it'll be two characters that bug me.

message 4782: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Off the Edge (The Associates, #2) by Carolyn Crane

I've already started Book 2 so I'll probably just keep going and double back to book 1 later. I'm glad the the H is wearing a shirt on the cover, shirtless models on covers really sh_t me...as much as cover models who do that holding of pistol like a gangsta thing

message 4783: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I am actually sad to hear Santa Olivia is not overly descriptive. Have you noticed that m/m romance is slightly mainstream and so many UF books have the m/my side story. But f/f is a rarity.

Anna, I read and really liked Secret. Not just the Nick story, which I'd been looking forward to, but Quinn's as well. I think I liked it even more than Nick's. I think she is the strongest of all the female characters in this series. And the characterization of who she gets caught up with was really great to see as well. Let me know what you think.

message 4786: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) Finished Succubus on Top (Georgina Kincaid, #2) by Richelle Mead Aside from a bit of "come on Scooby Doo, you should be able to spot a supernatural mystery a bit faster", I liked this book even better than the first one. I love Seth and I'm enjoying being surprised by where Mead takes the story. I can't see how there is possibly an HEA in store for these two but I'm more than happy to hope and keep going along for the ride.

message 4787: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments for me, f/f just doesn't work - but m/m does...but I am totally burnt out on it right now and hardly read anything recently

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments I go back to f/f being better for me because I like the option of being able to relate/insert myself into a story. With m/m, I'll always be on the outside looking in, so to speak.

Interesting enough though, it seems like most f/f is either literary fic (like Sarah Waters), alternative high fantasy, or erotica. There isn't a lot of regular romance featuring it.

That said, I probably should give a few more m/m books a shot. I still haven't read any which have blown me away. There have been a few I've liked, but not necessarily any better than mainstream lit when it comes down to the actual story.

Regina wrote: "I am actually sad to hear Santa Olivia is not overly descriptive. Have you noticed that m/m romance is slightly mainstream and so many UF books have the m/my side story. But f/f is a rarity."

There are a few sex scenes. It's not an erotica or heavy-duty type of sex scene, but there is a nice amount of intimacy shown.

I think the tortured connection of Seth and Georgina was done so well. I felt their emotions and had sympathy for their struggles.

Books 4 through 6 are my favorite, so you're in for some good times ahead.

message 4789: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments maybe try bold strokes books for some f/f - but like Regina noted, most f/f i've come across is either literary, coming of age (so behind closed doors) or complete PWP

Book three was okay but I'm two chapters in to book 4 and it's killing me!

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Book 4 has the office scene! It's one of my favorite scenes.

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) Oooh, that sounds promising. :D My heart is breaking for her and Seth. But destructive behaviour always good for a read.

message 4793: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Thanks Stacia, I will look into it. I really want to read it. I need to make time. I like literary fiction, so that is okay with me. Obviously I need to work my way through Sarah Waters back list.

Tellulah so glad you are enjoying the Succubus seris!!

I had fun meeting DG in person. We had cocktails, dinner and then a nightcap. It was fun. :D She is just as vivacious in real life as you likely imagine.

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments Sounds so fun, Regina!

I haven't had much time to read lately. I've been Xmas shopping and preparing for my holiday party with friends & kids tomorrow.

So, I'm still working on Days of Blood & Starlight (Daughter of Smoke & Bone, #2) by Laini Taylor and I'm about 50ish% into it. All these characters make me nervous(view spoiler)

message 4796: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) Finished the Succubus series and loved it! I'd been doubting book 5, thinking (view spoiler) but the scope of everything that came back into play to wrap things up was fabulous. And I'm so glad that Georgina didn't do anything bone-headed to make me stop liking her.

But I think I have a reading headache and need to walk away from books for a couple of days. :P
