Ashley (ashinscribbleland) | 62 comments The main character (I think a boy?) gets sent to a new school for smart/gifted students. Only it turns out they're all just preparing for tests etc. I remember some key points where the couple that ran the school, a shadowy janitor? and one teacher who (possibly) gets fired for trying to rebel and really teach rather than prepare for the test. It was very tongue and cheek and one of those we'll show you the bad outcome of this by pretending to take it seriously? Also, I remember there was lots of chair stacking and unstacking for like school meetings? Thanks!

Cheryl (cherylllr) I've read books that mock and slam the standardized tests, but only as a small bit in a book that's mostly about something else. I hope someone knows this as I'd like to read it.

Hm. How old do you guess the book might be? Did you read it as a paperback or ... ? Do you remember anything about the cover?

Valerie (veegood) | 248 comments This query jogged my memory. I am sure I have read this book, or one very similar. Thinking about it brings to mind my Year 9 classroom, so I think I must have read it about 1986. Was the 'teaching' in the form of mass hypnosis while the children were at assemblies? And did they then spend the next class writing down everything they knew about a subject, only to find themselves writing things they didn't know they knew? All they were doing was regurgitating facts they'd had imprinted on their minds during the hypnosis sessions.

I have been thinking about it all day, but I can't remember the title or author, or any of the character's names. Does it sound like your book? Cos now I want to find it too.

Sent a PM off. She's still active in GR, so hopefully she'll respond.
