Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments I finished up The Time Between - this is going to be very close to a 5 star read...I need to ponder a bit more, I loved it - review will probably be up over the weekend

message 3902: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments Thanks Dee :) Hmmm... There are so many books I want to read but not enough time. Some of you may understand my plight. haha!

message 3903: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments while they are longer, I found them to be decently fast reads - they weren't all that drawn out - I think the christmas one was probably the most so far...book 3 (When Summer Comes) was my favorite so far - I'm reading book 4 right now then starts the waiting game for next year

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Leea wrote: "Do you like that Whiskey Creek series Ian? How does it compare to Virgin River? "

I'm really liking this story, but honestly the series is hit and miss.

I think Whiskey Creek is like oysters with lemon and ginger vinaigrette. They're pretty good, but every now and then you'll get a bad one and when you do, you'll definitely regret it.

Virgin River is more like a really good cheeseburger. Good but hey, it's a cheeseburger. How can you go wrong with a cheeseburger?

lol...Whiskey Creek. I'm in the mood for oysters!

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments Whereas I hate Mel in VC and can't read the books because she just pisses me off too much and they feel too preachy - kinda like when you (to use Ian's analogy) bite into something thinking its a cheeseburger but its a black bean burger instead - something supposedly good/heathy disguised as a treat

message 3906: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments lol...Mel is Veggie Burger. I didn't mind Mel...but I think I read Virgin River after I'd already read 5 or 6 books. I was just looking at the synopsis and choosing books I thought I'd like and finally decided to have a look at the first book.

message 3907: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments Blank bean burger - I actually don't mind good veggie burgers but nothing can improve a BB burger

message 3908: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments This is a fantastic conversation!! Thanks to both of you for all your input! Lol! I love oysters & black bean veggie burgers but there's nothing like big juicy burger!!

message 3909: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) I'm re-reading Bitten (Women of the Otherworld, #1) by Kelley Armstrong It drags a bit more than I remember, but Clay is ever bit as psychopathically fabulous. I'm kind of worried, with the series set to start in January, about if they'll pull off the characters in a way that feels true to who they are in the book.

message 3910: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments I really liked that book. Never read the rest of the series... haha!

message 3911: by Ian (last edited Oct 18, 2013 01:46PM) (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Dee wrote: "nothing can improve a BB burger "

Tabasco sauce can improve anything. lol...it can even improve an Australian Army Ration Pack. We call them Rat Packs which seems a little unfair to rats. They along with most vermin wouldn't touch them.
But they do serve a purpose. If you run out of bullets, you throw a ration pack at the enemy and hope they eat it.

BTW...Tabasco Sauce on Ice Cream is good...like Barbara O'Neal. You think this is gonna be bad but in the end the sweet somehow manages to balance the burn perfectly.

message 3912: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments I'm going to trust you on that...

message 3913: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments I love the food comparisons between Whiskey Creek and Virgin River :) I only read the first Whiskey Creek book and thought it was okay. I remember that the sex was more "fade to black" and I usually like my CRs with a little more steam. VR can come across preachy but that doesn't bother me. When I read VR, it's like coming home which reminds me that I still need to get back and finish this series.

message 3914: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments I finished The Tenderfoot Bride by Cheryl St.John which was a light and quick American Historical. I'm sticking with this genre for my next read A Taste Of Heaven by Alexis Harrington .

message 3915: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I don't think VR is preachy at all. It definitely is very family and natural birthing positive but that isn't the same as preachy. For me, it is so refreshing to see that in a romance novel or fiction period, b/c it just never is, that I love that it is present. There are so many romances without references to birth or babies that this is a standout, which is one of the reasons I love the series.

Once the books stopped being about Clay and Elena, I stopped reading them. She shouldn't have strayed away.

message 3917: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Speaking of coming home....have you ever noticed that in book titles? Take me home for christmas, bring me home for christmas, home for christmas.
It's like Always on my Mind...there are like a dozen books with that title.

Must be so hard to come up with an original title these days.

message 3918: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments It is such a popular theme. Robyn Carr writes it every Christmas. :D I guess actually, all of her books have that theme.

message 3919: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments For me with VR after the first book it just felt like natural birth/Mel's way or the hwy was the theme aka Mel knows best...plus I was disappointed with her other series (the wanderer) when book 2 was supposed to be about one couple and it ended up more continuation of the first book

message 3920: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments The Wanderer is very disappointing.

I don't think Mel was that way at all, how I read it is she advocated for natural birth but there are characters who get c-sections and who get pain meds and they are not criticized at all.

message 3921: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Yeah...the book titles for the Thunderpoint series are bizarre.

message 3922: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments Maybe I just didn't go far enough in VR then because it just left me feeling ehhh and I read the first two

message 3923: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Dee wrote: "Maybe I just didn't go far enough in VR then because it just left me feeling ehhh and I read the first two"

Mel actually moves into the background after the first three...and she's hardly even a character in some of the more recent books. Personal opinion: I think VR has been feeling a little tired over the past four or five books. I'm trying to think what the shark jumping moment was...maybe when Walt (from Summer in Sonoma) showed up in Virgin River astride his motorcycle.

Samantha | 419 comments Dee wrote: "For me with VR after the first book it just felt like natural birth/Mel's way or the hwy was the theme aka Mel knows best...plus I was disappointed with her other series (the wanderer) when book 2 ..."

Mel does tone it down and is in the background but earlier she was all in the way and annoying. I agree. I forgot where I stopped at in the series but after a while, I got tired of them.

message 3925: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments I personally love Mel... But I think I understand her and what she went through. I loved these books but i'm a mom and i'm used to talking about birthing and babies. lol!

I still haven't finished the series, I stopped at 17 or so...

message 3926: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I love Mel too. :)

message 3927: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments There is such a great feeling you get when reading VR. I just loved them. I read the first 6 while on vacation a few years ago and it was awesome!

I haven't had much time to read and it sucks. I finished one book this week. ugh! I'm running my first 1/2 marathon this weekend and i'm starting to get really nervous.

message 3928: by Angie Elle, BaBAMB!!! (new)

Angie Elle (angieelle) | 696 comments You can do it, Leea!

message 3929: by Peggyzbooksnmusic (new)

Peggyzbooksnmusic Wow, Leea! Good luck on your upcoming 1/2 marathon! Go girl!

message 3930: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 419 comments I stopped after book 17.

You can do it, Leea

message 3931: by Ian (last edited Oct 18, 2013 07:43PM) (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Running is meditation. Don't even think about finishing, just enjoy the moment. The finish line is just one moment in thousands of moments.

lol ... I went all zen on you.

message 3932: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments Thanks Ian... because i'm starting to get all tense and my shoulders are all tight. It sucks! I'm just going to have fun. *mantra* I'm running with my good friend and at least she's ran this race a few times in the past. Running through the streets of SF is going to be fun.

message 3933: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments Sounds like a title for a TV series - 'Running thru the Streets of S.F.'! Wasn't there a show with Michael Douglas back in the 70s called something line The Streets of S.F.? Or something like that? I'd probably trip and fall trying to run thru that beautiful city. Kinda like cross-country skiing in Yosemite - I was constantly falling on my butt because I kept looking up at the gorgeous mountains. Plus, I was just learning...but still!

They're making The Otherworld into a show?! I've read the whole series so far and love it. At first I didn't like the 2nd book because it had SO many new characters and all I cared about was Clay and Elena but later I grew to love all the characters. Plus, see the progression of Clay and Elena's relationship. I like Armstrong's world-building now.

message 3934: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments Lisa wrote: "They're making The Otherworld into a show?!..."

Oh, I didn't know that. That will be fun. I'll have to pick up book 2 and keep reading.

message 3935: by Leea, Escape Artist (last edited Oct 19, 2013 12:10PM) (new)

Leea | 1437 comments I started reading, The Mountain Between Us by Cindy Myers , i've read a few chapters and i'm enjoying the small town feel. But there are quite a few characters. It's not confusing but I don't know who the main story is about yet, I have an idea who it is. There are also a few pregnant woman... haha!

We started a new family book a few days ago, excited to read Little House in the Big Woods (Little House, #1) by Laura Ingalls Wilder with my boys. It's been so long since i've read it. They're enjoying it so much, most nights they fall asleep while i'm reading. ha!

message 3936: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Lisa wrote: "Wasn't there a show with Michael Douglas back in the 70s called something line The Streets of S.F.?"

ha ha, there was. I loved that show. I always associate The Streets of San Francisco with Quincy because that was the Tuesday night double bill.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments My internet goes down for a day and I miss a lot of conversation.

I don't read much of that style of contemp though, so I probably wouldn't have anything to contribute anyway.

Finished American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis and it was hands down the sickest book I have ever read. All of the kidnap/non con stuff I've read in the past looks like child's play now.

message 3938: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I love Little House. :)

American Psycho is freaky. Have you seen the movie?

I am listening to The Interestings by Meg Wolitzer , I finished Bellwether by Connie Willis and loved it. It is really short and ended up being a science nerd romance - with no sex and a lot of build up. I did not expect that. I thought it was funny, especially about working for a corporation, but it definitely isn't for everyone.

message 3939: by Angie Elle, BaBAMB!!! (new)

Angie Elle (angieelle) | 696 comments I am reading The Forever of Ella and Micha (The Secret, #2) by Jessica Sorensen and To Love A Wolf by B.K. Walker .

message 3940: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) Still having reading ADD... can't seem to read more than a few chapters of any one book before I put it down and pick up another. Started Behind the Shattered Glass (Lady Emily, #8) by Tasha Alexander , the newest Lady Emily book. Also have the hard back of A Bad Day for Mercy A Crime Novel by Sophie Littlefield . My mom thinks she might like to read the Stella books…

GO, LEEA! Can't wait to hear about your marathon experience.

I have and I like the movie, whereas I hated the book, which is a rare switch.

I still have to brave the fourth and fifth book from the series.

I am reading a very strange book, Cafe Insomniac, about an insomniac who opened a cafe and all kinds of strange things start happening.

message 3944: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments Just finished Bold Tricks (The Artists Trilogy, #3) by Karina Halle - verra good even if it was a bit over the top in some places but great action scenes. I think Halle does well in that area. Plus her sex scenes are pretty steamy. A great popcorn book :D AND, one of my crazy theories I had but never voiced after reading #2, came true. Although, it was that crazy and probably many readers predicted the same thing LOL. But my other crazy theory didn't happen which was a relief, not that it would really matter.

I'm still rereading (listening) to Shadow of Night (All Souls Trilogy, #2) by Deborah Harkness with Peggy Z and Ladyhawke. But now I need another book and trying to figure out which one of my many TBRs.

message 3945: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Lisa what were your crazy theories?

message 3946: by Angie Elle, BaBAMB!!! (new)

Angie Elle (angieelle) | 696 comments I am about to start His Mortal Angel by Jinni James , and I'll be following it up with The Temptation of Lila and Ethan (The Secret, #3) by Jessica Sorensen .

message 3948: by Peggyzbooksnmusic (new)

Peggyzbooksnmusic Being lazy and replying in one post! :D

Lisa, I'm still reading SON but baseball playoffs have slowed down my reading pace!

Ian, Loved "Quincy"! Jack Klugman (spelling?) has always been one of my fav actors; he was also great in the TV version of "The Odd Couple".

Leea, Enjoy your read of "Little House in the Big Woods" with your boys! Those were my fav books as a young girl.

Lori, Your post reminded me that I have And Only to Deceive (Lady Emily, #1) by Tasha Alexander on Kindle. Looks like a good series!

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

message 3949: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments As to the one that turned out to be right - I had the same theory. I think Halle was dropping clues. That was a great storyline.

Lisa | 383 comments Regina wrote: "As to the one that turned out to be right - I had the same theory. I think Halle was dropping clues. That was a great storyline."

It sure was! I figured there was a reason I came up with those with all the hints because I'm usually bad at figuring out mysteries.

Peggy - we watched the game between Boston and Detroit last night - what a game! My SIL who lives near Boston has seasons tickets and goes to more Super Bowls and playoffs than anybody I know. Boston has good teams. Seattle - meh. Although the Seahawks this year looks promising :D And the Mariners did really well, going to the playoffs when the kids were young and into baseball. We went to a lot of their games. So I'm up to chapter 20 now on Shadow of Night. Trying to slow my pace down by reading other books. Ended up picking Smokin' Seventeen (Stephanie Plum, #17) by Janet Evanovich
