jingles Hi Gang!

Hina, looks like you've been reading some good stuff (as always). I keep adding things to my TBR from your updates. Lol. Also, I stated the I-Team series by Pamela Clare, which is absolutely pure awesomeness! Thank you for the recs.

Jolene, I'm kind of in a slump too, though I don't have the extra activity going on at my house, so I really have no excuse. I'm just kinda hit and miss with my reading. Although, since I've started this new series, I a little bit back on track. Um...if you would like, I can pass a couple of my challenges to you. Or, better yet, I could point you in the direction of all those wonderful challenges you are missing out on. Just say the word. Lol.

Barbara, what have you been up to? I'm sorry you had to work the Friday after Thanksgiving. I was in the office for a couple of hours myself, but nothing major. Hope you are doing well.

Hina (hinaj) | 884 comments @JoLene, Sorry to hear about your reading slump. But it seems like the holidays, remodeling and your jobs are keeping you busy so you might not have time for reading. I am in too many challenges as usual. :) RRRC is doing a reading tournament with books rated 5 stars by your friends or GR members...its a pretty neat challenge, so far I have only one book I have read that I gave a 3 stars. There is also a cookie quarterly challenge starting soon there and I am hosting a Christmas challenge, if you are looking to join something....the last two are short challenges if you don't want to commit to much.

Hina (hinaj) | 884 comments Hi Jingles!

I think I am only reading some good stuff because of the RRRC tournament which I have to choose books that already received 5 stars by 2 other people so most likely I am reading some very good books.

Isn't I-Team series great?!!! Its only going to get better.

No time for a reading slump, I have told myself to finish off as many series as I can, so I can get a control of them, so now I have 50 something book in December, which I know I won't finish but I am trying to put a big dent in it. Now I am just wondering why did I start so many series, I just can't seem to help myself.

message 804: by jingles (new)

jingles Wow, that is a lot of series, Hina, but the way you read, you will be caught up in no time.

I can never stay on top of my series, though I've gotten better since I found FictFact. I love that site. Although, once you start following a series, of course it has recommendations for you. Lol.

I absolutely loved Extreme Exposure - a 5 star read for me. I'm getting ready to start Hard Evidence today.

I saw that RRRC tournament challenge, but didn't join because I really don't have that many GR friends, so didn't think I could get very far with it. Sounds like it's lots of fun though.

message 805: by Hina (new)

Hina (hinaj) | 884 comments Like 2 years ago, I went through all my books read and see how many series I hadn't finished and I had like 200 series that I didn't finish and some I didn't even remember the books and the story so I have been trying to be good about finishing up in a reasonable time, and re-reading some of the older ones when I have the chance. LOL...I use my priority/lined up shelf to keep track...I tried fictfact but I was very bad about keeping up with it.

For the tournament, you can use other GR members who have read the book and rated it 5 star, so you have more options, you just can't use the same person after 5 times. So you should have enough to keep reading until the end of the challenge. You should try it.

message 806: by JoLene (new)

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 705 comments Great challenge to read stuff that others like :-D I do that as a task often in the challenges that I create.

I do have a couple of my own challenges to finish. I do my own pyramid style challenge and I have one category that I am short a couple of books.

I did start the new Bridget Jones book, and one by Susanna Kearsley who is one of my new favs.

I do have a couple of series that I need to finish. I don't have the greatest memory so I prefer to read trilogies once all the books are published. I don't read that many long series.

message 807: by Barbara ★ (new)

Barbara ★ Hi ladies.

@JoLene, I've been in a bit of a slump as well. I read some at work (when I'm not busy) so at night I've been working on cataloging and uploading my massive amount of ebooks. I find I just don't want to read at home..not sure why. Definite slump.

@Hina, I saw the RRRC challenge and since I already had my December books selected decided not to participate. But I have plenty of other challenges on tap which I've been having difficulty completing since I'm only reading about half what I was reading. usually around 34/35 per month, November was 17 and so far in December only 6.

And I have tons and tons of series started that I haven't gotten back to though I did finish a good number this year and plan on concentrating on series books next year so hopefully I'll whittle a few down though I'll probably add a few too.

@Jingles, my job is a disaster. As a matter of fact, the company is going out of business and I will soon be unemployed. Heck I might enjoy it as I haven't had a vacation (or even a day off) in 8 years!!! A few months might be nice. Think of all the books I could read. lol

I've read a few of the I-Team books and loved them. They have some sweet heroes!!!

Barbara, so sorry to hear about your job, but I am glad you found an upside to it. I just hate the process of looking for job, and sending out tons of resumes...it stresses me out, I rather be reading.

message 809: by jingles (new)

jingles Oh, Barbara, I'm sorry to hear about your job. And no vacation in 8 years - that's awful! I do hope you get to take a little time off though before having to jump back in the work force.

message 810: by Lisa Kay (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Really, Barbara★! Time for a vacation, but not necessarily this way.

message 811: by Barbara ★ (new)

Barbara ★ Thanks ladies. It's going to be a really rough Christmas especially since on top of everything else the company is 2 weeks behind in the payroll too (3 if we don't get paid tomorrow).

It's just not something you expect from a family business. Oh well, live and learn.

message 812: by Hina (last edited Dec 13, 2013 07:44AM) (new)

Hina (hinaj) | 884 comments so sorry to hear that Barbara, hopefully you will have an easier transition to another job soon.

Checked the tracker this morning, we are up to 982 books.

message 813: by jingles (new)

jingles It's bad enough for that to happen, Barbara, but for it to be at Christmas time, I just think that is the absolute worst time for them to not make the payroll.

Hopefully, a wonderful new job will come along for you soon.

message 814: by Barbara ★ (new)

Barbara ★ The warehouse that is taking over our customers has tentatively offered me a job. I have an interview on Monday so we'll see how that turns out. Hopefully it'll work out satisfactorily for me and ensure a smooth transition for all.

message 815: by Lisa Kay (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Oh! Look out; you'll have no time off.

message 816: by Barbara ★ (new)

Barbara ★ I woke up this morning thinking the same thing LK. Yup probably not gonna get a single freakin' day off but this is a big company so maybe some cross training will happen and a vacation might even be possible.

message 817: by JoLene (new)

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 705 comments Good luck Barbara, but you definitely need to negotiate some time off :-)

In 2011, my husband got laid off unexpectedly from a job he didn't like. At the time, I was recovering from breast cancer treatments and wasn't working either. It turned out for the best because I couldn't take care of myself (drive or even do any lifting). I went back part-time early, but he ended up finding a job that he liked a lot better. So I know it's super hard especially around the holidays, but I hope that next year you can look back from a better place.

message 818: by Lisa Kay (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Silver linings...

message 819: by Barbara ★ (new)

Barbara ★ Well the interview really didn't go well at all. They aren't willing to pay me what I'm currently making though they can't tell me what they want to pay. I guess something is better than nothing but once you start low you never get back to where you were. I found this out the hard way.

Oh well, I'll have to wait and see what they offer...if anything. *fingers crossed*

message 820: by JoLene (new)

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 705 comments Sending positive vibes your way!!!!

message 821: by Barbara ★ (new)

Barbara ★ Thanks.

You are definitely right about going back down to the lower salary from where you were. Hopefully they will realize having a good employee is worth it. fingers crossed**. Keep looking elsewhere too while you are waiting.

message 823: by Barbara ★ (new)

Barbara ★ I'm checking into unemployment to see how much I'll get. Heck it might be more than this new place will offer. It would be nice not to have to get up at the crack of dawn and scrap ice/snow off my car for a few months. :)

message 824: by JoLene (new)

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 705 comments Sounds like you deserve a bit of a vacation and break. If you can afford it, maybe it would be better and then you have time to actually look for a job.

message 825: by Hina (new)

Hina (hinaj) | 884 comments Definitely take a break and enjoy it. From what you told us, you have been working non-stop, its definitely due.

message 826: by jingles (new)

jingles Yeah, I think it would be wonderful if you could take a break, Barbara. And then just take your time in looking around, to see what is out there, and not have to rush into anything.

message 827: by Barbara ★ (new)

Barbara ★ I'd love to take a break but sadly I can't afford to. I spent the last 5 years digging myself out of debt, I can't afford to go back there.

Unfortunately what I do is not something that is readily available. I've been looking for the better part of 2 years now since I knew this was coming. There is absolutely nothing in Jersey and with this late notice (and winter) moving out of state isn't an option. Though I did look into that too and again, no jobs.

The other company did offer a job this morning at a greatly reduced salary but I can't afford to be unemployed so I took it with the caveat that more money would be on the table as the business grows. If it doesn't work out, then I'll have to consider something else but hopefully I'll have time to investigate my options and make better plans.

message 828: by JoLene (new)

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 705 comments Well -- I'm glad that you don't have to worry in the short term. Hopefully things will get better under different management :-D

message 829: by jingles (new)

jingles I completely understand, Barbara. I live alone, and if it happened to me that way, I wouldn't be able to take the break either. Not right now anyway.

It's good that you will still be employed with no down time. Also, as you say, it gives you the option of continuing to look.

And who knows, maybe they will come through on the money end.

All in all, I'm really glad you will not be totally out of a job. That's a really rough patch to go through.

message 830: by Barbara ★ (new)

Barbara ★ Thanks Ladies. Things are grim but they could always be worse. I'm hoping for the best.

message 831: by JoLene (new)

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 705 comments Just checking in ---- how are you guys doing??

I'm still not reading much, but we have made a lot of progress on the remodel. Unfortunately now we are without a kitchen for about 6 weeks. Also, we are having major internet problems :-(

message 832: by Barbara ★ (new)

Barbara ★ I've given up updating our tower team. I'm just not into it anymore. I'm reading though not like I was. I'm trying to get my groove back but the situation at work is taking it's toll.

message 833: by jingles (new)

jingles I also gave up on the updating. I just list my groove.

Barbara, I hope things get better for you in regards to work. I really hope something else comes along for you.

message 834: by Lisa Kay (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Ugh, JoLene, I remember going through that. I hope you enjoy your new kitchen, when it is all done!

That sucks, Barbara★.

message 835: by Hina (new)

Hina (hinaj) | 884 comments Hi guys!

I am still updating, but I am still behind on updating my challenges etc while I was on vacation.

Barbara, I hope things get better at work.

JoLene, I don't think I can survive 6 weeks of remodeling. Good luck, and hopefully the renovation will be awesome so it would be worth it.

message 836: by Barbara ★ (new)

Barbara ★ JoLene, my brother and his wife are remodeling their entire house - totally taking out the kitchen and porch and adding a second floor. They will be out of their house for 6-8 MONTHS. So count your blessings and remember it could be worse. :)

message 837: by Barbara ★ (new)

Barbara ★ Well I found out on Friday that I got the job with the new warehouse but I'm not sure it's a good thing as I don't really like the owners. If I had done a normal interview with this company, I would have passed. They are very abrupt, hasty and belittling so I'm not sure how long this relationship is going to last. But hopefully it'll be long enough to find something else.

message 838: by jingles (new)

jingles Barbara, I am glad you have the job, so that you at least have that income coming in while you look. I know it will be very difficult, as the relationship has not started out on good footing. Hopefully you will be able to find something else very quickly.

Are there any contacts you have through the current job that might be able to help? You would have to be very careful of course, and be able to trust who you speak too. It's just a thought.

message 839: by Barbara ★ (new)

Barbara ★ Thanks Jingles. I'll certainly be looking into any and all options. This just came so suddenly that I didn't have anything set up. The company is a big one so there are possibilities but it surely doesn't look good right now. I'll bide my time and hope things changes quickly.

message 840: by jingles (new)

jingles Yes, I remember it happened out of the blue during the holidays. For it to have happened so quickly and unexpectedly like that was just awful. Then adding to the fact it was the holiday season, they were having trouble making payroll--it was bad all the way around.

Better things await you my friend, I truly believe that.

message 841: by Barbara ★ (new)

Barbara ★ I hope so Jingles. I certainly hope so.
