Kat | 1178 comments My physical TBR pile has over 100 books in it at present, and I LOVE IT. I can stand in front of the bookcase and choose a new read like it's my own personal bookshop that only stocks things I'm interested in and it's all paid for already.

Ctgt | 629 comments That's a pretty cool idea, Kat.

Kat | 1178 comments Yeah, I stockpile books for bad times :)

I ran out of books to read twice in my life, and on both occasions I had no money to buy more (not even used ones) and either had no access to a library, or only had access to a library in languages I didn't understand.

Ever since then, I buy books whenever I have some spare money, and pile them up for the future, just in case :)

I can envision Kat's underground bunker of books now. ;-)

My wife is like this, except for food.

Kat | 1178 comments *carries the extra large cookie jar into the basement*

Sky | 1291 comments Can we really survive the apocalypse with just cookies and books? *grabs a few hundred boxes of powdered milk*

message 564: by Kat (last edited Jul 11, 2016 09:18AM) (new)

Kat | 1178 comments You're right, we do need milk to go with the cookies.

message 565: by Kat (new)

Kat | 1178 comments When I was reading Uhtred, I had large Danish butter cookies, but I can't have Viking cookies with short stories.

What's a good cookie for short stories? Shortbread?

Thanks for putting a smile on my face :)

Kat | 1178 comments You're welcome.

After reading the first few chapters of Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore, and being the resident Cookie Master, I have decided on the perfect cookies for this read:

This is made from cocoa and eggwhites. Traditionally baked in the form of letters, and I have never, ever, seen them in another shape.

Kat | 1178 comments Ooooooooooooh, Ian Irvine said on facebook he'll send signed book plates to people who cannot get to a book signing. I emailed him, and he just sent me the nicest email back.

Seriously fangirling right now <3

That sucks. I just use cheap earbuds myself. I've gone through a ton of them, but they don't cost much.

message 574: by Bill (new)

Bill | 1596 comments They weren't expensive. I just hate not having headphones since I usually use them everyday. I like Bluetooth headphones because I always manage to snag the wire ones on everything and the stores around me don't have them so will need to order them online.

message 575: by Rob, Mayor of Ghost Town (new)

Rob (robzak) | 6375 comments Mod
Ah OK. I don't want to deal with charging my headphones.

Sounds like I won't have a choice before long though.

message 576: by Bill (new)

Bill | 1596 comments It wasn't a big deal for me. I already have to charge my phone, kindle and ipad most days.

Sucks they are taking away the headphone jack. I have to use it to listen to audiobooks in my car and need a new phone. Going to have to make sure i get a phone with one.

Thankfully I got my phone this year.

message 578: by Lee (new)

Lee (kiwifirst) | 29 comments I lose sunglasses regularly. So I have no idea how I am going to keep tiny ear buds somewhere safe.
I can image people trying string between them, then adding another strong with a clip and, well we are back to what we have, except having to charge them.

message 579: by Bill (new)

Bill | 1596 comments The ones i had have a cable that goes behind the neck and then the ear buds themselves were magnetized so you can attach them so it becomes like a necklace.

message 580: by Kat (new)

Kat | 1178 comments That sounds useful.

message 581: by Sky (new)

Sky | 1291 comments I just got my Motorola Z Force w/ projector, camera, and battery mods yesterday. Now I discover I received the Verizon version and I have AT&T with work :| On the phone with Motorola to see if by some miracle they can give me an unlock code for the sim card. My Moto X 1st, 2nd, 3rd gen's were all unlocked so I wasn't even paying attention to the carrier when I ordered.

When it rains it pours :(

message 586: by Kat (new)

Kat | 1178 comments oh no :(

message 587: by Bill (new)

Bill | 1596 comments Its certainly pouring now. My replacement screen was supposed to be delivered yesterday and the status says it was but it is nowhere to be found. Talked to my mail-woman today and she was off yesterday so she doesn't know what happened to it. Was only $12 so thinking of reordering it rather than wait to find out what happened to the first one.

message 588: by Kat (new)

Kat | 1178 comments aaw man, that sucks.

How long will a new order take to get delivered?

message 589: by Bill (new)

Bill | 1596 comments They were out of stock when I went to reorder. Got the Post Office checking on what happened to the original. They have GPS built into the package scanner so should be able to locate it but that doesn't necessarily mean I will end up with it.

On a positive note I got my new headphones and they are working out great so far.

Bill | 1596 comments I feel like I use the same words in every post. Most of the time I use interesting, I think, definitely and also. Going to try to cut back on those and see what else I use way too often.

message 594: by Kat (new)

Kat | 1178 comments Hello peeps, do you organise your bookshelves? If yes, how?

Alphabetically by author? Alphabetically by genre? By colour? Size? Personal star rating?

My library is an absolute mess, as I just shove things wherever there is some space, and then have to remember in which quadrant I last saw a particular book. I kind of like alphabetically by genre, as they have in bookstores, but on the other hand I also want my pirate books together with my naval fiction, and I know for a fact that I have at least 3 shelves with Bernard Cornwell books, because tales about King Arthur don't belong next to Richard Sharpe.

....help?

message 595: by Rob, Mayor of Ghost Town (new)

Rob (robzak) | 6375 comments Mod
By author and series. But it's not alphabetical. I need to redo my sleepovers at some point too. I'm stacked to deep and have extra shelves in not using yet.

message 596: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay | 546 comments I do it by author and series as well with an end spot for new books that I let build up for a few months or so before I reshelve the lot.

That being said, I only buy a handful of physical books a year these days. I read more than 95% ebooks.

message 597: by Kat (new)

Kat | 1178 comments Ooooooooh, I played with e ebook readers at the large chain bookstore the other day.

You could switch between alphabetically by title, and alphabetically by author. Not entirely sure if my old Kindle does that.

A few weeks ago I started to move German books into the hall, and English books (which is the majority) into the library. But I stopped because it turns out I have some books of the same series in different languages (Bolitho, for example), and separating the languages would mean separating the series, which I felt was uncool.

message 598: by Rob, Mayor of Ghost Town (new)

Rob (robzak) | 6375 comments Mod
Different languages isn't a shelving problem I've faced. I'd probably just make exceptions for those in a series.

message 599: by Kat (new)

Kat | 1178 comments Yeah, I also have some French books that need to go some place.

I've toyed with the idea of shelving by topic. Then everything with ships can go on THAT shelf, whether it's naval history or pirates, and everything about WWII can go an ANOTHER shelf, whether it's Anne Frank's diary or a photo book about Pomerania.

But take my current book as an example (Necropolis: London and Its Dead) - do I shelve it with "London" books along with Peter Grant, or with "Funeral" books along with Famous Epitaphs?

I also have Bookpedia on my computer, and about 2/3 of my books have been scanned into it. So maybe I can work out a shelving order from that, and then re-do the whole library.

I go one step further and keep all my ebooks in a Calibre database. I only keep the books I haven't read yet on my reader.
