Leea, it was Up to the Challenge by Terri Osburn. It's not really a gripe and maybe women see things differently but something I notice with other authors is when the guy acts like a Jack-Ass, the woman often forgives him too easily. She's only written two books but I'm yet to get that with Terri Osburn. They're the contemporary romance version of Mama Bear's Porridge.

Lisa, for me there is no real difference between 5 and 4 Stars....at least not in the quality of the book. The main difference is in how I respond to it. With a 5 Star book there is an extra, maybe emotional, connection to the book.

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Ian -- I am starting to wish Written in Blood would speed up. I like the story a lot, but I would cut out 1/3 of the writing. It is funny, I didn't feel that way for the first 60%.

message 3853: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments Ian - I believe that's how I differentiate between a 4 and 5 star book also - the emotional tie. For some reason, and it could be hormonal, a lot of books get me emotionally, where I really connect to some part of the book. Or maybe I chose a lot of books that set me off, I don't know. If a book doesn't look that interesting, I don't bother picking it up.

That's good to know. I read that Stevens is working on book 4 so I'm not sure about rushing to read #3 when I finish #2. I hate the wait, especially if there's cliffhangers. But usually that feeling goes away when I get wrapped up in another book/series.

Samantha | 419 comments Don't rush but I don't remember any cliff hangers.

Leea | 1437 comments I'm reading Through the Smoke by Brenda Novak and i'm really enjoying it. I love that this miners daughter has educated herself and it not a one dimensional character. She's not looking to get married, or at least she seems more options than that. The romance is very hot but not too graphic... I'm just pleasantly surprised by this book!

Still reading Outlander, but I needed to get a few arcs out of the way.

Happy Monday everyone!!

message 3857: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a good weekend. I finished The Sum of All Kisses (Smythe-Smith Quartet, #3) by Julia Quinn which isn't the best by Quinn.

I also started and will finish Nobody's Girl by Sarra Manning sometime this morning. I love Sarra Manning and I'm actually reading an actual tangible book *gasp* just b/c this book isn't available in ebook.

I'm just at 60% and have started feeling the same. It's like the author is world building, but she's spending so much time on the color of the dirt that we aren't being given the important stuff.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Finished Last Night at the Viper Room River Phoenix and the Hollywood He Left Behind by Gavin Edwards and my heart was all over the place. I was shocked and horrified to find out some of what happened in River's childhood. But by the time I was finished reading, my main feeling was one of regret for not getting to see what kind of man he would have become.

This is not a spoiler. Anyone can click it. I'm just hiding this because it's a big pic and quote. Sigh. Feels.

Starting Parasite (Parasitology, #1) by Mira Grant with Wendy.

I really want to read Viper Room. I was such a River fan and it was so shocking and surreal to me when I learned of his death. I feel the same way, regret for not getting to see who he would have become.

message 3862: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) Good to know about The Sum of All Kisses (Smythe-Smith Quartet, #3) by Julia Quinn , Kay - I'll borrow it from the library.

Finished Rough Canvas (Nature of Desire, #6) by Joey W. Hill by Joey W. Hill - in the Nature of Desire series. It's book 6, but I just couldn't read book 5 Mistress of Redemption (Nature of Desire, #5) by Joey W. Hill . Whoever said it was weird was RIGHT. I only read the first couple of chapters, and it reminded me of the song "Hotel California" - a nightmare of some sort.

Have a lot of reviews to catch up on here, not to mention at Booklikes.

HAS THE OUTLANDER RE-READ/BUDDY READ STARTED YET? Or is that Nov 1st?

Leea | 1437 comments That's beautiful Stacia!

I'm an auntie!!! My niece, Emily Mae was born this afternoon. My SIL pushed for 6 hrs, ended up having a csection. She looks like she went 15 rounds, her eyes have broken blood vesicles. She's here & healthy but it's been a long day.

message 3864: by Lori (new)

I haven't read that Brenda Novak yet - but she emailed me about reviewing her newest Whiskey Creek book - contemp romance/bordering on Women's Lit - it was pretty good - i'm going back and reading the rest of the series now - although they can kinda stand on their own

Congratulations! Sounds like a long day but I know how that is. Both of my kids took forever to come. Glad to hear that she came through okay.

He's one of the true standouts in my mind from that time period.

I'm sort of reading bits and pieces of 3 books at the moment. I'd mentioned Parasite already (OMG..NO to engineered tapeworms), but I'm also starting these two as well. Psycho is for a different buddy read.
American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis Allegiant (Divergent, #3) by Veronica Roth

I'll have to look into that series. I really love her writing style.

message 3877: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments So I am reading The History of Love by Nicole Krauss for my in real life book club and am really enjoying it. I never would have picked it up on my own. I do love literary fiction and I tend to read the award winners and nominees that this author has won, but something about it would have put me off but I am so glad I am reading it.

I also started Bellwether by Connie Willis -- not sure what to think. I am listening to the audio and it is funny so far.

Congrats, Aunt Leea! Love the name Emily Mae! Hope your SIL has a quick recovery from her C-section.

message 3879: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments Congrats Auntie Leea! How many nieces and nephews do you have now?

I just finished book 3 of The Graveyard Queen series, The Prophet (Graveyard Queen, #3) by Amanda Stevens and Samantha is right - a verra good series. Can't wait for book 4! I've heard that the audio is excellent and now I want to take a listen to hear that lovely Charleston accent.

message 3880: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments I have one Niece from my brother, Emily and an older Niece on my husbands side. I have one nephew. My BIL"s are just married so I hope many more to come...

I got to hold Emily for the first time today and it was amazing! I got to help my SIL nurse her for the first time, she did great! Not much reading again today because I spent most of it at the hospital with them.

Still reading and enjoying Through the Smoke Its very good and not your usual HR.

message 3883: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments I'm reading an American historical The Tenderfoot Bride by Cheryl St.John on my new paperwhite!

Another kindle question: Is there a sleep timer I can set or does it automatically go to sleep after X amount of minutes of no activity? My Nook had this in the settings but I can't find it for the kindle. I fall asleep reading sometimes so I'm just wondering if it has this option.

Thanks Lori. I emailed a bunch of books to my kindle email address before I received it so it was nice that it automatically downloaded to my kindle when I turned on the WiFi. It was super easy.

message 3885: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Kay I never have had a timer on my kindles but I don't have a paper white. If you are worried about the battery - I wouldn't. My batteries for my kindles last awhile. Just make sure the wifi/3G is turned off before you read for the night. :)

message 3886: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments Mine goes to sleep after so long of no use, Kay. Not white screen off, but the screen saver comes on. Your battery should work well though, if you keep it on airplane mode when you're not getting online.

message 3887: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments I remember liking that feature with the Nook but, Kindles just go to sleep or the screen turns off when not in use.

I have a question about ebook library lending... I've been borrowing books from the library for Ethan (who's using my older kindle touch now) but when they say the book has expired, it's still on the reader? Not that i'm complaining just curious is that normal. I keep renewing the book so now i've got a few copies on there. I didn't realize the book would still remain after it expiring?

message 3888: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments It will until you turn on the wifi/3G.

message 3889: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments Thanks, everyone! I did fall asleep reading last night and when I woke up, the kindle was on sleep. So, I'm glad it didn't stay on the whole time.

message 3891: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Just started Her Own Devices by Shelley Adina. Cute, very short Steam Punk novel. Am nearly finished Take me Home for Christmas by Brenda Novak. It's pretty good.

Her Own Devices (Magnificent Devices, #2) by Shelley Adina Take Me Home for Christmas (Whiskey Creek, #5) by Brenda Novak

Do you think holiday themed books are novelties? I mean, do you take them less seriously than the regular books by an author? Seems to me that a lot of authors will write a couple of regular books a year and one holiday season book.

message 3892: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments I've read a few holiday themed novellas that are part of a series but didn't seem too critical to the storyline. I've also read a few holiday themed books, like The Stupidest Angel A Heartwarming Tale of Christmas Terror by Christopher Moore that helped when I was feeling anti-holidayish (bah humbug).

Finally! Have started Bold Tricks (The Artists Trilogy, #3) by Karina Halle today. Can't wait to see how this all shakes out.

message 3900: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments Leea - i'll weigh in on Virgin River vs Whiskey Creek - I've only read 2 VR books (the first two), but the WC ones doesn't have the preachy quality that I found VR to have...they are also significantly long...they remind me more of Toni Blake's Destiny series - but not as smexy
