Debbie Krumme I thought they did a great job with the movie up until the changed the ending. I think that Jamie acting was right on, but no physically he is off. However, some of the more physically correct actors they thought about, I don't think could have pulled off the emotion. Once I was into the story, the contrast didn't seem to matter so much. I'd rather have the better actor.

message 303: by Erica (new) - rated it 5 stars

Erica Cornell Jamie Campbell bower is perfect for that role. He turely brings out the charcter of Jace. After i watched the movie and i'm re-reading the books i totally see Jamie Campbell Bower as Jace. But i'm not like most people books are my life so i might be wrong. But i think i'm right. My oppion.

Serena ♡ I LOVE JAMIE!! I think that he is the best Jace!

message 305: by Teresa (new) - added it

Teresa Why do yo say that EVERYONE HATES Jamie Campbell Bower playing Jace? How do you EVERYONE HATES him playing Jace?
I don't. I thought Jamie playing Jace was GREAT. Besides, we don't know how Alex Pettyfer playng Jace would have been, so I say just enjoy Mortal Instruments anyway.

message 306: by Anzen (new) - rated it 2 stars

Anzen I don't hate him. It's just that Jace's personality in the film was not I've imagined him to be his personality in the book. Jace's personality in the film is, I don't know, dull? While in the book, he's like a bright star.

message 307: by Shy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Shy I do not like him for Jace. He doesn't have the look.

Ugh he's definitely not attractive.

Rebecca Because they're too shy to admit he's a HOTTIE!!!

message 310: by Kendra (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kendra Ayrey AMEN!! @Rebecca!!! I was unsure of him when he was first cast, as I was with all the cast members, because I wanted everything to be PERFECT, as we all do, obviously.

After I have watched the movie, I fell in love with him. He is just perfect for the role, and had me swooning for him throughout the movie. I even pictured him as jade in the last book, and as I was reading, he was playing Jace in my head. It was fantastic.
Did i mention that I'm in love with him? :)

message 311: by Hope (new) - rated it 5 stars

Hope S In my opinion, JCB is the perfect Jace. His acting is impeccable and I feel his really understood the character and how to portray him. Physical attractiveness isn't all that matter in the casting of a character, better acting is more important than physical appearance, and I do not believe Alex Pettyfer is a strong enough actor to be able to pulled of the emotion that Jamie did nor Jace's sarcasm and mannerisms.

(Although in saying that, I personally do find Jamie to be easily attractive enough to be Jace, but I know many others don't.)

message 312: by Maddie (new) - rated it 5 stars

Maddie Bradshaw I didn't like Jamie as Jace only because he didn't really fit the character in my opinion. I think everyone has different ideas and images that pop into their mind when they hear the words used to describe Jace so i understand why some people liked Jamie and why some people didn't.

Personally, though I didn't like Jamie because he just wasn't built the same way that I had pictured Jace when reading the books. I pictured him with a bit shorter hair and more muscular.
Also, (and this is also just my own opinion) I didn't think he portrayed Jace the way Jace was written in the books. In the books, Jace seemed quite a bit more aloof and mysterious to me than the way Jamie acted, and the Jace in the books seemed to do everything in a super sexy way and I personally wasn't feeling that from Jamie.

Antonia Childs I think Jamie was great for the part, because in some parts of the movie, you could really see him shine through as Jace. The only thing that I think holds him back, is that Jace is described as basically 'angelic', with the golden everything about him and the fact he was meant to be really handsome. Which pretty much then restricts the amount of actors that could play him.

The one I didn't get in the movie, was why did his turn gold for a second? What was the point/ what was it?

Dawyn.S. Hunter well i actually thought he was a great actor and did his part..yeah yeah he wanst all our ideal Jace but he did his job inst that what we're all tryna do in life...:)

Shut Up, I'm Reading. I dont exactly hate Jamie as Jace, but its just that I pictured him kinda differently. I don't think he's the best person to be playing Jace, but he's not the worst. :) He is really funny though! I've watched a few interviews with his and he's HILARIOUS!!

Ha ha, yeah, Jamie's really funny. Especially in the interviews with Lily or Robert. :)

message 317: by Peyton (last edited Jul 18, 2014 09:37AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Peyton In liked him in the movie when he wasn't acting with Lily Collins. I thought when he was acting with her, it was kind of flat and not very entertaining. If the director or anybody else would have fixed that problem, I think the movie would have been 10 times better than it is.

message 318: by Katie (new) - rated it 5 stars

Katie Hashi I know we all had expectations on Jace and you can say that's not how you pictured him or whatever but I mean come on. Everyone pictures Jace a certain way. I could just as easily say that's not how I pictured Clary because it's not. Clary is supposed to have red orange hair and freckles. That's not to say I don't love Lily Collins as Clary though. I will admit I didn't really picture each actor as their character, but once I saw the movie I loved them. They may not be exactly what I pictured, but they do a pretty fantastic job of being their characters. Just because it's not what we pictured doesn't mean it's not right.

message 320: by Sarah (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sarah Valente Sorry, but Jamie just didn't look or play the part for Jace. I imagined someone a whole lot better looking then him. Jace is one of the hottest boys in YA, and Jamie just disappointed me. It's not just with his looks, but his acting too. I really don't understand the British accent (he isn't Will Herondale). He also seemed too dry and flat in the movie. He didn't have that spark of sarcasm Jace had in the books. I'm not saying he's a bad actor, I just personally feel that he wasn't the right choice.

NoraReads I totally agree with Sarah.

message 322: by Naomi (new) - rated it 5 stars

Naomi Speakman I don't think fans actually hate Jamie himself but the way he portrays Jace, or lack thereof. Jamie is naturally snarky with his witty commentary, and I would've loved to see more of his humour seep into Jace, but there was barely any humour in the movie, which was immensely disappointing. His appearance was nothing like book-Jace, either. His hair was terrible. His speech was dull and robotic. And he sounded as if he were reciting words from a card. I'd seen more emotion when he played Caius in Twilight, and that wasn't a lot.

message 323: by Cindy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Cindy I honestly love Jamie as Jace. Okay well I do have to admit I wasn't happy with his casting when he was first announce but then I realize after I saw the trailer that I was being a complete butt head. I took back whatever that convince that he wasn't great. In fact Jamie as Jace is perfect! I absolutely picture Jace as Jamie when I was reading the rest of the books. I realize that you shouldn't judge one's ability based on their appearances. I mean I wanted Alex to be Jace at first but now I realize how wrong that is. I've seen Jamie in other films/shows and he's a very good actor. Jamie brought out the Jace I read in the books. It upsets me that people hate on the portrayal Jamie brought as Jace but c'mon guys, Jace is a very complicated character and Jamie couldn't bring out all of what Jace was in a two hour movie. I love Jamie as Jace, he's attractive like him, he's funny like him, he's Jace.

message 324: by Mayko (last edited Sep 09, 2014 09:51PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Mayko Bower has a more ruggedly handsome look to him that directly contrasts the almost too pretty to be on the runway pretty boy type of attractiveness that readers were lead to believe (over and over again) that Jace possesses. Bower's portrayal of Jace also contained a smidge too much vulnerability and not nearly enough bravado for me to feel it was convincing.

message 325: by [deleted user] (new)

I really liked him as Jace. He portrayed him rather well and, in my opinion, is definitely hot enough. I mean, Clary points out that Jace is hot and girls just love to stare, so that fact can't really be ignored. ;)Anyway, I thought Jamie Bower was perfect for the role.

Brittain *Needs a Nap and a Drink* I had two main issues with JCB as Jace...The first was that every time I saw him, I would immediately associate him with Sweeney Todd and that creeped me out a bit. The next was the fact that he couldn't figure out how he wanted his voice to sound in this movie. It went from deep to normal to deep and back again.

message 327: by Rachel (new) - added it

Rachel E. Carter I didn't have Jamie, I hated the producers and script writers who ruined Jace in the movie.

Jamie looked mighty fine whenever he had that shadowhunter outfit on with the hood and whenever he was given one of Jace's zingers ("don't worry, it wasn't anything special for me either") -he played up Jace's sarcastic nature perfectly...

That said the rest was just cringe worthy. They made Jamie into too much of a pretty boy and that kiss scene, god, it was terrible. Demi Lovato and a bunch of glowing flowers where Jace romantically holds Clary and kisses her gently. ummmm. wtf. the kiss was supposed to be accidental and instead it got turned into *shivers in terror* Twilight.

Bottom line, Jamie had potential but the script they gave him and the way they portrayed him left me very unsatisfied. They should have left Cassandra in charge, not some producer who clearly never read the book and thinks every YA reader wants to watch a repeat of the disaster that is Twilight instead of what we signed up for which is MORTAL INSTRUMENTS.

message 328: by Jam (new)

Jam I don't think that Jamie is a bad actor at all. He is the perfect character for Jace, apart from the HAIR. It looks cool normally, but it isn't what Jace would have.
And also, on his accent, if you read the Infernal Devices
SPOILER
Will Herondale is British, and all of the Herondales are of British origin. If anything, it just adds more detail into the film.

If you think Jamie is hot, you have really low standards. He looks like a dirty strung-out junkie. There is nothing hot about him.

Jelly224 I don't know If it was just me but, didn't it seem like he didn't want to be there? It was as though he was just going to say these words and get this over with. There was like no emotion or acting, like he was a robot. It was horrible in my opinion.

Madi ~☆TheBookNerdDiaries☆~ Alex Pettyfer turned down the role I believe. I just didn't feel like JCB was Jace.

Kirsten In my opinion, Jamie nailed the part of Jace. I really like the movie (except the ending) especially with JCB in it!!

message 336: by Renee (new) - rated it 5 stars

Renee Runyan I believe the first book is intended to tell of the character Clary learning who she is and how she fits into the world of shadowhunters, as well as her abilities. Yes, the book and movie don't coincide continually, but movies made from books usually differ in some ways. I think Jamie makes an excellent Jace! And, I really don't see Jace being conceited, or really cocky. Jace is supposed to be one of the best shadowhunters and yes, he is a little arrogant I find a little arrogance attractive in a man, as long as it is not overdone. Jamie is great as Jace with just the right amount of self assurance and arrogance. Let's face it ladies, you don't want a guy who doesn't show you that he believes in himself. In his interviews, Jamie presents himself as a guy who is happy with who is (as is Jace); Jamie puts himself into the character of Jace well. Honestly, I definitely do not see anything attractive in Alex Pettyfer. Even in pictures I see of him, I see his cockiness and conceit. He would have made Jace totally intolerable! Jamie Bower is a good actor and musician. If there are to be movies made of each book, I really hope they stick with the original actors or it would really mess things up!

message 337: by Geff (new) - rated it 5 stars

Geff I think he did his part well but I also think they should have selected someone better. He's a little monotonous and emotion-less in my opinion. I can't think of a better actor but I know there's someone out there that's more Jace-esque than Jamie.

Becca I thought he was good, because in the book she describes him as have sharp angels in his face, and I feel Jacob has that quality. And he plays the dick personality of Jace perfectly. Everybody thinks that the guy that played Alec should play Jace but I feel the guy that played Alec was perfect for the part.
Just my opinion. Lol.

message 341: by Renee (new) - rated it 5 stars

Renee Runyan I read so much of about how Jamie does not compare to his character in the book. So many of you feel Alex would have done a better and as I said before...I don't see him as being near as attractive as he thinks he is. He looks way too sure of himself in his photos and very arrogant. And just where is this buff physique of his? I have read a lot of books and many have been made into movies. The movies are very seldom as in depth as the book and therefore, so many complain about the differences of the two. Seldom do the characters of the book look like the actors in the movie. By the time you finish a book, you have the main character looking sooo perfect. I have been disappointed as well (i.e. "Interview With a Vampire.) The movie did not live up to my expectations of a book I became so into that I read it in one day. Contrary so so many, I cannot stand the looks or arrogance of Tom Cruise. The book literally "sucked" me into it; I couldn't even watch the movie. As for TMI, I watched the movie before reading the book. I went into reading the book and found myself totally envisioning the actors as the characters in the book. As for parts of the book left out, well, it was easy to see the actors "filling in" those entries of the book. As for Jace and Clary being siblings, Hodge tells Valentine "If you lie and tell them both they're your children, you will break both of their hearts." Hodge knew they are not siblings. So many people see and hear a movie without ever really noticing what is going on or listening to everything being said. Happy reading and movie watching.

andrea I absolutely love Jamie as Jace

message 343: by Lueniale (last edited Feb 01, 2016 02:30AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lueniale Jamie Campbell Bower was a mistake.

Okay so I've watched the film first before reading the books, so NO, I didn't really know the actual portrayal or any idea of who Jace Wayland from the book vs the Jace from the film before watching the show. Which in my opinion should have been an advantage for JCB since I wouldn't be comparing the Jace from the book vs the Jace from the movie.

So here's the actual picture before I watched the movie, some of my friends and classmates got to see it first, and they all have different opinions about it, some thought it was great, others where just meh, while majority thought it was a complete waste because they think the book is way better than the movie. So I wasn't particularly persuaded to watch it until I realized how oblivious I am for not knowing that the main actress was Lily Colins. I am a fan of her, and yes she's very pretty and I have imagined her face quite often as the main character on some books that I've read. So I wanted to give the movie a shot, and I opted some of my friends to watch it with me but to those who have watched warned us that we wouldn't like the main actor for Lily at all. Still, I gave it a chance...

So here's the reason why it was a mistake he was casted
In my very own honest opinion, I didn't see any sparks or chemistry between the two actors (Lily and JCB) at all. The story tells you that the two characters (Clary and Jace) are supposed to be in love, but somewhere, somehow I just couldn't grasp that idea, I feel it was forced. Or maybe I didn't like the idea of them at all - and no not because of the sudden revelations at the end of the movie (I do like stories with forbidden love - I am very open minded) - but not Jace and Clary from the movie. At some point while watching the show, I ended up rooting for Simon and Clary.

Jace and Clary didn't click at all... I may have a pretty shallow reason as to why they didn't click. I thought maybe it's because Lily is well... too pretty for JCB. I'm not saying JCB isn't good looking, but his looks just couldn't cope up with Lily's and somehow I cringed during their supposed to be romantic kissing scene, which rarely happens to me whenever I watch a romantic movie. I was very disappointed with the casting. I really like Lily Colins a lot, and her leading man didn't cope up with my expectations for her (Unlike with her other movies that I can point out). I couldn't for the love of God, be a fan of Lily and JCB.

But I ended up liking the story still, and I wanted to know what was gonna happen next, so right after the movie, I went straight right ahead at the local bookstore and bought the first 3 books. After reading book one, I can now clearly see why JCB and Lily didn't click at all. Jamie Campbell Bower, I repeat, JCB is no Jace at all. After reading the book I was really drawn to Jace's character, where as in the movie, I didn't. I ended up imagining Zac Efron for Jace, and erased JCB from my mind... Completely.
Lily and JCB didn't click cause the movie lacked one of the main aspects why you are hooked with the book, and that is Jace. JCB failed to portray Jace. He is no Jace Wayland at all. I'm sorry if I will end up offending his fans, but that's just how I see it, and yes I believe this could be one of the factors why the movie flopped.

message 344: by Hope (new) - rated it 5 stars

Hope S I adored Jamie as Jace, and I think he did a damn sight better job that Dom is doing in the TV show at the moment (which is horrendous in my opinion, hahah)

Mackenzie I personally did not like any of the cast for their roles. I did not like Jace because he didn't really play the part. Three of the many many many many many many reasons why I did not like him

1)Not cocky enough. He was too focused on Clary and was too serious. I mean, where is the Jace we know that was a total jerk in love with him self. (anyone thinking of that conversation with Clary in COB)

2)Anorexic. Most people were probably thinking of how nice he looked, but man, I was like "im concerned for your health" I swear, you could have put him in skinny jeans and they would be loose!

3)Accent. Okay, this one may be kind of stupid, but I did not see anywhere in the books that shadowhunters had British accents, so why does every shadowhunters in this movie have a British accent?!?!?!?!? Like really, only Robert Sheehan (Simon) bother to hide his accent, so why couldn't the rest!?

So, those are some of the reasons I did not like the castings, the Shadowhunters (TV show based off the series) casting is MUCH better.

Remember, when I comment, this is my personal opinion, im not saying yours is wrong, so don't go screaming at me when you don't like what I say because I never said anything about your opinion.

I totally agree! >_< Jace is one of the very important aspect of TMI and even for those who haven't read the books before watching the movie like me, JCB totally failed to capture majority of the hearts of the audience.

Oh well.... Too late to complain now, there's never gonna be a movie sequel. Might as well try the TV series.

Deniz This is so funny. All these girls acting like they are the next Miss Universe or some shit and saying that Jamie Campbell Bower isn't hot enough for them. You may have not liked Jamie as Jace for other reasons but hotness isn't a valid one really. For example in the books Magnus finds Alec hotter than Jace. Not everyone likes the same type. Jamie is in the eyes of many people hot. For another example I don't find Alex Pettyfer as hot as Jamie because that's my preference.

I have read the Infernal Devices, and I know that some of the Herondales are Brit's, but, Jace spent at least 7 years of his life in New York, so why would he have an accent? Same with Izzy and Alec and all the other Shadowhunters.
