Barb Oh noes! We've slipped back to sixth place -- but the fifth place team is only ahead of us by TWO BOOKS! And the fourth place team is only two books ahead of them ...

message 1454: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments WE GOT THIS :D

message 1455: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Field (nicolefield) | 1778 comments And I have finished another book, with an additional one ready to be finished by the end of today (I hope!) Anything everyone else gets in today is gravy that might push us to fourth place!

message 1456: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Field (nicolefield) | 1778 comments I'm reading through the October reading challenge right now.... and guys, do we want to try to do both challenges? I mean, yeah, there's the one for the mini-challenge in October, but we've done so well "reading-as-much-as-we-can" over the last two months!

Besides, those BAPs are making my eyes turn into tiny cartoon dollar signs, only with books. ;)

message 1457: by Barb (new)

Barb Oh I never doubted that we would do both challenges :) We have to TRY at least, and there's no penalty for not finishing! But really ... the "book hunt" is only 15 books in two weeks' time. Granted, they'll be from specific cateogories, but we can knock out 15 books in two weeks, right?

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6400 comments Yeah, I'm in ...

message 1459: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Field (nicolefield) | 1778 comments I just need to look over the books I'm reading for next month. So far, I have one from Neil Gaiman, which I think fulfils one of the challenges, and also Discovery of Witches. It's fairly likely I won't finish Summer Knight until next month.

Duration, Time Zones and Timer Count Down UPDATED

message 1461: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments I'll be posting threads for each of the two events as well as a discussion thread in the next little bit.

Each thread will have a brief overview of that event.

I'll be asking everyone to comment in the discussion thread with their planned reading and/or what they want to read for the event #2.

The KEY will be those who choose to participate READING THE BOOKS THEY COMMIT TO, AS FAST AS THEY CAN, and not changing books (which is a tendency amongst, well, all tower teams readers, but also our team -- see the Chain Game for examples hahaha).

I'll post here again when I add the threads so everyone knows to look :)

Monsieur Mango Tango (mangotangoNBRC) | 11 comments Okay, fellow Mango Tango peeps!

It's that time again! TIME TO START PREPPING for next month's challenge! We're doing well on this months, so keep it up, but stop by the following threads to familiarize yourself with the challenge:

Official Rules Thread: Official Rules

Mango Tango Event #1 Thread: Event #1 Mango Tango

Mango Tango Event #2 Thread: Event #2 Mango Tango

After reading through all the rules and the two threads where I've posted the rules as simply as possible, please post any questions you have regarding those rules in their respective threads.

Then, jump over to the Discussion Thread for this challenge, found here: Discussion Thread for Oct Challenge, Mango Tango and read the brief instructions for our preparation.

In that Discussion Thread, please post which, if any, of the two events you're participating in (either, both, or none) AND please post a list of books that fit the categories that you are willing to COMMIT to read, AS FAST AS POSSIBLE, during the dates of the Read-a-thon and Treasure Hunt.

A lot of BAP points are on the line. Let's rock this Halloween Spookfest and SCARE the other teams with our reading AWESOMENESS. :)

message 1465: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments I can't wait! :D

message 1466: by Jane (new)

Jane | 705 comments Not long to go at all. According to start time I start at 5pm on the 4th, unfortunately I am going out and know I won't be home to very late. But I will get started on the 5th.

message 1467: by Barb (new)

Barb I won't be able to start reading till I get home from work on the 4th, but I don't think hubby will be home that weekend, so I'll have a LOT of time to read ... I hope :)

message 1468: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Field (nicolefield) | 1778 comments Oh wow, this might be the perfect month to pull out all those long books I've been hoarding as the challenge this month is based on word count!

message 1469: by Barb (new)

Barb As long as you can finish them before the RaT ends at 8am PST on October 19 :) We're so used to these things running for an entire month, it's going to be hard to remember that this one is only two weeks long!

message 1470: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Field (nicolefield) | 1778 comments That's a good point, Barb. Could we maybe have a mod put the start and end dates on the two Mango Tango challenge threads to stop us from potentially forgetting that mid-month?

message 1471: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments Page count, Nicole, not word count! ;)

I'll add the dates as big as I can. I'll copy the links that the mods posted a few posts above this one with the dates and times.

message 1472: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Field (nicolefield) | 1778 comments Ha sorry, I meant page count ;) And thanks for when you get to updating the dates!

message 1473: by Barb (new)

Barb And we can all do our best to remind each other, too, that the deadline is approaching :)

Barb Steven wrote: "I'll add the dates as big as I can. I'll copy the links that the mods posted a few posts above this one with the dates and times."

Unfortunately, you can't alter the size of a font in a GR post. If you'd like, though, I can make a large, attention-getting graphic/image that you can post. LMK

message 1475: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments Haha I wrote BIG and meant to write SOON. Hahaha I'm telling you this job saps my brain!

I definitely plan on reminding people, and with having to page updates on a every two day or so basis, I'll need everyone to post their page count updates as close to every day anyways, so we definitely won't forget.

That's why it's such a big deal that we get those tasks done ASAP... We have to finish them as close to first as we can, sure, but we also only have two weeks to get them all done.

Barb, are you sure that's not too much pressure? (As I look at your 23 books already this month, I'd say 5 in two weeks is no biggie, but thought I'd make sure) lol

message 1476: by Barb (new)

Barb LOL Steven As long as I don't burn out on reading during the RaT in my other group earlier in the month, I'll be ok with these :)

message 1477: by Barb (new)

Barb Everyone who's planning to participate in this October challenge: Would you please post in this thread and tell us what time zone you're in? Then we can give each of you an individual start/end time :)

message 1478: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments Thanks Barb... I hate time zone work and appreciate the help so much'

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6400 comments Barb, Nicole and I are in the same time zone in Australia, although different cities. We are 17 hours ahead of goodreads time, so when it is midnight there, it is 5 pm the next day here. Make sense... oh, except it will change by an hour when daylight saving kicks in here and I better check when that is.

message 1480: by Lisa - (Aussie Girl) (last edited Sep 23, 2013 08:28PM) (new)

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6400 comments Yep, it starts on October 6. So add an hour.... midnight goodreads time is 6pm the next day here. So 18 hours ahead.

message 1481: by Barb (new)

Barb And GR time is Pacific Time, right? LOL

Steven and I are both in the same time zone as well (I think?) I'm in EST, which will change to EDT this weekend. Oh how I hate this daylight saving time garbage! LOL

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6400 comments Uh oh! If US time changes too I'm not sure if that adds or removes another hour. oh Dear... Just an approximate time will be good enough, Barb. We'll have an extra 17-19 hours but it also means we have to start a day later by our time. Have I thoroughly confused you now, LOL.

message 1483: by Barb (last edited Sep 23, 2013 09:21PM) (new)

Barb Not yet, Lisa LOL And Daylight Saving Time doesn't start until the first weekend in October, not this weekend. Can you tell it's late and I'm tired? LOL

It's just about 12:30am here on Tuesday, September 24, right now. What time/day is it where you are, Lisa?

message 1484: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Field (nicolefield) | 1778 comments Ha, thanks Lisa, you saved me the trouble of looking into it ;)

Daylight Saving Time does not start in the US until November, according to all of the sites I have checked.

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6400 comments Barb, It's 3.05 pm on Tuesday here.

Read-a-Thon Duration: October 4th BST 4:00 PM to October 19th BST 4:00 PM

We decided to use the Greenwich hour for two reasons:
1.Is the "zero" hour. All time zones relate to it
2.Daylight saving time change will only occur on October 27th, so it won't interfere with read-a-thon timings.

message 1489: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments Yes, the US changed DST a few years ago, adding time at the beginning and the end, so ours won't end until Nov 3. Last year it was on Nov 4, and my partner went around telling everyone that they were welcome for his birthday gift of an extra hour. Hahaha

You're right, of course. I took someone else's comment at face value, instead of checking it out myself. My apologies!

message 1492: by Barb (new)

Barb OK team, I'll tackle puzzle 151 that was posted this morning if one of you wants to take on #152 (spot the difference) and especially #153 (book covers AGAIN!) ... please??? :)

message 1494: by Barb (new)

Barb I have enough issues with my eyes without seeing that big blur of yellow and red :) Since many on our team, including our illustrious captain, are considerably younger than I am, I'll leave those eye-straining puzzles to them :)

message 1495: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments Turned in 153.

I can only find 8 on 152 *sigh*

message 1496: by Barb (new)

Barb I've done the jigsaw part of #151, but I have to switch internet browsers before attempting the slider part. Google Chrome doesn't like to leave a blank space in the sliders :(

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6400 comments Sent in puzzles #150 and #152.

I just wanted to make sure you didn't change your clocks, only to find out you shouldn't have.

message 1499: by Barb (new)

Barb Thanks for looking out for me, Karla :)

And I took care of both parts of puzzle #151 for the team, so nobody else has to deal with that slider LOL

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6400 comments Thanks Barb, you know my opinions on sliders! LOL. Now give me a nice differences, change a letter or wheel puzzle anyday.
