20.9 - Moderator's Pet- Peebee’s Task: A New Spring Wardrobe

One of the things I like most about spring is putting away the heavy sweaters and long underwear, and breaking out the short sleeves and lighter-colored clothing. With this task, you can clean out the closets and get ready for spring.

Select one (1) book for this task.

Option A: Cleaning Out the Closets
Select a book that has been on your Goodreads “To Be Read” list for over one year, or if you do not use this feature, select a book that was published in the year 2011 or earlier.

Option B: Cleaning Out the Closets II
Select a book that has a lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender main character, or which is shelved under the genre "GLBT" on the book's main Goodreads page.

Option C: Thrift Shop
When cleaning out the closet, it’s great to take some of the clothes you haven’t worn to the thrift shop, and to pick out some new clothes for the season. And I can’t get the song “Thrift Shop,” by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, out of my head these days. Video*. *adult language
Select a book with a person wearing a fur coat or pajamas on the cover.

Option D: Thrift Shop II
Select a book that came to you used, either from a used bookstore, loaned from a friend, or from the library. Any book that you did not purchase new is fine for this task.
Required: Please identify the source of your book

Option E: Spring Wardrobe
It’s time for that brighter and lighter wardrobe!
Pastel colors are the colors we associate with Easter and spring time. Select a book with a predominately pink cover (at least half the cover).
ex. Something Borrowed (Darcy & Rachel #1) by Emily Giffin The Book of Tomorrow by Cecelia Ahern Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen Tickled Pink A Comic Novel by Rita Rudner

Option F: Spring Wardrobe II
Starting in the spring, you can show more skin when selecting your wardrobe.
Select a book with a person on the cover showing skin. For this task "showing skin" will be: shirtless or wearing a sleeveless top with bare arms; showing bare legs (no visible stockings or other leg covering) with the knees showing; wearing a swimsuit
ex. Her Warrior Slave (MacEgan Brothers, #1) by Michelle Willingham , The Lost Saint (The Dark Divine, #2) by Bree Despain Kushiel's Dart (Phèdre's Trilogy #1) by Jacqueline Carey The Day I Wore My Panties Inside Out by Jen Tucker

Required: Please state the options you selected when you post. If using cover options, please post a link to the book’s cover. If your choices aren’t obvious, please explain the connection.

I was able to meet David Levithan and Ellen Hopkins last year, both of whom have WONDERFUL LGBT characters in their amazing books. Julie Anne Peters is wonderful, too, and, oh, wow, I'm so excited!

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments there are a couple of good anthology type books out there - like The Letter Q: Queer Writers' Notes to their Younger Selves

Chaitra (chaitra_ganesh) | 518 comments Ooh, I like this task! Pity I went through all of Emma Donoghue's bibliography last challenge. Most of her books are shelved GLBT.

Robin (Saturndoo) (robinsaturndoo) OMG I love that song!!!! I have the lyrics stuck in my head now LOL I'm definitely going for Option C or Option D!!! Great Task PeeBee!!!

I wear your grandad's clothes,
I look incredible,
I'm in this big a$$ coat
from that thrift shop down the road.

I'm gonna pop some tags,
only got $20 in my pocket
I'm huntn' lookn' for a come up

I love Ellen Hopkin's books!!! She is one of my all time favorite authors!!!

Robin (Saturndoo) (robinsaturndoo) Oh yeah, for option D does the Goodwill count as a source?

message 17: by Peebee (new)

Peebee | 481 comments Robin, yes, Goodwill counts...any used book works.

I know -- Thrift Shop is such a catchy tune, it's hard to get out of your head. I also saw some people do it at karaoke last night, so it's back!

message 18: by Peebee (last edited Mar 08, 2013 10:43PM) (new)

Peebee | 481 comments One amazing book that I highly recommend for Option B: one of my favorite books of 2012, is John Irving's In One Person. I've been a fan since the unforgettable character of Roberta Muldoon in The World According to Garp and his latest work continues in that fine tradition.

message 19: by kiki (new)

kiki (keekers) | 815 comments for option B, will you accept non-fiction? i was hoping to read The Fry Chronicles. fry is gay, but it's not shelved as GLBT. thanks for your help! :)

message 20: by Peebee (new)

Peebee | 481 comments I will accept non-fiction/biography/memoir where the person under discussion is gay. (And I rather like it that not every book about a LGBT person gets shelved that way.)

However, to make it easier on the moderators, if sexual orientation is not mentioned in the summary of the book, please include a link to something that mentions the person's sexual orientation: Wikipedia entry, interview, gossipy piece with their same-sex partner, something that makes clear that the person personally identifies as LGBT. (Or has been posthumously outed, in the case of people like J. Edgar Hoover.)

kiki (keekers) | 815 comments great, thank you! :)

Karen Roman Does breastfeeding count as "showing skin" for this task?
Saga, Vol. 1 by Brian K. Vaughan

message 32: by Peebee (new)

Peebee | 481 comments Penny wrote: "Is this pink enough? You Don't Have to Say You Love Me by Sarra Manning"

I don't think I would call that predominant or at least half the cover, so I'm going to have to say no.

Penny | 99 comments Ok, thank you.

message 34: by Deedee (last edited May 11, 2013 07:45AM) (new)

Deedee | 2344 comments I'm planning to use
The Santaroga Barrier by Frank Herbert
for Option E. It's dark pink and purplish pink, like alot of the ones in Melanie's post #12 (but then I realized Melanie is not the task creator on this one LOL)

I added The Santaroga Barrier to my goodreads TBR in 2012; however, the physical book has been following me around since the 1970s; so if it isn't pink enough for Option E, maybe it will count for Option A? (oh, and it was published in 1968 so I guess it would count for the "published in the year 2011 or earlier" part of the task)

message 35: by Peebee (new)

Peebee | 481 comments Deedee: this is plenty pink to me, or since it's a one-book task, you can put it under any of the other subtasks you've identified.

message 36: by MiA (new)

MiA (mirhershelf) | 117 comments For option A, I guess it's alright to read a classic that was published in 1900, isn't it??

message 37: by Peebee (new)

Peebee | 481 comments Yes, definitely!
