Want it so much!"
Thats brilliant

That Star Wars toaster isn't as awesome as it looks. As with most novelty toasters it makes the bread look cool but toasts it so unevenly it tastes weird. The book ends are a most have though, if only I had the money.

Those novelty toasters look like they make terrible toast.

Do you ever have too many books? I mean, spare books you don't need/want anymore? What do you do with them? Charity shop? BookCrossing? BookMooch? Ebay? Amazon "sell yours"? Or... *gasp* ...recycling bin?
I need to downsize, but am not sure how.

well i swap with family and friends, donate them to charity shops and buy from charity shops.
i am very lucky that the biggest second hand book shop is based in the town i work in and they do a barter system. i take a bag of books in and they offer me a price for them. i except it and it get written down on my account card for future use.

My Great-Grandfather was in the Bohmenian Club. I'm not sure what their entrance requirements are these days but I think we'd both fit right in :P

Rob, this is the first time in almost 40 years I'm willing to let go of books I've hoarded. But I've been the give-leftover-books-to-person for so many different people over the years that my collection now contains a considerable number of books I've never wanted in the first place, and will most likely never read, ever. Footballer's memoirs, for example. And I lug them around with me every time I move house.
Tried BookMooch.com, but nobody wants my books, despite the site claiming they're on other people's wishlist and they have been emailed to inform them. Not sure if I'm late to the party and the website is dead.
Will try BookCrossing next.
My problem with charity shops and used book stores is that most of my books are in English, but I'm in Germany. They will take a few select bestsellers, but no random English books.
Same with swapping - most people I have real life contact with over here can't read English fluent enough.
The library does not take any donations at all. I found this out after I borrowed Sabriel from their English Language shelf (they have ONE shelf....), and they did not have the sequel Lirael. I found a copy in my own collection and tried to donate it for the shelf, but they told me they only stock books purchased by them through their own catalogues, using their own funds. German bureaucracy, I assume.
Also - Finar's Organic Chemistry Vol. II and similar items need to go as well, and they're not so hot for entertainment reading...

Today I met Veronica + Josh and other S&L people and we went to see Scalzi's talk at the Bay Area Book Faire...He read from an upcoming Old Man's War book and talked about his blog post that spoke about how he knew when he had made it, and what it was like to live in poverty. Great guy, and very funny...He could be a stand up comedian if he gets tired of writing sci-fi.
All-in-all a great weekend! No reading done yet though :P
Congrats on the house. I uh bought a new Hvac vir mine this weekend. Weeee.
Jealous about the s&l Scalzi meetup. I hope I get to meet a bunch of people when I visit this summer.

End of August. So I can be there for the meetup.
Oh and on a plus side, I did just see Chris Hardwick and he was hilarious.

Why can't you play Skyrim?

I'm thinking about it, for sure

My 360 is rotting, and has been for years. If I buy a new console it'll probably be a WiU when they put out the next Zelda game, or if I want to play some Kart or Smash Brothers.

It looks incredible but I can think of a lot of things that I'd rather spend 50k on (it doesn't look like money is an issue for these people). Also his son's name is Indie and that's just stupid.

The leather sofa, though. He spent so much money to make it look medieval and then he plonks a black leather couch in the middle?
How much is 50k $ in real money anyway?

And a TV - though I do remember a TV and a PS3 involved in playing Skyrim.

One of the hotels we stayed at on our honeymoon had a faux rock waterfall shower and a hot tub fed by a waterfall....It was actually a lot of fun. If his wife is into that sort of role playing, its totally worth $50k. If its just his "man cave" then totally not. If you get my drift.

When I lived in New Zealand there was a place not far from my house with a real waterfall where you could swim, that was of course the crème de la crème.
I like the fact Ms Yant put an apple in your parcel, Alex :)

I like geek-centric stuff, tech blogs, long read essays. Any suggestions?
I still mostly read i09. In fact a large part of what I read is Gawker (i09, Gizmodo, Kotaku). I also do Engadget, Tor.com, a bunch of author blogs/websites. When Joystiq went away, I started following Polygon and that's been pretty good. I still do Slashdot, though they always seem way behind my other feeds on all but a few things.
I use an RSS reader (Feedly) rather than visiting any of the sites. I skim through most stuff picking out only a handful of things to read most of the time.
At the same time though, I don't recall being in the dark about something I was interested in, so that mix seems to work for me even if some of it
