For members with Challenge Goals 50 books or less, I'll set the minimal as 300 pages.

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 705 comments Ok Mauvelous mavens......how many want to do the readathon???
I need to look at my TBR to determine my goal. Since I'm trying to knock off some long books, I might try for 1000 pages.

message 53: by jingles (new)

jingles I need to take a look at it again, to see if I can do it.

I tried a mini challenge in round one, and did not do so well.

I'll have another look see tomorrow and decide then.

:)

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 705 comments Anyone have any good "mini-challenge" ideas to submit. Each team can submit one challenge. It should be book related, but not necessarily to read specific books. Examples, take a photo of what you use as book marks....take a photo a book cover that XXXX.

A couple of ideas:
Take a photo of 4 books covers that represent each of the seasons.
Take a photo of book titles which form a sentence of at least 4 words and 3 books.

Barbara ★ I only want to do the read-a-thon if everyone else does. It's a lot of work for all involved and I have NO interest in the mini-challenges.

For RaTs I want to read what I need to read as each month I already have set books for the whole month. I don't want to force in something else as each month I'm already committed to more than I can possibly read anyway.

This RaT seems restrictive
◈ Each team should choose a theme for the read-a-thon and read at least one book representing that theme.
*1 point per book read
*30 points if 50% of team members read a book representing the theme
*50 points if all the team members read a book representing the theme

◈ Each of them should read a book with a cover representing the color of the team.
*1 point per book read
*30 points if 50% of team members read a book with the team color
*50 points if all the team members read a book with the team color

◈ An extra 5 points if all the team members participate in the read-a-thon.

And the whole point seems to be that ◈ The winner will get a 4 book advantage on the team's total

So I would think that everyone has to be involved and everyone has to commit to all the little challenges and everyone has to do the mini challenges. Like I said it's a whole lot of work and time involved.

I only want to participate if EVERYONE is going to participate because otherwise what's the point?

READ-A-THON UPDATES

There are some misunderstanding about ALL the team members needed to participate to get points.

Well, they DON'T

If a team has 12 members and only 4 want to participate, that team can still earn all the points available.

We'll consider that team a team of FOUR elements to the Read-a-Thon only.

message 58: by JoLene (new)

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 705 comments Greetings and salutations from Stockholm......
I need to get a roll call of folks participating in the Readathon by Wednesday noon Pacific time, as I will be leaving for Copenhagen on Thursday and we won't have wireless at the hotel.

From the message above, I think that "the whole team" points only applies to those folks that are participating in the Readathon, so Barbara if you don't want to participate, it will not penalize us.

I know what you mean about planned reading....I also have a pretty solid list going into the month. We could probably find a theme that would fit something on most of our lists.....like a "young adult", or romance. For me the harder one is the color mauve which I think pink would be accepted, but I don't read many books with pink covers :-)

message 59: by Barbara ★ (new)

Barbara ★ It's not that I don't want to participate in the read-a-thon itself. I'm going to be reading anyway and posting here is no harder than posting elsewhere.

I was just saying that the point of the RaT is to get the most points so you get the 4 extra books for our team. But if everyone doesn't participate, then we can't win so why go through all the bother. But that seems to have been a misunderstanding as the instructions are unclear on this point.

So if we're going to do it, I'm in.

In 12 days time I typically read over 4000 pages but to be on the safe side, I will go with 3500.

I have 5 romances and 7 YA on my May reading list so I could do either theme.

It looks like I might have two books that qualify as mauve for May if I can get them from the library. What do you think, is this mauve? The Lion's Daughter (Scoundrels, #1) by Loretta Chase Deadly Fear (Deadly, #1) by Cynthia Eden

message 60: by Sonia (new)

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments Hi all.

I see there is some confusion about the whole RaT process, can I help?

The RaT has a max of 160 points per team.

If not all the team members want to participate, your team can still earn 155 points.

In order to gain that 155 points, every PARTICIPATING member of the team has to read 2 books, one matching the color and other matching the theme, that allow to achieve the goal set, and the team has to suggest a mini-challenge (before the start of the read-a-thon).

Is not supposed to be easy.

I'm sorry that things get so confused. It all made sense in my mind when I was creating it. But my brain sometimes work in mysterious ways *giggles*

I'll try to be less complicated to the next one.

Any more question feel free to ask.

You can always post it to the RaT or send a PM, just in case I let it pass unnoticed.

message 64: by jingles (new)

jingles Okay, sign me up for 1,000 pages. Surely I can get that many done in 12 days. I think my biggest problem will be finding books with mauve covers.

I don't think all of your books has to match the theme...I think only 2 out of all of them have to in the mauve cover and second one to match the theme. Mods correct me if I am wrong..:)

message 66: by Barbara ★ (new)

Barbara ★ Because we don't get any extra points for exceeding our goal, I'll push myself to 4000.

message 67: by Barbara ★ (last edited Apr 22, 2013 10:16AM) (new)

Barbara ★ It doesn't seem as if we've heard for Carrie, Valerie or Evil Twin One on the RaT.
Hina or JoLene do you want to contact them?

message 68: by Barbara ★ (last edited Apr 22, 2013 10:24AM) (new)

Barbara ★ And we need to come up with a mini challenge too. Any ideas? We get 5 points just for suggesting it. It seems like the Mods will introduce mini-challenges during the RaT and might choose from the suggestions.

How about "take a picture of the books you plan to read for the RaT"?

message 69: by JoLene (new)

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 705 comments I read a lot on the kindle so not sure how to take a pic......
I had suggested a couple things above....
though of another one....take a picture of books that represent a trip involving multiple continents.

You guys are amazing in terms of reading speed. I wish that I could read that fast!!

I always thought that mauve was more pink-ish than purple.....I found a pink book, but will now start trying to find a more "purple" one.

Hina, I will send the others a quick message.

message 77: by Valerie (new)

Valerie OK, I'm in for 1000 pages. I'm not big on romance, but I do have some romantic suspense books in my TBR pile, would those count? I also have some YA.

message 78: by JoLene (new)

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 705 comments I prefer YA to romance :-). I'm part of a Forever Young Adult bookclub, which a nation-wide bookclub with local chapters. A friend started a local one and since I read a lot, she asked me to join. Of course, I read a lot compared to my friends --- not compared to you guys :-)

message 79: by JoLene (last edited Apr 23, 2013 02:24AM) (new)

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 705 comments Would any of these work??? I originall thought mauve was closer to pink (a dusty pink with a hint of purple or gray). I am doing another challenge where I need to "pre-define a reading list" for May so I'm trying to get this nailed down.

Vows, Vendettas and a Little Black Dress (A Sophie Katz Murder Mystery #5) by Kyra Davis or Vanity, Vengeance And A Weekend In Vegas (A Sophie Katz Murder Mystery #6) by Kyra Davis or Her Royal Spyness (Her Royal Spyness Mysteries, #1) by Rhys Bowen or Merlin Library Edition by Stephen R. Lawhead or The Weed That Strings the Hangman's Bag (Flavia de Luce, #2) by Alan Bradley

message 80: by Barbara ★ (new)

message 81: by Carrie (last edited Apr 23, 2013 06:32AM) (new)

Carrie (icanhasbooks) | 105 comments Jolene, mauve is more of a dusty pink like you said, like the top I showed.

I don't think any of them would work really, sorry. Those purple covers would fall in the lilac family and the first would be in the magenta one.

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 705 comments Ok, I think I'm going with The Duke and I (Bridgertons, #1) by Julia Quinn as my selection for mauve. This is more of the color that I think of when I think of mauve. Funnily enough, this is the color that we painted our dorm room in college, but it was called "country clover" :-)

Also, we have a new teammate......welcome Thilde!

Proposals:
A. Young Adult: WINNER!!!!!
B. Romance
C. Has a non-human character
D. Set in a foreign country

Votes: JoLene, Barbara, can do any
Hina: C or D
Valerie:A or D

message 90: by Hina (new)

Hina (hinaj) | 884 comments I like C & D, I have a book set in Portugal that is on my May list. I can also find non-human pretty easily as well. and I think taking a picture of all the books you are planning to read for readathon be the easiest to do since we can make a collage of it online and not necessarily have to take a picture. Do we need to take picture picture for sure like with a camera?

We need to ask regarding the picture vs collage. The examples were take a photo so I was just going with that :-)

Seems like it would work based on the purple-y definition of mauve :-)

You are correct that we only need to suggest the mini challenge, but I would say that at some point we will be requested to do the challenges as well :-). I have asked a question regarding if we can just use GR links vs taking and then uploading photos.
Also, someone indicated that you earn points for every book with your team color and I have pointed out that it is a bit unfair because some covers are easier to find than others :-).

I'll keep you guys posted.

Welcome Thilde!!! Please let me know where you will be shelving books for this challenge so I can add it to our spreadsheet. All of the important links are in the beginning of this thread.

We can't count the book you are currently reading for the read-a-thon since that one has a set start time of May 1st.

message 97: by jingles (new)

jingles I just looked, and I don't have anything scheduled for May that has a mauve cover. I don't even think I have one in my entire TBR, though, I do need to check that again.

If all else fails, I will either use the one posted by JoLene or Barbara. Those two books are in a favorite genre of mine, so it's all good.
