QUESTION: If I read a lengthy book does the challenge look at it as ONE book (BOOK) or more then that (percentage)
3 books behind shedule currently, If I read a big book (ex: The Final Empire - brandon Sanderson) does that count only as ONE even though its huge>???
basically in a nutshell my question is: Does size matter in the goodreads reading challenge of 2014?
Sharlene, Goodreads counts each book as one book, regardless of length. If you're looking to catch up, I would recommend reading a couple of shorter books instead of one longer one.
I joined the 2014 reading challenge and chose 100 books as my goal. I feel overwhelmed and would like to officially lower my challenge number to 80. Is it possible to do this? I already have read 60 new books this year. However, I love to reread old favorites and would like to continue to do this (I think I've reread at least 15 books this year).
Lynn, it's no problem at all! To do so, click on your challenge, click "edit" on the upper right corner of the challenge box, change the number of books you want to read, and click "Update." And you're all set!

Thank you! I love to read but I can be a little OC about meeting goals.
If you notice that information about a book is wrong, is there someway to fix it? I'm currently reading The Postmistress by Sarah Blake and on the book information page it says it only has 11 pages but it has 326 if you count the acknowledgements and author's note. Or it has 318 if you just count the story.
Karen, when you notice mistakes, you can post in our Librarian Help thread, and one of the group's librarians can get to it.However, I took a quick look at this book, and the reason it's coming up like that is because the default edition is, for some reason, the audiobook. It looks like this is the edition you have: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6...
Hi, Kara! I cannot believe that October is beginning in two days. Just wanted to check on the October and 4th quarter challenges. Thanks!
Hello, thanks for putting the challenges up! :)Just wondering, were we going to have the short books challenge that was mentioned in the challenge ideas thread?
Yes! I always message the challenge creators to make sure they're cool with us using it and ask if they would like to lead it. I just heard back from Ian, so I'll be posting the challenge today. :)
Hi Bernadette,That's strange. I would first try uninstalling then reinstalling the app. If that doesn't work, I'd contact goodreads support: support(at)goodreads(dot)com.
Bernadette/Brianna: ...I just tried the goodreads app on my new android phone and had exactly the same issue, so I'm going to assume it's something they'll fix soonish!
Hi Can you explain the different uses for the "Personal Challenge" page, the "Members Corner" page and the individual challenge pages. Should I record the books I read on all the pages or can I record my read books in my "Members Corner", state when I am finished a challenge on the indivdual pages and just forget about the "Personal Challenge" pages. Doing all three seems like overkill
Hi Lois,Different members do it differently, but let me explain how I use my personal challenge and member corner threads.
In my personal challenge page, I post all of my reviews and also use the first post of the thread to keep track of my planned reading for the month, and which books count for which challenges.
In my member corner I keep track of the challenges I've signed up for and my progress on them.
Finally, in the individual challenge pages, I copy and paste the information from my member corner so that the challenge leader can update me.
All that said, it is TOTALLY up to you how you use your pages, and if you would rather keep track of all of your information in one place, that's fine! If you do choose only one, I do recommend that you use a personal challenge page instead of a member corner. I don't usually look at people's member corners (that's their space) but I like to peek at other's personal challenge pages and help encourage them. :)
I hope that helps clear things up, and if you have any other questions, please feel free to ask!
Thank you for your explanation, Cassandra. I have a member's Corners set up "Chronicles of Lois". Is it possible to move mu folder to the Personal Challenge page? If it is too much trouble, I will just use it in the Members section and remember your advice for next year. Thanks Lois
I'm going to start reading the graphic novel series for The Dark Tower series. Do graphic novels count?
Lois, I'm so sorry that I didn't see your post sooner! It's no trouble at all to move things around, so your thread is now located in the 2015 personal challenges folder.
Hi! My question is about folders, with everyone having different e-readers/tablets to read and follow the group, do you have to have a PC to set it up?
I've tried to setting up folders with my Apple iPads / kindles/ nook but I had to have a mod (moderator) set it up for me and I couldn't get into it afterwards. Many people were having trouble at the new year and also
indicating how to find your folder after completion .
So, I can put my new mini 3 in desktop mode, however, how do I set up my folders and how do I access them? Thanks, Lisa Alexa

I don't believe folders can be set up from the app; however, you can go to your browser and view the desktop version of goodreads.com and set up folders just as you would on a PC. New threads can be set up by clicking the plus sign within the folder from the app.
You can find a folder within a group by going to More then Groups within the app, clicking on the group, and scrolling through the folders listed. If you're trying to find a thread within a folder, then you need to head to the folder it's in as above and scroll through until you find your thread. The app isn't great for this.
Hope that answers your questions!
Hi. I am new to the group and Goodreads in general so I apologize in advance if these questions have been asked and answered. I have tried to find answers but not sure I am looking in the right place. My questions are as follows:
1. How do I go about updating my challenges to show a book as read? I listed all of my I Spy Challenge books out already so I need to know how to show in the challenge they are finished.
2. In my personal challenge do I just find the thread and post a comment with the book information?
Hi Krista, welcome to the group and Goodreads! No need to apologize.1. People do this differently, but you can either edit your original post in the Challenge thread to show that it's done, or you can add a post to the thread when you finish books. If you do edit your original post, I would recommend adding a post to let the leader know that it was updated.
2. Yes, that's usually easiest. A tip: I add my personal challenge thread as a favorite in my internet browser so that I can get to it at anytime without having to find it.
Hope that answers your questions!
how do we count a book if it has multiple books in it by different authors. Is it considered 1book or 1 book per author?
Kylie, I think that's up to you. I typically count them separately, but that's just me. Here's an example (with the same author):This year, I read The Invisible Man and the Time Machine, both by H.G. Wells. My copy is actually this one - The Time Machine/The Invisible Man - which has both stories in one volume. However, for my challenge I put it down as The Invisible Man and The Time Machine, separate books. I did the same for a couple of Sherlock Holmes stories.
The way I look at it is that if the books are sold separately, they ought to count for two books for your challenge, even though sometimes it's nice to buy an edition that has multiple stories bound together.
Thanks for sending a welcome email! Was just clicking through it and noticed the "Group Reads" link wasn't working. Didn't know if this was accidental. Thanks again. I'm very excited to join the fun.
Thanks for letting us know! Today was the big day for moving all of our threads around to get ready for the new year, so that probably has something to do with it. I fixed the link for future welcome messages.I'm glad to hear you're excited to be here and I look forward to getting to know you better! :)
Hello, I am new here, so please be easy on me. :)If I want to participate in a challenge or say the buddy reads, how to I let someone know I want to participate? I am a bit confused on how that works. Say for instance, I would like to join in on Eat, Pray, Love, could I do that? or I am too late for that? I was looking in the yearly challenges for a place to sign up for them as well, but not sure how to do that either. If I missed something, please let me know. TIA,
~Stormie
Hi Stormie! For challenges, simply post in the challenge thread that you'd like to participate, and the challenge leader will add you to the list of participants. Then post in the challenge thread again when you finish books that count toward the challenge so the leader can update your progress. For buddy reads, we have the buddy reads thread where members can nominate and join buddy reads. For the Eat Pray Love buddy read, since it's already started, it's fine to post in there directly and let them know you would like to join them. You're definitely not too late to join!
Sorry if this was asked before or if this is the wrong place to ask... Can we read a book for more than one yearly challenges?
For example, if I read White Teeth by Zadie Smith it works for:
-Let's Turn the pages Challenge
-A-Z Challenge
-Book Riot's Challenge
-#readwomen challenge
-The Debut novel Challenge
Do I need to choose one of them? Or can I use the same book for multiple challenges?
Timothy you absolutely can use one book across different challenges. You just can't use it twice for the same challenge.
This question has probably been answered elsewhere, multiple times: can we count children's books toward our goal and can we count them for challenges?
Sorry to have to ask, but I once was able to locate a bar that tracked my progress for the yearly challenge, but I can't seem to find it now, where would that be located?
If you click on the home tab up at the top of the page, it takes you to your home page and there is a tracker on the right side of your home pages a little ways down.

You absolutely can, Ramsha! You just need to clear or change the date read to something other than this year. To do this, go to the book you want to remove. View your review. Click "edit." You'll see "date I finished this book" on the bottom. Either clear it or change the year.
